With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...
Ok, I concede. This is the first logical argument I’ve seen for keeping giant cats off aircraft carriers. I’ve always seen vitriolic nonsense against giant cats, but this shows very clearly the damage they could cause. I’m changing my point of view thanks to this detailed graphic. Thank you for educating me.
When will be your “this is the last fucking time I’m voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’, then I don’t care after that, let this country burn to the ground”? For me, this is basically it. This is last election I’m going for that " lesser of two evils" bullshit. After that I’m done. It’s just pointless. Let’s...
How on earth are people not totally repulsed by Altman? Capitalist to the core. Gross to see all his employees drank the kool aid too. I work in tech, but non-profit side, so I sometimes forget just how driven by money the tech sector is. Altman is a fucking bond villain at this point.
I’m a heavy emoji user, texting is such a poor medium for communication, many times people get the wrong message, but with an emoji you’ll get an idea of the face I’m making, so less chance of misunderstanding...
Haven’t had a turkey sous vide yet, would love to try it. Your method sounds delicious! Thankfully, I’m not in charge of the bird this year. The person who is will be smoking ours, so that will be tasty and different. Happy cooking!
Good on you! We have a defacto meat person too. My sister-in-law’s dad (so I guess married in father-in-law?) likes to take on the meat, though in our case he insists lol.
These sound wonderful! Acid is always welcome for me. I like to squirt some lemon on the veggies that show up on the table. Lots of wine in the gravy helps too.
I’m all for voting in younger representatives but I would never in a million years vote for a 22 year old. Or a racist for that matter. But the most shocking part to me is his age. Like, 22 year olds have not been alive long enough to develop any kind of meaningful wisdom. I’m only 36 so my wisdom is only just developing and I look back on all the 22 year olds I knew when I was 22 and holy shit do not put any of those people in charge of important decisions.
Interesting. My point still stands though. It’s crazy that a party would have a 22 year old on said list, and that anyone would support a party that has a list with 22 year olds on it.
I love cooking, and I cook every day for me and my wife (home office since 2008 helps there), and I love hearing about new things. I have the book “The Science of Cooking” which was fascinating.
Prep ingredients before you cook, and clean as you go. Makes the whole process more focused and more enjoyable. And if you clean as you go, after meal clean up is a breeze.
We are going to reuse a costume from years ago, Scarebears! We just bought some carebear costumes and modified them. We are hosting some friends this weekend who are pretty low key, so we are going to have a little 4 person halloween party Sunday night, so we didn’t want to spend a bunch of money to do something elaborate. Plus, we wanted to be cozy since we’re just chilling at home. My partner is going to be a cannibal bear, and I’m going to be a mummy bear. Easy peasy!
I always cook for myself alone which means I’m used to cooking just one portion, or 2 portions which I end up eating in one sitting anyway. I usually improvise my meals and my brain just seems hardwired to measure quantities for a single portion meal. Does anyone have any tips for scailing your cooking up to cook for groups?
I’m gonna add another vote to look into some cookbooks. One that comes to mind is called Company by Amy Thielan. It’s specifically about cooking for large groups. Most of the recipes are for large groups though (8-12), so you may end up needing to half the recipes, but the best thing about the book is the prose. She writes a lot about strategies and the planning that goes into cooking for a group. Lots of insights into the ingredients to keep on hand, the equipment to use, and recipes that can be made ahead or are best at room temp to make the whole process less stressful. Getting three hot dishes out at the same time is tough on 4 burners. But a meal with a room temp veggie side, and a cold appetizer, means the attention can be given to the main event. I’m sure there are other books addressing all this, but Amy’s just released and I’ve been cooking from it and loving the shit out of it. I highly recommend it. If you’re hesitant to purchase, maybe check a library to see if they have a copy?
Hosting some dear friends this weekend, just finished up the rehearsal/performance process of a staged reading for an incredible piece last weekend. Feeling fortunate and heartfull. Excited about cooking for my friends and watching lots of scary movies! And karaoke will definitely be happening at some point. Hope everyone has a great week!
Say a simple (hours enjoyed playing)/(price of game) equation. How many hours (you enjoyed) per $ do you think is reasonable/expected? Or is there other criteria for you?...
I pay $20 to watch a mediocre rehashed superhero movie for 2 hours. I can absolutely pay $60 or $70 for something that gives me 10 hours of entertainment. And most games I pickup give me way more than 10 hours. So I find gaming to be worth it pretty much all the time.
Completely agree. They demand more than most communities, while enjoying one of the few products that has dodged inflation in a huge way. I remember paying $60 for games in 2000. 20+ years later, and I’m supposed to be livid that most are still $60. The amount of whining is so crazy it’s embarrassing.
So I know Halloween isn’t a day with a huge meal tradition like xmas or tday, but I’m having some dear friends stay with me that weekend and I would love to cook up something Halloweeny. So I’m curious, do any of you have any go-to meals/dishes for Halloween? No real requirements here, it can be outright spooky/gross or...
I do IT for a non profit. Luckily, it’s one that is funded by membership dues so I don’t have to fundraise, which includes a ton of advertising and the like. True, I’m not making bank like a lot of folks in IT. But my peace of mind is intact. I make a good living, and feel good about what I do. Jobs like mine are out there, but when you’re a student all you hear about is the vast amount of money you can make quickly by selling your soul to amazon or whoever. If you keep at it, there is a path in IT that does not include losing sight of your values. Good luck!!
Interesting, I’m on kbin and beehaw and have not had the same issue while browsing either. And I’m on them pretty frequently. I’ll see a few here and there but not like you’re describing. Is it mostly when browsing new? At any rate, just wanted to put it out there that I don’t think defederation is necessary, as it is not a problem for everyone. Though I’m struggling to come up with a solution as your point is valid to not want to see that stuff. Here’s hoping someone smarter than me can come up with something!
Several months ago Beehaw received a report about CSAM (i.e. Child Sexual Abuse Material). As an admin, I had to investigate this in order to verify and take the next steps. This was the first time in my life that I had ever seen images such as these. Not to go into great detail, but the images were of a very young child...
Beehaw is such a special effort. I am so regretful that people have to be subjected to the darkest parts of humanity in order to protect the beehaw project. I don’t need images. If that is the necessary course of action, then so be it.
Most importantly, I am so sorry to you as one human to another. I’m sorry you saw that. I’m sorry humans are hurting each other like that. And I’m sorry that your good faith efforts have been taken advantage of.
Some people truly have nothing going on in their lives. I’d feel bad for them if they weren’t destructive. Alanah is awesome. The line about them being jealous of her successes is accurate here.
There is a lot of discussion happening in the background of our project here. We could not anticipate all of the challenges that we were going to face a few years ago. One of the reasons for this was because we had no idea what our choice of a platform would bring....
Beehaw is wonderful and I will follow wherever it ends up. I have another lemmy account, and accounts on other sites for when I’m looking for memes and nonsense.
I feel this one. We have a partner who says “you know” before and after almost everything he says. It’s so distracting that I can barely hear what he is trying to say. I now do my best to avoid interacting with him or his team in any way.

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. As a musician this is both hilarious and amazing. The amount of awesome moments at shows where people clap and start speeding up and get so off and ruin the moment is just so damn high. Yay for Spain. The world needs to learn from you!
