I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of folks’ views.

ALostInquirer,

do you have horticultural tips for growing big bananas?

ALostInquirer, (edited )

I was searching to find an answer and came across this discussion, so for others asking: how to block an instance? (or alternatively: how to block instances? additional search terms to help find this: blocking instance on Lemmy? Lemmy instance blocking?)

If you’re on the web version of your Lemmy site/instance, click your username>settings>blocks, and this next part may depend on your display resolution or amount of blocked users/communities, but in any event: scroll down/look to the bottom left and if your instance is on the latest version of Lemmy there should be a new box labeled Block instance.

Click the menu/button to the right of the Block instance text and a search dropdown will appear. Type in or copy/paste the name of the instance you want to block, and if your site/instance has connected to it, it should show up in the search results. Click the result and wait a moment till the message “[instance name] blocked” appears. Depending on what your site/instance’s running on, general traffic, or other technical things, the time for that message appearing may vary.

Regardless, if you don’t see an immediate response, don’t be thrown off, it’s just taking some time.

p.s. giving a mention to ya @RainfallSonata so you’ll see this reply too. Btw, like your name!

ALostInquirer,

To clarify a little, I was asking more about things where…Importance isn’t so much a factor. It’s more to do with wanting to know whatever new oddity might be around to check out. Passivity in this situation is allowing others to have more input on what reaches you, which isn’t always reliable if you want to explore different stuff.

I need to figure out a better way to frame this question. 🤔

ALostInquirer,

How so?

ALostInquirer,

I should check again to see if any of these are even around me, as part of why I asked is that I’m not aware of any indie/small theatres nearby.

ALostInquirer,

Would you happen to have any highlights from these you’d recommend reading?

ALostInquirer,

Gotcha, appreciate the heads-up! This is a nice way to find new authors to read!

ALostInquirer,

The Corpus Christi-based Harte Research Institute, which is part of Texas A&M University, shared its latest find last week on Facebook. To be clear, Jace Tunnell, director of community engagement, can’t tell what exactly is in this bottle because he declines to open it.
[…]
“Folks in certain cultures around the world put vegetation or other objects in a bottle,” the institute wrote on Facebook. “They are counter magical devices whose purpose is to draw in and trap harmful intentions directed at their owners.”

🤨 Is the reason for not opening it out of concern for unleashing the trapped harmful stuff back upon the remote owner, or more simply that they may be kinda nasty?

ALostInquirer,

With all of that, and no useful reason to set up and test what’s inside, why bother? Curiosity isn’t usually a valid case for expenditure of public funds when there’s no threat to anyone or anything that can be “fought” against.

Tbh I’d say curiosity is a totally valid expenditure of public funds given ample oversight, but I do tend to agree this isn’t necessarily such a situation. Nevertheless, I appreciate ya highlighting the respectful angle to not opening it, as I can be unintentionally careless when it comes to some rituals/beliefs. The whole bull in a china shop with’em sometimes, especially when curiosity gets the better of me.

ALostInquirer,

Do they try to consume what they blend afterward? 😜

ALostInquirer,

Remember seeing this mentioned in another thread and ngl I was surprised to see it (and then not surprised that they were sold out some places, lol).

ALostInquirer,

I agree that cheap would be <$100, but when it comes to smartphones I was thinking in terms of something that would be considered more performant, and that that might have you looking more at options over $100. I may be whiffing on some decent cheaper models though, so feel free to mention them!

Budget in the title was for the range mentioned, but not meant to exclude anything cheap or cheaper, by any means.

ALostInquirer,

what if you tried squatting some properties instead?

ALostInquirer,

This Meshtastic, I take it? I haven’t personally used it, but it sounds interesting! Not too surprising there’s not much info about it though, as it does sound rather niche.

ALostInquirer,

Which of these have people here played, and might recommend?

ALostInquirer,

…Won’t this potentially make the last part even more complicated in terms of messaging platform compatibility compliance though…? 🤔

Then again, it seems like it would make much more sense to consolidate all their chat/messaging services into WhatsApp anyway and deal with compliance that way.

ALostInquirer,

In this scenario I think it’d be likely that they’re being quiet for some reason that’s literally incomprehensible to human-level minds, since they’re likely millions or billions of years more advanced than we are.

Why’s that? It’s not an imposition on my part, especially given that unlike the usual scenarios where the reason one might imagine them to be more advanced is that they aren’t nearby and are capable of reaching us from afar somehow.

