The development of New Exciting Features™ will probably be slower on nonprofit systems, but the enormous costs of moderation will be effectively zero, while simultaneously improving in quality. My prediction for what we’ll eventually see is “fun” ad-supported commercial platforms (assuming they can afford moderation), and a somewhat more “serious” discussion-based Fediverse.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Can you explain what that means in this context? How does defederating Threads prevent Meta from extinguishing anything?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

But how would defederating prevent any of that?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

That’s a common misconception actually, any and all data available via federation is already public and easily scrapable even without running an instance of one’s own. Defederating only hides (in this case) Threads content from users on the instance doing the defederating, but the data is still public. Not to mention copies of it would still be fully available on any extant federated instances.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

But how could interoperability lead to extinguishing? That’s the part I don’t understand. By what means could Threads “extinguish” the network of instances that stay federated?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

If you think about it, Discovery is probably the least progressive of the entire franchsie, but it caught the ire of conservative-minded people because it presents as normal things earlier shows would have made a point to explain.

It’s the same way TOS had entire episodes dedicated to race, and yet in the 90s many people decsibed Sisko simply existing while black as “pandering to the PC crowd”.

To quote captain Kirk: “Some people can be very frightened of change.”

Daystrom provided a place for a more academic-style analysis that would have been drowned out even on r/StarTrek which already didn’t allow low-effort.

Not for everyone, but it worked for those who liked it.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Imo, TOS is the exception because while the series is obviously great, the movies are where those characters really shine. Khan is great and establsihed the film franchise but The Undiscovered Country is nearly a perfect film.

He’s a big Fediverse guy, too. Very active on Mastodon.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but my first Trek game was this one from 1971(!). I played it much later on DOS but can’t believe it was from a time essentially before personal computers.

Also here’s a somewhat obscure one, anyone remember Klingon Honor Guard?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/af/STTNGKHGcover.jpg

I don’t remember it being very good and yet somehow I have an urge to play it again…

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Why am I jealous of this

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Anyone else first play Star Trek (1971)?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I don’t think I ever got very far, I can’t believe it basically predates the personal computer?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I know right? Really glad to see them embracing the Fediverse.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Oh my god I didn’t realize this was OC last time I’m so excited

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Dang put this comment on Memory Alpha

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Man, I was so not into seasons one-three. I watched each one hoping it would just calm tf down and tell one story well instead of bouncing all over the place. But then season four came along and it was one of my favorite Trek seasons ever of any series. And what do people say about it? That it was too slow. I can’t win! Looking forward to five tho.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I find this offensive and yet I can’t find a single reason it’s not an improvement.

Corgana, (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

My hot take is that r/startrekgifs kinda sucked. 90% of it was meta inside jokes that had nothing to do with trek

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Hype level: medium

In all seriousness I really really loved season four and am a bit turned off by the first teaser for season 5 being a CGI action scene featuring a played-out “on three” joke.

Not that any of this will change my behavior in the slightest way. Can’t wait to see everyone in the discussion threads!

Looks like Midjourney or similar.

Pretty sure it’s AI generated anyway. Look at the rank insignia, the weird cuff bars, the weird delta shield, her knuckles, etc

Wanted to share the libredirect Firefox plugin, for abandoning Youtube. (libredirect.github.io)

This is a plugin I found recently and really enjoy. It gives you the opportunity to redirect several webpages to alternatives. For example Youtube to FreeTube or Piped. If I search for youtube in Firefox, FreeTube automatically opens and shows me my feed. I like it, I use it, I can recommend it.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Unfortunatley Reddit’s API changes broke LibReddit. Not sure about Teddit (I would assume so but there’s no mention of it on their github).

The TikTok frontend is my favorite for when someone links me to it, totally cuts out all the garbage and just shows the video.

Not currently, but Mozilla has announced a “dramatic” increase in the available extensions for mobile coming in December, so, fingers crossed.

(as others have pointed out you can with Firefox Nightly and a custom collection)

Same. Would have switched many times over if there was a viable option (not Tildes lol) and was/am very happy to see the Lemmy network establish itself.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Yeah, a not-insubstantial portion of Lemmy users are people who were banned from Reddit and unwilling/unable to adjust behavior to different communities. Good mod/admins should alleviate this over time hopefully.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Some of the bullshit is just kinda human nature. But it’s been interesting to compare the difference vs a place like Reddit which encouraged a lot of the toxicity in order to boost artificial “engagement”.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

HoloISO is SteamOS for non Steam Decks. That would be great option for something that “just works” and is designed for use from the couch with a controller. I haven’t tried this but I’m sure there’s a way to install Kodi for media too.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Thanks for educating me, what’s the difference between the three?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Soverign is really good, I remember thinking how cool it looked the first time we see it in First Contact.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

The Klingon D4 from Into Darkness is similarly one of the better things from that movie.

Yes I agree! Good one

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I like that you mentioned Raven-type, I agree they did a good job with that one.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Man, I don’t think I could disagree with a list more than this one 😅

(Jk all ships are beautiful in Gene’s creation)

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I like all ships but anything other than two nacelles is an affront to the Great Bird of the Galaxy

Corgana, (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

That is the canon design for the Discovery before the far future refit it got.

I thought that was this one, no?

https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/007/645/302/large/andrew-gavrilov-discovery-top-00000.jpg?1507576291

Why did I think the other version was never on-screen?

EDIT: I have been informed the above image is fanart.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Constitution class has only two nacelles, did you mean Stargazer?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

On my best days I can tolerate the presence of a one nacelle ship, maybe even a four nacelle ship. But I’ll be dead in the cold cold ground before I recognize the legitimacy of a THREE nacelle ship.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

You’re absolutely right. I can tolerate four nacelle ships as long as they keep it in the bedroom. Single nacelle ships belong in jail.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

never heard this one actually but I really like it!

He smiles three times:

  • once time he on drugs
  • one time he is bullying Spock
  • one time he is on drugs (taylors version)

Yes. You do it from the “copy” of the community on your instance.

So if you’re on Lemmy.ml and want to subscribe to “c/StarTrek” on StarTrek.website, you can do it from Lemmy.ml/c/[email protected]

If you’re using an app you don’t have to worry about it, also there are browser extensions that simplify it too, the way I describe is without any tools.
