Lotta good recommendations here. If you get GrapheneOS, you could get any keyboard (including GBoard) and turn off its network access at the app level (as well as sensors and other permissions), which would make virtually any keyboard privacy-friendly.

Elf.

I know Will turned down an obscene amount of money for it, and it was prolly the right decision, but I’m still surprised a sequel never got made given how popular Elf continues to be.

Or at least the option to make it the default. I could see some situations where someone may want to test a link with non-identifying parameters (like identifying the campaign source), and not wanting to have that stripped from the URL by default.

But I get you, from a consumer perspective I’d also want it as my default.

In the meantime, there’s ClearURLs or uBlock Origin with filter lists.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

Or uBlock Origin with filter lists. 👍

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

What do you mean? Tons of links on the web have trackers appended to the URL.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

As of this writing, it doesn’t look like it.

As @SatyrSack here mentioned, URLChecker is a good way to manipulate a URL before opening it.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

If anything, URLCheck is even more necessary on mobile devices, particularly iOS where Firefox is just reskinned Safari. On Firefox for Android, you could install the ClearURLs extension, or use uBlock Origin filter lists.

With that said, there are other use cases. For example: Friends or family might share URLs from social media. They often contain unique identifiers that you can strip before clicking the link by using URLCheck.

I looked for it in about:config, but I couldn’t narrow it down and see which parameter it was (if it’s even in there at all yet).

For some people it’s easy, for others it isn’t, and/or they’re afraid of messing it up.

This is the secondary reason why I created SwapMyOS, a GrapheneOS installation service that kicks back a percentage of every order to the GrapheneOS nonprofit to keep it funded.

Primary reason was to keep GrapheneOS alive and funded.

I got someone to use Signal recently, because I don’t text outside of it. Last week, she asked me why that is. I sent this Bruce Schneier essay on the eternal value of privacy to someone who knows absolutely nothing about tech, and she understood.

I’m gonna try it again next time it comes up with someone else. I think this essay does a really good job of putting it into perspective, so I’m hoping this is the silver bullet I can continue to send when someone asks.

Overall, in general, I try to keep it in real world terms. Why do you close the door when you go to the bathroom? Why do you lock your doors? Why do you have curtains/blinds? etc., along with what some other intelligent people responded here.

Pixel with GrapheneOS.

Started using it last year and enjoyed it so much that a few weeks ago I started a GrapheneOS installation service called SwapMyOS.

I created it to keep GrapheneOS funded and running. (I kick back a percentage of revenue to the nonprofit.)

If I was Microsoft, I’d wanna know too. After all, it’s a race for every single one of our data points, and then some.

Either way, you gotta admit it’s ironically funny that Microsoft wants to keep/poach Chrome users into their own… wait for it… Chromium-based browser.

I wanna preface this by saying that I run GrapheneOS (GOS), so idk if that has anything to do with the fact that nothing has flagged my version of KDE Connect. If it’s a Google Play Services (GPS) thing, then:

  1. I guess it depends on whether you run GPS on your GOS phone, or
  2. Maybe it doesn’t even depend on #1, since GPS runs as unprivileged. I put KDE it on my GPS profile, and didn’t get any notification about this.

Guessing this is just a Play Protect thing.

Nevertheless, if you’re installing FOSS apps, try installing them via Obtanium instead of the Google Play Store.

You can simply copy and paste the source code URL into Obtanium, and it’ll grab the APK, as well as notify you when there’s updates.

It supports F-Droid, GitHub, GitLab, and other sources.

The reason for Android's Notification system being better than iOS, is solely due to the ability to turn off individual aspects of an application's notifications.

Google, the poor multi-billion dollar scrappy startup that maintains Android, made a payment app that has one notification setting, "Google Pay". So all the ads, promotions, everything.

3rd party apps like PhonePe & Paytm have a better system.

How do you manage to maintain this OS?

Curious: do OEM Android users also get granular app permissions? (Like turning sensors off at the app level)

Signal for everything.

There are a couple people who are too lazy to get Signal, and they got iPhones, so I set up an iMessage server to forward messages to my GrapheneOS phone.