Scenario I’ve posed is pretty basic, say some extraterrestrial civilizations were nearby (say, we’re both able to travel & communicate in a more timely fashion than waiting decades for each trip/exchange), but they’re not talking to us because ??? and so…How might ya get’em to meet & talk?

ALostInquirer,

I like to imagine a sort of awkward strangers reasoning for it, personally, where it’s not a matter of anything untoward involved, so much as nobody able to decide how to break the ice. Supposing that, I wonder what the cosmic icebreaker might be?

ALostInquirer,

Yeah, let me try to break it down better:

  1. Browsing All Feeds.
  2. Tap article headline to view/read article, set to use Feeder’s built-in reader.
  3. Try to fetch full article, if successful, proceed to read to end.
  4. Tap system back button (or app’s back button).
  5. Sometimes it scrolls either up or down in All Feeds to newer/older articles (I think typically down, I’ve not tracked it carefully enough to say for sure).
  6. Expected behavior: return to All Feeds in-place viewing the article headline I tapped into and read, changed from unread to read (unbolded).

I think I’ve observed this issue more often after recently syncing All Feeds and trying to scroll through them without closing and reopening the app.

ALostInquirer,

Have you watched Shin Godzilla as well? If so, how’s it compare with that? That was the last Godzilla movie I saw and I really dug it.

ALostInquirer,

Nice, I’ll have to see if I can find a time to go see it!

ALostInquirer,

Thanks! Here’s to hoping it grows into a helpful space for folks! Remember to mention it to anyone else that might be interested!

ALostInquirer,

[…] go make a difference in local politics or wherever you can actually influence anything.

I agree, however I think most anyone that may only be grumbling may find themselves doing so as they’re stuck on the question of, how do I get involved? Where do I get started with any of it?

The answers will vary by locality and how they’re organized, but some direction (that is, examples) is better than none.

ALostInquirer,

What might help to effect this change? If I’m not mistaken, a number of states are almost under single-party rule, particularly those that might benefit most from this kind of change.

Is it something that may be built up from a municipal to county to state level to then establish on a national level?

ALostInquirer,

I’m not familiar with those, so this might be a bad suggestion, but the short description makes me think this may still fit, have you read The City & the City by China Miéville?

It’s set in two overlapping cities, whose inhabitants diligently disregard the other city’s until they formally cross the borders, and it’s a crime to do otherwise. It’s a pretty compelling read imo!

ALostInquirer,

On 5, have you heard of Crying Suns? Crying Suns is more in the vein of FTL, so not a deckbuilder, but if memory serves I think it has the branching map to it.

It’s received some praise for its setting from what I gather, but I haven’t gotten around to seriously playing it, so can’t speak much to that.

What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

By commercialism, I’m aiming at a mix of spending a lot and sifting through bloated business models (e.g. this or that accessory/equipment, microtransactions, etc.). Feel like many can relate to this sort of commercial fatigue, and yet it creeps even into hobbies where one tries to unwind....

ALostInquirer,

I see commercialism as exploitive, just purchasing things not so much.

Yeah, to elaborate a little, the question’s more aimed at finding activities that aren’t actively trying to rope you into buying more and more to keep up. A couple classic examples of what I had in mind to avoid would probably be like a trading card game or some tabletop game with collectible(?) miniatures (not sure what those games are called), whereas with crafting hobbies it’s simply a necessity upon exhausting craft materials.

ALostInquirer,

Ooh, cool! Cards of varying sizes?

I’ve thought about getting into this 'cause my favorite part of old trading cards was more the art than the games they were associated with.

ALostInquirer,

Learning card magic. You can go a long way with just a pack of cards and the 52Kards YouTube channel

I’ll have to give that a look! I’ve been trying to get better at some different card shuffles, as it’s both practical and fun to do.

ALostInquirer,

Thanks! I’ll have to keep this in mind next time I’m getting supplies to try some of these out. I initially started with some standard Pentel pens and some blank index cards for practicing on when the thought struck me to try out making some small cards.

ALostInquirer,

Security PSA: Don’t enter passwords or other secrets for important accounts directly into a third party UI.

By chance, would you (or some other passerby) happen to know how this is handled with the Lemmy apps/interfaces? I’ve been mixed on using them since I’m unclear how they’re handling this info.
