monsterpiece42,

I have a 91 Chevy S10 that I will likely be buried in. I’ve had it for nearly 15 years and it’s my favorite. I learned to drive in an S10 and sadly we had to sell that one. I bought the current one as a “replacement” and I love it even more. It is objectively not that great, but it’s clean and runs well and when it dies, it’s getting a V8.

monsterpiece42,

About $100k would be the delta to move where is rather be.

monsterpiece42,

I know grammar is hard, but OP is clearly saying that using a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom seems pointless, not music listening in general.

Maybe at least be correct if you’re going to be a dick.

monsterpiece42,

Music listening in general ≠ listening to music in the shower.

Maybe at least be correct if you’re going to be a dick.

monsterpiece42,

In this vein I also recommend the KISS launcher on F-Droid. It’s super clean. Highly recommend if you like focused phone usage.

monsterpiece42,

Spacesniffer for me. Also portable. But I’ll check out wiztree for funzies.

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. I literally only use windows so I can play Fortnite with friends. PSA: you can have both Linux and Windows, or you can use a vm in...

monsterpiece42,

As others have said, I also highly recommend physically separate drives. I have found both Linux and Windows affect each other sometimes especially when you’re getting your bearings with dual booting.

For instance, after running Linux the clock in Windows will be wrong. And Windows will eat the Linux boot partition especially after feature packs (formerly called service packs), which come out about 1-2/year.

monsterpiece42,

All these are top level stupid except racking a shotgun. It’s loud, sounds exactly like one thing, and is one further deterrent before possibly ending a life.

That said, no guarantees that the person who said it wasn’t an idiot.

Vivaldi is chromium based and far better than the alternatives imo. They’re openly anti-big tech, push the fediverse, and will be forking starting at manifest v3.

Some grumpy MFs in here…

The real answer is education. Educate everyone that will listen and the assholes will fade to black over time.

It’s true. I work in a computer shop and we see literally thousands and thousands of dollars lost from people clicking on ads that look like normal buttons (things like “Download”, “Next”, etc). And not just the elderly either. Everyone has a a combination of inputs to get scared and comply. Folks that are otherwise extremely competent and savvy can get scammed too.

The best security you can have online is adblockers, only beaten by using trusted websites.

Edit, fair points with sites being slimy these days. I meant using legitimate versions of websites rather than copy/fake websites designed to steal credentials.

monsterpiece42,

Yes, these exactly. There does seem to be a bias towards sites with multi-page articles (think Yahoo news, BuzzFeed type stuff), and what I’ll call “disposable income listings” like boat and sports car-listing websites.

monsterpiece42,

I’m a new programming student and the single best thing I have done is just start trying to do projects. Sure I have VS Code or Eclipse in one window and maybe Stack Overflow or chatgpt in the other but I slog through it and it has been for more helpful than all the reading and tutorials… I’ve learned far more. I wish I had started this years ago.

monsterpiece42,

Give your balls a tug, titfucker!

Which YouTuber's voice can lull you to sleep?

I’ve exhausted things I can sleep to on Netflix, and it’s literally impossible to sleep to things on Prime (so I barely watch anything there; it’s not worth falling asleep to something I like, since I might be punished for it), so I’ve started putting on YouTube in the evenings since it won’t wake me with silence at...

monsterpiece42,

Absolutely my choice as well. In addition to being all the things that OP has asked for, he’s also a phenomenal player and his dedication to highly precise play is insane.

My wife and I have been through all of his Rimworld series, and watch it as we would a TV show when a new episode drops. We just got done watching biotech episode 5!

monsterpiece42,

Sounds like thinking is not something that he’s interested in doing.

monsterpiece42,

I have seen this exact thing happen to a friend in a past social circle. It was a hoot to witness.

monsterpiece42,

Absolutely enthusiast grade is higher. Business grade is just enough to do the job.

Bonus round:

Military grade is from the lowest bidder.

Industrial grade is durable with absolutely no extras (and also expensive).

Laboratory grade is usually extremely high end, high cost, and precise.

monsterpiece42,

Ok, I’m not saying you need to agree with the principle, but the grammar clearly states that the citizens get guns because the government has a military (which is the well-regulated militia).

Again, not starting a debate on if that’s good or bad, just grammar.

Looking to dip my toes into Linux for the first time. I have a 2016 Intel MacBook Pro with pretty solid specs collecting dust right now that I think I’m going to use. Research so far has indicated to me that the two best options for me are likely Mint or Elementary OS. Does anyone have any insight? Also open to other OS’s. I would consider myself decently tech savvy but I am not a programmer or anything. Comfortable dipping into the terminal when the need arises and all that.

@linux

monsterpiece42,

Mint and Pop OS are fantastic. Both have great support out of the box and lots of help out there on the Internet.

If you’re trying to game I would flatly say Pop OS. General computing, both are a tie for me. They just work (as far as Linux goes).

monsterpiece42,

Look at us all making choices that we can make!

monsterpiece42,

A small point but a legit one. I have two e-scooters and I like them a lot. One point on cost, the cheaper one was around $700 and is a phenomenal commuter. The other one is still a commuter, but with more powerful motors for my very hilly area. That one was around $1400. There are mid ranges bikes (in the total scale of bikes) that cost what both my scooters do together.

In this way, e-bikes and e-scooters should be seen very differently imo.

monsterpiece42,

What I’m saying is that $500 is enough to get you a brand new e-scooter that will go similar-to-bike speeds with no deal hunting, no mods, and a warranty. They’re also foldable, portable on to most public trans (inside) or into “the office”, and have virtually no maintenance.

