Who puts data on a public website, owned by someone else, and expects their data to be private? Read their terms and conditions.

DirigibleProtein,

Why would I care what other people are listening to?

DirigibleProtein,

DirigibleProtein,

Yes, thank you, trying to work out what I can and want to do with the strength and energy left over after chemo.

DirigibleProtein,

I’m really liking Unread on iPad and iPhone. That is all.

DirigibleProtein,

I was having lunch in the break room on the 23rd floor, vaguely watching the world go by. Two blocks away, a car drove up to the top level of a parking garage, a bunch of guys got out, and cut through the chain link fence separating the garage building from the roof of the building next door. “Well, that’s unusual behaviour “, I thought, and kept watching. When they moved over to that roof and started to break in to the rooftop door, I realised that it was the bank down the street. Called the cops and gave them a running commentary. Eventually when they showed up I got to see the tussle between the cops and the bad guys on the roof. Felt like a tv show.

DirigibleProtein,

Stop meowing at night after I’m asleep.

DirigibleProtein,

They do. Then after I fall asleep, they start walking around the house and yowling.

DirigibleProtein,

“You wouldn’t know it, from some of the things I’ve said over the years, but I like people. I do. I like people, but I like them in short bursts. I don’t like people for extended periods of time. I’m ok with them for a short period of time, but once you get up past around a minute, minute and a half, I gotta get the fuck out of there. And my reason for this is one that you may share, possibly — I have a low tolerance level for stupid bullshit.” - George Carlin

DirigibleProtein,

Woke up with Funky Town (Pseudo Echo) stuck in my head.

Fedora, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu are all good for beginners.

What inconsequential or surprisingly good thing can I get from Aliexpress?

Im curious as I usually use the site very occasionally to get certain electronic parts or order from PCBway like I just picked up some cheap but infinitely better than stock gps antennas for my LoRa T beams and im about to get a set of also still cheap but much better than stock 915mhz antennas but i kinda wanna throw some other...

DirigibleProtein,

Not electronic, but engagement/wedding rings. We got titanium and tungsten carbide rings for both of us for less than $10. Your values may be different, for us it’s not about spending six months salary on a ring, it’s about having matching jewellery to show others we’re joined.

DirigibleProtein,

No polished coal here; she got amethyst and I got sapphire.

Spam calls and texts are driving me fing crazy anyone have suggestions?

After repeated data breaches that no company really seems to give a s— about my phone is blowing up with literally hundreds of spam calls and texts month. I get and make MAAAAYBE 2 or 3 important calls per month, 180-200 of the rest are literally all spam. Anyone have any suggestions, apps ect that they have found refuge with?...

DirigibleProtein,

If they don’t leave a voicemail, then it’s either spam or not urgent.

Fuck the people (like my boss) who say “You’re so hard to get hold of”. Send a message or leave a voicemail, you caveman.

DirigibleProtein,

In many regions it is common to do comparisons with “as” (wie). As in “My dog is bigger as yours” instead of “My dog is bigger than yours”.

I’m (re-)learning Yiddish at the moment, and “as (wie)” is a common construction; it’s interesting to see which words and sentence formats are common (between German and Yiddish), and which aren’t. I wonder if that’s where this usage comes from.

DirigibleProtein,

I never meant to say or imply that you were and I apologise most humbly if it came through that way. I just thought that it was interesting.

DirigibleProtein,

Haven’t seen the movie. (never even heard of it).

Male, 55, don’t have any friends any more after divorce, COVID lockdowns, and isolation due to cancer treatment destroying my immune system.

To be honest, it doesn’t really bother me much. I can do what I want, when I want, without having to deal with other people’s schedules and emotional blackmail.

I’m alone, I’m not lonely

DirigibleProtein,

Whether Petbarn is, or should be, open on Xmas day. My stepson is yelling and stamping his feet, absolutely certain that they are, and if not, they should be, on the off chance that someone needs to buy pet stuff.

DirigibleProtein,

Getting rid of parking spaces just creates frustration among commuters unless you provide real practical alternatives to driving — dedicated bike lanes; proper public transport that has enough seats, runs frequently and on time, and arrives close to where people are going; and/or formal car pooling.

Bicycles aren’t practical for everyone. Public transport that requires passengers to stand for 20 minutes or more while crammed in like sardines; or public transport that runs every half-hour or more, isn’t useful — it actually discourages use of public transport. The only car pooling that I’ve seen work is when it’s organised within large companies so that people are going to the same destination and have something in common to talk about on the ride.

Waving a magic wand and canceling car parks is most definitely not useful unless proper alternatives are available.

Edit: Also, the plural of “minimum” is “minima“.

Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...

DirigibleProtein,

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

DirigibleProtein,

Wouldn’t this be the most logical choice?

Shouldn't browsers protect what users write from being seen by the website (like customer support chats) before hitting send? Would it be difficult to implement?

I’m sure its common knowledge by now that whatever you write in text boxes on customer support chats can be seen by whoever is on the other side, without or before hitting send. Don’t you think that’s a breach of privacy?! I imagine it isn’t too difficult to implement a fix for it: The browser (like Firefox) could choose...

DirigibleProtein,

Open notepad or similar locally, write your message, think about it, delete, go back and edit, when you’re ready, copy and paste into the chat window. You can save your side of the chat so that you have a record of what you said.

DirigibleProtein,

I want to see magnetic fields, similar to pigeons and other migrating birds. Or colours beyond the visible spectrum.

DirigibleProtein,

I read an article years ago about a guy who put magnetic sensors and vibrator motors in his belt so that every time he turned, the north side of him would buzz. Apparently after a while, he stopped noticing, and just “knew” which way was north.

Found this while looking for that article.

What should be used for anonymous usernames?

More often than not, the best way to hide is to simply blend in with the crowds – this also encompasses one’s choice for a username. It is relatively simple to make a single throwaway account – just come up with a username, and off you go – however, if one makes throwaway accounts often, the task of thinking of a unique,...
