I wonder if people like that are why I was denied volunteer help on indie games with very broken English I wished to fix. :(

Do you still have the other one? I’ve been waiting months. :c

BS is still invite only though.

Imo all daily/frequent use things should be max 15-20 minutes away on foot in an ideal design. I was extremely depressed when I was forced to live in a suburban nightmare with all paths being by busy roads (so unbreathable air) with the closest shop being 40 minutes away.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

There is no import feature, I’m afraid. I just browse by active and when something I don’t like gets in, I block it. It’s very rare nowadays, but still happens occassionally when .world’s reddit-sourced communities gain traction.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Why’d I choose to miss out on content I don’t know of? Hell no.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I used ctrl+f with highlight all and searched for “@”, but it may not be efficient for you if you block users, because you will get 2x@ for every user without a custom username and 0 for every one with custom. Glad to hear I’m not on a block list if you also block users though! I sometimes wonder if many people block me, because I got a comment(s?) from people saying what I post is exactly what they hoped not to see coming over from Reddit (I merely like engaging posts, because I’m here to read from people).

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

You could make a community for that and have people share their block lists. I’m not sure how efficient that’d be with long block lists, as you’d need to add spaces and ! in front of every community, since copying them directly doesn’t save the linebreaks nor hyperlinks, at least for me.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

The new Lemmy version will allow instance blocking. I personally fear using it, because I fear it may nuke the users even when they speak English. I also wish I was less lazy and just used a translator, but, alas, I’m lazy.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, you’ve just engaged with a non-meme content, so there’s a start. :)

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

.ml doesn’t have porn federated, but .world has a few regular and soft porn communities, unless they got banned by now.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Can you tell me what are the gay communities active enough you’ve noticed them? I didn’t see a single one. :(

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Or just communities. IDK how they’ll implement it, but I cannot imagine any use for myself where I don’t risk losing good content, so I’ll just keep selective blocking.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m not a furry, I just wish I’d see any gay posts at all. I assume .ml has no gay content as it blocks nsfw instances and I assume gay topics may be on nsfw instances. :/

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Yesss! If apps accepted webp, I’d be fine, but many things like Discord and so on don’t accept it, at least for avatars.

I’m here solely for text. IDC about videos, music or images. I see this as forums and forums I see as for speaking with people. Consider yourself spoken to.

I think you look perfectly adequate. Best of luck! I hope you get it and the new job suits you well. :)

Sprite,

Honestly, unless you may be 17, no website should request your day and month of birth. It should only ask for month and day if you may be either 17 or 18, but preferably simply ask for age. They ask for too much information which may be used in identity theft or to hack into your accounts.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I swear I’m not a Linux snob, but Linux is legitimely better for the average user than Windows. If you just need to use a browser, as MANY people do, Linux is more lenient on hardware and doesn’t lock you into an update screen of helplessness. I highly recommend ZorinOS, it has an option specifically for older machines.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t use Gnome, as I had other issues with it. I solely use KDE with Wayland on endeavourOS (so Arch). I have multi monitor issues on W10 at work and I’m waiting to upgrade to W11. I’d request Linux, but due to the project I cannot. I’ve heard plenty of bad stuff about Gnome crashing for people and had it crash for me as well. I’d recommend giving KDE a try if you aren’t too tired of trying, but I respect your choice of W11. Most people don’t have multiple screens though. I don’t recommend Linux to niche users, since they may have niche needs.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Dope, I’ve been using EndeavourOS with KDE with Wayland and it’s a great experience. Best distro by far (for myself).

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Signal abadonned supporting SMS completely and afaik RCS is spoken of in regards to SMS.

Disgusting racist pigs. They’re happy ignoring apartheid genociding Palestinians, but perish the thought they try to liberate themselves by the sole means they have left. I’m disgusted with myself that my existence funds this brainrot through taxes.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

Ohh, I got that warning on Adblock Plus on Firefox just now as well. Gonna move back to uBlock and hope it works.

Make the vote UI consistent

I can see downvotes on comments, but on posts there’s only a total score. Can you please make the UI consistent by either giving posts both up and down votes visibility, which would be my preferred course of action, or make comments have only a total value shown like posts? It’s a pet peeve of mine, I mainly just want to see...

BolexForSoup, to linux

Looking to dip my toes into Linux for the first time. I have a 2016 Intel MacBook Pro with pretty solid specs collecting dust right now that I think I’m going to use. Research so far has indicated to me that the two best options for me are likely Mint or Elementary OS. Does anyone have any insight? Also open to other OS’s. I would consider myself decently tech savvy but I am not a programmer or anything. Comfortable dipping into the terminal when the need arises and all that.

Sprite,

Idk anything about laptops, but I revived my father’s gf’s laptop by installing ZorinOS on it. It was practically unusable, still running on Vista. ZorinOS has a special build for older machines which I found suitable for a laptop, and it looks very nice. IDK why people recommend Mint, it looks atrocious, which I fear may put off people from Linux akin to how Ubuntu does, but perhaps I’m wrong. Either way, I find ZorinOS perfect for starting with Linux or even staying on it.