No hate on bikes. I have a couple of very nice bikes (not as nice as that Marinoni to be fair). But let’s not act like you’re reliability getting places for <$500. And even if you do, not everyone can. Solutions need to be repeatable.

Edit: also to be fair, I am talking $500 USD. But if you go with a used scooter here you could probably do around $500 CAD equivalent.

monsterpiece42,

Well look at you, having all your code where it belongs.

monsterpiece42, (edited )

Man, come on. The ONLY time imperial makes some decent sense is temperature: for humans, 0 is really cold and 100 is really hot.

Edit: for anyone metric having a cow here, I am pro-metric. All I’m trying to say is that of all the hairbrained measurements in imperial, temperature is the least hairbrained.

monsterpiece42,

This was true for so many people but somehow I never saw a bug on PC Cyberpunk.

What's this design on my T450's back called? Googling "thinkpad t450 back" doesnt give any similar results. (thelemmy.club)

It looks like a typical thinkpad rubber back, but with the x1’s “carbon fiber” design cutting through it with a wide diagonal line. Google only gives standard rubber backs. Anyone have any idea what this version of the design is called?

monsterpiece42,

The lid on many modern Thinkpads is carbon fiber composite (non woven CF). And the palmrest area is made of magnesium.

I am 100% certain that this is true for at least my T14S Gen 1.

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

monsterpiece42,

You’re making a solid and valid point OP. The other guy is being a fuck. I wouldn’t pay him much mind but I do admire your willingness to explain your angle!

monsterpiece42,

Absolutely.

I have hooves (very wide, not long feet) and I have great luck with the Red Wing King Toe. They’re a hard toe that’s super wide. I started wearing them when I was a tradesman. I’m no longer a tradesman but I keep buying them because they’re sneaker-comfortable, at least on my feet.

monsterpiece42,

And windows just displays a %age. Linux of course depends on the distro

monsterpiece42,

Hopefully as my life goes on I will continue to make more money as I go.

I intend to use that money to own and maintain old ass cars until it’s literally illegal.

monsterpiece42,

Can you elaborate? I’m not familiar with the connection you’re referring to.

monsterpiece42,

I would love to be that guy in a sci-fi movie!

monsterpiece42,

I flatly concede that new cars are safer. Granted that, it’s not really that bad to maintain an old car if you take a known good platform purchased in cash and maintain it in a low rust area (which I am). I present two examples:

I have a 1991 Chevy S10 I bought in 2011. Other than fluid changes, I have put in brakes (twice), battery, starter, and a water pump in it since that time. Total cost, maybe $300? I bought the truck for $2500 and it gets around 25mpg.

I have a 2005 Scion xB. Purchased 2019, I have put only brakes into it (cost $150ish). Cost was $2800, and it gets over 30mpg almost always.

Separate to these, I have an e-scooter I use for commuting and small errands on nice days. I think the trio makes a great combo of practical stuff mover, people mover, and “just me” mover. I find it hard to believe this trio would be anything close to the carbon output of making two new equivalent cars and burning the same amount of fuel with them.

Thoughts?

monsterpiece42,

For sure, I’m familiar with that. You said it pussy whipped the industry. I don’t understand how they’re connected.

monsterpiece42,

You’re probably right about the mpg. The odometer has been broken for ages and I was estimating milage by adding up my commutes. I am at high altitude which does help a bit due to the lower wind resistance however.

6cyl anything from that era is almost always rough on gas haha. My dad also had an XJ – it’s actually what I learned to drive in. But yeah, terrible on gas.

I have a older mower too (not as old as you). But it’s creeping up on 10 years old. It’s a Troy-Bilt with the Briggs motor. Same though, first start of the season it’s sometimes two pulls, and then almost always just a single pull after that.

monsterpiece42,

Gotcha. I’d usually call that “honest” rather than “pussy whipped” so I think that’s what my disconnect was.

monsterpiece42,

Why hate? I get early on but it’s pretty good these days imo.

monsterpiece42,

I would nominate radio Pro Skater as a contender

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

monsterpiece42,

I grew up in the US northeast. The general lack of knowing how to dress warm everywhere else is pretty surprising, so I guess that’s the skill I’d pick.

monsterpiece42,

You’re going to answer like a dick, you should at least provide some insight.

monsterpiece42,

I work in a Win-centric PC shop. USB dongle (WiFi or Ethernet adapter) is by far the best way. Virtually all drivers download automatically with rare exceptions (specifically GPU drivers or weird import components).

monsterpiece42,

I stick to electrolyte water the most. I know sugar can help with absorbing electrolytes but I don’t like sugar much.

I like the BodyArmor water the best, followed by probably Smart Water and Essentia. They’re all fairly similar; I’m splitting hairs with taste. I’ll buy whatever is the cheapest or on a sale.

monsterpiece42,

I am a Yankee from a state with a Canadian border.

I started saying y’all because it’s ungendered!

monsterpiece42,

Technically just over 7 days but I’m saying it. I started a Bachelor’s in Cyber Security at a big university.

I’m the first in my family to ever seek higher education and my nephew (who lives with me) has already been asking questions about how he can go to college someday as well.

monsterpiece42,

Any older Thinkpad that’s about 5-7 years old on eBay. You can get units that were high end when they came out (normal speed now) for $200-300 all day.

I know specifically the P50’s have a thunderbolt port and you can get them with an i7 for around $250.
