Even if it were a gender thing, that’s still discrimination in the UK, you can’t sack people over that here.

Madness. They’re going mental over there. I hope they can purge these fascists before the fascists purge them, because gods knows they’re working towards it.

How dare you, browsing by everything top 12 hours is clearly superior

Huh, I guess I should find out what Matrix is!

It’s got an ominous name for sure xD but then Discord isn’t exactly a happy name either :P

Robots are already a veeeeeeery popular thing. Look at any car factory.

There won’t be much difference between those and general purpose AI robots, except that the general purpose ones will be WAY more capable and profitable.

Humans will always have jobs, but that doesn’t mean the trend of automation and advances replacing jobs won’t continue, and maybe accelerate too.

Fun fact, we don’t use bottles like this in the UK, our pills are all in blister packs. Each individually sealed until it’s needed.

Contradicting federal health officials, Florida Gov. DeSantis recommends against new COVID booster (apnews.com)

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s top health department official are directly contradicting federal health recommendations and warning residents against getting a new COVID-19 booster, saying there’s not enough evidence it provides benefits that outweigh risks....

Interesting, this sort of intentional dangerous disinformation would be illegal here coming from a trusted public figure, what sort of charges will this De Santis guy be brought up on?

If there’s evidence he did it, it should be a pretty open and shut case.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Lustre, not luster. But I digress, I wish I had a better social connection with office colleagues, but yeah, everyone has to travel long distances to get home and they all have families and other responsibilities, it’s impossible to socialise unfortunately.

Even when it is possible, usually colleagues are a disparate bunch with wildly different interests and personalities, and probably wouldn’t make great friends anyway, as nice and professional as they all are at the office.

It’s very depressing and lonely, but yeah. It seems like the older you get, the more impossible it is to make a friend.

They’re gonna delete my game without giving me a refund? Fuck them.

obinice,

Damn, reminds me of when they announced copy and paste was coming to their phones as if it was some incredible breakthrough, and yet everyone else had it on their phones for a long time already.

Now they’re adding basic map features from a decade ago and have the gaul to suggest to their customers that it’s new and innovative?

I wonder what other old, basic phone features Apple customers just don’t have. I feel sorry for them, people playing that much for a premium device deserve better.

Finally, somewhere I might be able to visit there and feel at least a little bit safe in public.

I understand the reasoning and positivity behind this and I do believe it comes from a really good place, it may even be beneficial to customers, but it is gender discrimination in the workplace, whether it leads to mostly positive outcomes for some people or not.

If your employees bring in different amounts of money because you’ve started to split their available workloads based on gender (especially in an industry where gender has no impact on one’s ability to do the job), you’re now likely to decide that due to this trend over time, to discriminate further, prioritising the more popular genders over others when hiring, and when firing, and when deciding wages.

After all, if one gender brings in less profits consistently than the others - because they’re stifled by company policy - why pay them as much? It makes business sense to pay them what they’re worth, and they’re measurably worth less than the other genders, now.

It’s a slippery slope. Well intentioned, but damages equality in the workplace.

How is it 2023, when everybody uses microwave radios for communication constantly, and there are still people that don’t understand the absolute basics, like the difference between radio/light radiation and ionising radiation? And how important transmit power is to how dangerous or not a radio wave is?

They do teach this stuff in schools still, right?

It boggles my mind. It’s not some complex difficult topic, it’s like not knowing how electricity works, or how your body works. This is basic child level knowledge that everybody interacts with every single day, so it behoves them to understand it at least at an introductory level.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Treating people as sub-human - no longer with the same basic human rights, like the right to vote, as others - just for committing a crime, is an extremely dangerous fascist road to go down.

Criminals exist, they are people, and they have as much right to take part in the democratic process as anybody else. Equality is the cornerstone of democracy.

There are many good small phones from other companies, those small phone lovers aren’t exactly left in the lurch, they’ve got options, thankfully.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Is this not illegal in your country?

Perhaps you could contact some of the politicians sending you these texts and ask them what they’re going to do to make it illegal?

I miss you, GrayStillPlays.

Setting up a network file share or FTP server or whatever and the app to access it is muuuch more effort than just plugging my phone in and using it like any other flash storage device, plus USB3 transfer speeds are better.

For me it’s just simpler and less prone to error is all.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Apple really done want to just adopt the global standards of USB, do they xD

Anything they can do to feel special and squeeze more money out of their customers, forcing them to remain in a proprietary ecosystem and buy more stuff that only works with Apple products, etc

It’s not that guy that looked like a supervillain every time he got up on stage at E3, is it?

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Look up the DIY parabolic reflectors people used to use on their WiFi antennas, they did actually work! I used one and recorded a marked improvement in WiFi strength at the furthest point in my home that was previously a low connection quality spot.

Radio waves come out of an antenna and just go in every direction, so a router against your outer wall is wasting a lot of its energy just directed into the neighbour’s house. If you can reflect some of that back in, you get improved signal reception. It’s very cool :-)

It’s a dead man’s switch, if new episodes don’t keep getting released, its assumed that the USA has fallen and by the computers monitoring, and the nukes are automatically launched.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

When they say “soda fountains”, is that just USA talk for drinks machines?