But the communication there is extremely sparse and surface level. It’s basically just a touch point. The real conversations all go through Signal.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe a good idea for a blog post, but the general gist is this:

  1. Buy an old/cheap Mac mini
  2. Set up AirMessage or BlueBubbles (open source)
  3. Run a command or get an app so keep your Mac mini (or whatever other Apple device you’re using) awake 24/7

The messages will get delivered to your Mac, and then forwarded to your phone via AirMessage or BlueBubbles.

You should vocalize it to the owner (or at least management) if you can. You’d be surprised what comes of it.

I did this once with a restaurant/bar owner, and she was very understanding. Once I took the time to explain how I didn’t wanna be subjected to everything that a setup like that brings, she empathized and actually got a standalone website.

Many people aren’t aware until you make em aware. And whether they feel the same or not from a consumer standpoint, at least they’ll know that there’s people out there who do care, and it affects business. And usually, if it affects business, it doesn’t matter what their personal feelings towards it are. A good business owner will be sure to adjust because they learned something new about the market.

It’s easy to scoff at this whole “You will own nothing, and you will be happy” phrase, but it’s really gone too far already.

Photon’s so clean. From a pure design perspective, it might be my favorite.

But after trying Alexandrite, I started missing the paneling. It seems really easy to lose your location on Photon since you gotta click into everything.

Haven’t decided between Photon’s nicer UI vs. Alexandrite’s more convenient UX.

Haven’t tried Liftoff, but Thunder’s really clean. Just needs more features. In due time.

If you wanna keep your bookmarks and the subreddits (communities) that you’re subscribed to before deleting your Reddit account, I made a free tool to help you store and offload that data.

It’s called Reddit Account Manager, and it’s 100% free.

You can also use it to manage your Lemmy account(s), of course.

hiramfromthechi,

Your question’s a little nuanced, so let me try to answer this as thoroughly as possible:

The short answer is: If the platform you choose to use it is accessible from your Android phone, then yes. But it’s not Android- or iOS-specific.

Out of the platforms that it’s available on (Airtable, Notion, Coda, ClickUp, and Baserow), all of them except for Baserow have native mobile apps. With that said, Baserow is also mobile responsive, so you don’t need a native mobile app to work with Reddit Account Manager.

  • Reddit Account Manager is a template built on top of those tools (Airtable, Notion, Coda, ClickUp, and Baserow), so you’ll need an account with at least one of those to use it.
  • Reddit Account Manager is built without code.

Hope that clears things up. :)

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, the ideal workflow for migrating would be something like this:

  1. Use Reddit Account Manager to neatly organize and store your Reddit accounts, bookmarks, and subscriptions
  2. Request your data archive from Reddit itself
  3. Use something like Redact or Power Delete Suite to remove your content from Reddit
  4. Permanently delete your accounts from Reddit
  5. Move to a federated alternative (optional)

You could use a service like SimpleLogin, Addy, Duck, or just a temporary fake email generator. I don’t mind if you give me a fake email address—you have a right to privacy.

If it helps, my website’s hiram.io. I realize that’s still “random” in the grand scheme of things, but it should at least show you I’m a real person, and I build stuff to build a better web.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

I’d open source it if I could, but since Reddit Account Manager is built without code, I can’t host it on GitLab or GitHub.

A testament to how important good legislation is… most—if not all—privacy issues that we face today are in large part due to legislative failures.

Isn’t there something that scrapes posts from Reddit like a newsfeed?

If you got an Android, there’s Stealth. On iOS, you’re SOL as far as I know.

Or do most people just use lemmy.world now?

This would be the best avenue, yeah. I thought it was gonna be difficult to leave Reddit too, but thankfully, I was wrong.

hiramfromthechi,
@hiramfromthechi@lemmy.world avatar

I’d love to, but I can’t—it’s built without writing code.

The closest I can get to “open sourcing” it is freely allowing everyone to clone it and modify it as they see fit, but limited to the platforms I built it on (Notion, Coda, Airtable, Baserow, etc.).

I would if I could, but I built it without writing code. So there’s nothing to upload to GitHub/GitLab.

The page asking for your email simply serves as the delivery mechanism since I can’t put it on GitHub/GitLab.