I currently use endeavourOS, because I’m terminal centric, but in reality it’s such a great distro I just open terminal on a whim, type in yay, which updates the system and that’s it.

I totally forgot how terrible a non-ad-free YouTube experience is

So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...

I had 4 ads stop me 4 times in 5 minutes from starting to watch my first video. And they were the long ads you can skip, but if not, they will last. I miss back when a banner at the bottom of the video was an annoyance.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I hate W10 so much I moved to Linux. Cursed tablet-first “OS”. At work we are supposed to get W11 soonish and I look forward to that. It takes a while to roll out new OS in companies. Once it happens, people will get used to it and probably upgrade at home.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

What did you not understand about work? The MS ‘ads’ are about the MS software only afaik and my work requires operating via their suite.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

And lying about why something is charged, although it’s not silly. A takeaway website I worked for adds “service charge” which is literally just a delivery charge, but hidden, because you only see it during finalization. It doesn’t apply to pick-up orders, only delivery. Many websites seem to had adopted it so they can lie about the free delivery.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I wouldn’t call it a silly issue myself. I’d ban all plastic packaging unless proven to have no alternative. I’m also infiuriated with countries for making easily recyclable materials actively hard to recycle: speaking of glass. They make it so you have to take it to a recycling point, which can be sparse depending on your idea. Glass and metals are amazing for recycling. But no, make everything plastic and actively push people away from purchasing glass by making them have to go out of their way to recycle it. Plastic bottles frequently aren’t even better. I had multiple plastic sauce bottles break akin to glass and leak out.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m ambivalent on this one. If the ad on a building serves to keep the charges from tenants lower then I don’t mind (given the ad is somewhat tasteful). Ads for the sake of ads? Yea, fuck that.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I cannot agree on the reuse. The amount of CO2 emited from the extra transportation and water wasted on cleaning, plus the possibility of lower sanitary quality all add into it making less sense than recycling, but perhaps I’m wrong and those are of lesser negative value than the process of recycling.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I actually believe personal use cars should be banned completely (so not affecting ambulances, taxis, public transport and so on). I don’t think it’s a silly inconvinient topic though. I spend 20 minutes commuting to work by bike, by a car or a bus it can be even over an hour, due to how inefficient that type of transit is (not to mention it’s ecological and health issues).

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t have other options. It’s frequently dangerous and very exhausting as it’s a hill-ridden area, but due to the amount of personal use cars, commuting by a bus goes from 20-30 minutes to over an hour as personal use cars create massive traffic. I think it should be mandated for there to be adequate long, mid and short distance public transport with adequate bike lanes and they should also add e-vehicle lanes for e-bikes and so on, since they’re very dangerous on bike lanes from my experience. Banning cars is not an overnight feat, but it would resolve many issues. Of course, alongside it housing and remote work issues should need being resolved, to both provide people option not to live near work and to even be able to live near work. There is no simple issues with simple solutions when it comes to society and its planning.

Is it possible having a lot of communities blocked is affecting the performance of the server I'm on?

I have a lot of communities blocked. Sometimes when I would block, they wouldn’t get blocked, so I’d have to block again. I assume it could be just server temporarily blacking out, but I was wondering if it could be actually related to the community blocks I have. I don’t use any apps, just the browser version with the...

If I checked correctly, I have 455 communities blocked. Any more and .ml may explode. :c

I had a dream about windows and have decided to setup Linux on my laptop. What distro should I use?

I used Ubuntu once a few years ago but had compatability issues so I went back to windows. Not a great programmer but I’d like to learn. I’m not looking to do much gaming beyond DOOM2 and factorio. Mostly looking for privacy and a way to get back into programming (I have this pipe dream of learning Assembly). I’m not to...

I highly recommend ZorinOS for newbies.

Alternatively: openSUSE (if you don’t like terminals), Fedora (required some customization via terminal for me), endeavourOS (just works, arch-based, but the install didn’t work on my old PC for some reason).

I recommend KDE over Gnome for the desktop environment.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Ubuntu literally made me use Windows for years. It was my introduction to Linux and poisoned the well for me. I’m glad I got over it eventually.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

I actually found Plasma as a new user very frustrating, but you can customize it into perfection without needing any extras and it generally just works. Gnome you need to download extra stuff to customize and it frequently doesn’t work, because their corpo hates people adjusting stuff for themselves, for whatever reason.

I loved Biomutant. I wish you as much joy as it brought me. :)

Sprite,

Afaik it’s a bug, based on Patch 3 notes stating “Fixed some cases where the dialogue with Vlaakith would not start in Crèche Y’llek or would trigger on an unintended character.”. I’ve been reporting such occurences since, there’s many. A fix on your end I’ve found is they tend to speak to the last character who took a turn during combat, so if you can finish the combat with your character, you most likely won’t experience this.