I must have heard the phrase a hundred times but it only just clicked in my head that that must be what a soda fountain is 😅

She’s an absolute scumbag, but yes, certain dog breeds that only exist to be violent, such as Rottweilers, should simply be ended. That’s pretty obvious, I would have thought.

But… Violent people don’t care about the safety of others, and don’t see a problem with abusing dogs to get what they want out of them either.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, but who is building the vast energy grid infrastructure required to move the gargantuan amounts of electricity that will be required once all vehicles make the switch?

I’m all for it, but I don’t hear anybody talking about the huge national grid upgrades that will be required, or who’s going to pay for it all, or how many years it’ll take to get done.

Everyone seems to talk about building more chargers, but not going any further than that.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

In what way will it replace or integrate with Discord?

One stop solution for all chat apps my arse.

obinice,

Damn, fascinating and evil haha. Do you know if one of those states is the United Kingdom? I might spread the word amongst my friends and family.

In classrooms children shouldn’t remove their phones from their pockets at all, they are there to focus on the class. If we removed our phones from our pockets, they would be confiscated until the end of class, and rightly so.

School is for paying attention and learning, not for going into your own little world on your phone (which we’re all guilty of).

Also, the only time you need to use a computer at school is during IT lessons, or study/research sessions. School is the time that we learn and perfect our handwriting abilities, and our abilities to read through books, make notes based on what the teacher is saying, or writing on the blackboard, etc. It is not appropriate to pull out a laptop and use that instead, because that won’t teach the child these important hand skills.

I’m talking about primary school and secondary school, and mostly college too. Once the student is 18 and begins university, there’s nothing stopping them from using computers or phones, it’s up to them to regulate their own attention and such.

I think that’s all pretty reasonable and fair.

@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Because then I’d lose the wonderful texture of a good tomato, sauces are just not the same.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Well, it appeals to the American fantasy of guns and the military, kinda the point I suppose.

They’re indoctrinated from a very young age to think that war related is impressive, or something to be admired.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t mean to sound rude at all, I’m just genuinely curious how it is that you can’t identify what 3am means? I’m guessing maybe English isn’t your native language, or such?

Again, no negativity intended, I’m just really curious :-)

Nebraska governor signs executive order defining men as "bigger, stronger and faster" (boingboing.net)

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen, a Republican not noted as a women’s rights supporter, yesterday issued an executive order “defining” males and females and the attributes thereof. The anti-transgender political grandstanding offers fusty explanations of the sexes–men are “bigger, stronger and faster” on average–in...

I’m not from there and didn’t know where it was going, and this user’s explanation is very important, I’m glad they shared it <3

I’ve noticed that there’s a shift in UI design currently back to the 2000s style of round UI design, which eventually moved out of the way for nice straight crisp corners when we shifted from CRTs to LCDs which could render pixel perfect images at last.

We never limited the viewport on a browser of course, that’s madness. But just look at XP’s bubbly design and interfaces of the time vs Win8/10’s very angular, clean crisp interface.

I do hope we’re not descending back into an age of curves, I’m not a fan. But styles come and go every few decades, and maybe younger people today are ready to experience their “age of curves” for the first time?

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Wait, it’s out? I never even knew they’d announced when it’d be airing yet, haha

obinice,

Oooh, I’ve never even heard of searx or anything like this, sounds right up my alley though!! :-D Thank you

Does it help that I don’t know who Steve Crowder is? I suspect he’s done something bad if people don’t like him, but seeing as I don’t even know the guy, he can’t be that globally famous. So…I couldn’t care less about the guy 🤷‍♀️

How to be less racist/bigotred?

So I am a part of the LGBTQ community and work in a big city in middle europe. A lot of my coworkers are religios and have a foreign background. They are mostly very nationalist and homo-/transphobic. I hate them for their blind hate and bigotry, which wont change. I have realised, that I have become a bit bigotred towards...

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Being religious or homophobic isn’t a ethnic group. OP is basically growing a hatred for bigoted/sexist/xenophobic people because they’re forced to interact with them on a regular basis, which sucks for sure :-(

Blocks of flats are awful places. No garden to put up a workshed, or greenhouse or anything at all, or play with your dog or kids (and no dog - it would be cruel to keep a dog in a flat and not have it able to roam a garden all day), they’re noisy, loud neighbours can be above, below, to the left, to the right, and in front …

You can’t modify your home how you’d like, can’t choose what utility companies run into your home, can’t let your kid cycle up and down the street and still be able to see and hear them from the windows etc.

I see your point about density absolutely, but I HATE flats. Awful places.

I also hate how people have started trying to make them sound fancy and posh by calling them “apartments” to try to sound fancy and European/French, as if that will make them more appealing.

Yeah, he’s not the best source for information of any kind really, good production values though. All you need is a slick production and people will eat up anything you say.

To be fair, they were dismantling a wind farm to mine the coal instead just the other day, but I see your point of course.
