I used to think like this, but I’m not sure I do anymore.
First, it seems like it’d be much harder to create alternate systems if the people in power are making it even harder to achieve basic survival (unless you advocate for accelerationism). As much as we all despise capitalism, there are degrees of shitness within it. And as much as I dislike the current system of power and wish we could ignore it, it does ultimately wield a lot of power that can lessen suffering sometimes. As an example, Medicaid alone allowed 83 million people this year to have access to healthcare, and it would be an incalculable loss if it was allowed to be gutted nationwide. Add to that that Biden is, at the very least, not interfering too much with the resurgence in unions, which will further enable people to survive easier, and expose a new generation of workers to the power they wield. And the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) was a pretty decent step in the right direction for climate change, and is something that we at a grassroots level wouldn’t have been able to implement (I.E, big businesses getting financial incentives to switch away from fossil fuels, big financial subsidies to alternative power companies, etc). I hate capitialism, but manipulating their psychological need for profit into doing the right thing is overall a good thing, and is sadly needed until we’re able to find a way off the capitalism train altogether.
Second, while every previous election in U.S. history has seemingly always been a choice between an evil and a lesser evil, in this very specific case, it’s a choice between a lesser evil and an openly fascist wannabe dictator that wants to “eliminate the communist vermin” (He actually said that).
If we look to history, I feel it’s important to point out Hitler was ultimately voted in initially (or at least his party was, since it was a Parliament, and he won the most seats). That majority win likely allowed for him to create policies and laws that enabled him to further his grip until it was unstoppable. How easy was it for socialists and anarchists to ignore politics in Nazi Germany and build alternate systems or feed the homeless when their government was literally hunting them with secret police? Things are bad in America, but bear in mind they could be so much worse (and I know that argument is used a lot to maintain the status quo, it’s the neoliberal democrat’s main thing they use to get you to keep voting them in, but fuck me guys, this time the stakes are high AF).
This is like the one time we should really engage hard, and then after it’s all over, and we can breathe a little easier, go back to focusing more on mutual aid until another Trump-like figure pops up, which will hopefully be a while.
I guess the problem didn’t exist in the above-mentioned case because he planted along a waterline.
I think so, as he recently did a video where he goes back and visits the area 2 years later (plan to post that tomorrow), and he estimated that about 70% survived.
As others have said, you’re in that pocket of time where the game wants more than DOS, but less than modern windows, which isn’t well catered to. Your best option is a windows 98 or 95 virtual machine, which is doable, but not trivial or quick to set up.
recently I bought a Chromebook, I love it so much, it has Linux container enabled and I downloaded Firefox, GIMP, and Krita, but my Chromebook is only 64GB, so that can be a lot!!! So what web apps or low storage alternatives can I use?? I know Photopea, but what about drawing? Thank you!!
I recently stumbled across this superb little word processor, and I’m just blown away by how good it for being made by one dude for free. It’s like a slimmed down version of Scrivener or Papyrus, with a wonderfully simple and easy to use interface....
Manuskript is unfortunately a very buggy piece of software, with regular freezes and crashes. And the UI is, in my opinion, extremely clunky and unintuitive. I love open source software, but I can’t in good conscience recommend anyone use it.
Scrivener did have a linux version that they stopped developing, and they ended up giving away the last version. Someone packed it in an appimage for easy use, should be able to find it if you search appimage scrivener. It’s a pretty feature complete release, and still works well to this day.
Firefox requires this addon to install PWA’s onto the system, unfortunately. But the application can be used from any browser if you don’t mind using it there.
The source code is available here, and though he mentions only open-sourcing the old version, Version 4 (the latest) appears to be available there under the MIT license.
The Google docs integration is, AFAIK, only there if you want to access your document from anywhere and any device. Otherwise it works perfectly well standalone, allowing you to save your document in either wavemaker format or as a .doc.
Using a social-historical approach, the author focuses on the mercenaries the corporations enlisted in their anti-union efforts and considers the paramilitary methods unions developed to counter them. The book also traces the economic restructuring which transformed corporate anti-unionism
Most people take a simple view of cash: they have a checking account for spending and a savings account for savings, and if they get fancy, they’ll have a CD for longer term savings goals. Power users will change to an online bank with better returns, and that’s about as far as it goes. That certainly works, but we can do a...
Of note regarding money markets: Nothing beats the Vanguard money market. It has the highest return currently (floating at around 5.28 last I checked) combined with the lowest expense ratio of any ‘normal’ fund (one that doesn’t have a 100k+ minimum deposit required).
Schwab also has a higher return than fidelity, and a slightly lower expense ratio.
Fidelity has the worst returns, and the highest expense ratio. However, the difference between the three are mostly inconsequential unless you’re plopping a lot of money in there. Still, free money is free money, and all three brokers are reputable.
Vanguard has the worst customer service out of the three though, so that kinda negates the better returns, especially if you ever find yourself in a position where you need it.
Upside of fidelity are the zero cost index funds they offer.
To the OP’s point, I think you make a strong case. Still probably good to have a regular local credit union as backup and to easily deposit cash, (fidelity’s unusual bank account number can very occasionally not jive with some things reportedly).
Also, there is a security concern if your brokerage account is attached to your cash account, as I believe it would be possible to drain the brokerage account with the cash accounts debit card, as the money market assets in the broker account will be liquidated to cover expenses incurred in the cash account if it becomes emptied.
I also never looked into how Fidelity deals with fraud. Shwab’s cash account is a real bank, while fidelity’s is technically not, so there might be some differences there that I’m not aware of.
If there was really solid bike infrastructure, I think covered electric tricycles capable of towing small capsule trailers could fill that gap fairly well. Something like this or this.
I don’t play or promote videogames, I honestly just want to focus on developing open source software!! And I know that Tux and other mascots have their own open source games, but do you think the developers of mainline Linux play videogames??
I was afraid to say it in case you liked him but YES. When I first got into Linux I subscribed to his standalone show on youtube, but he was so god damned long winded, I can’t tolerate any of his content now, especially since he got ‘weird’
Oh, damn. Thanks for finding that man. Now I’m not sure where I read his stance on closed-source art. I might be mixing that up with Torvalds stance in tivoization, but I’m not sure. It might’ve been the Lunduke interview Wzstolzing mentioned.
Very few games would qualify for that, unfortunately. One of the few that comes to mind would be when iD released the source code to Doom 1, 2, and 3 under GPL, but with the assets still under copyright.
