Lighthearted, upbeat shows for adults?

Recently I’ve been catching up on tv and some of the more mature/adult shows, which I’ve been…Enjoying? Seems like the wrong word, but they’ve all generally been cynical or dark.

For reference, I’ve just finished Better Call Saul, which got me to finally get around to finishing Breaking Bad, and I’ve also been doing a rewatch of the anime Monster as it’s been years since I last watched it.

So basically back to back dark shows.

I’ve already watched The Good Place, which nails what I’m describing, but it’s a little blunt with the sweetness, while I’ve watched some of Bee and Puppycat which seems like it’s closer to a nice middleground of sweet and real.

What are some of your go-to shows for this kinda vibe?

themajesticdodo,

I haven’t seen a recommendation for Tacoma FD. Made by two of the Super Trooper crew. Far more toned down. Great cast. Awesome guest stars. Silly, fun and pretty wholesome.

A lot of great shows mentioned. To add to the list of upbeat the gf and I are working our way through Modern Family. The early seasons are pretty upbeat and lighthearted. I do wonder where they will end up in the later seasons as the families age.

Working Moms is something the gf watches and what I’ve seen had been pretty great and has some good fun shock value. I’m surprised where they go with some of the humour. Usually only animated shows get away with this.

I would add Archer but I haven’t finished the last couple of seasons so I’m not sure where it ends up on the fun and outrageous scale.

TheBig2023Meltdown,

Which part of modern family are you on?

Just into season 7.

themajesticdodo,

Archer jumped the shark a good few seasons back. Still capable of maintaining a standard but it never quite gets back to itself.

Edit: put some distance between bobs burgers and archer if you watch both. Alternating episodes between those two shows would be pretty confusing.

I’ve not really watched much of Bob’s Burgers but I think I saw a fan made cross over sometime back and it was weird for sure.

boomzilla,
  • Lost in Space
  • Firefly
  • The Orville
  • Star Trek: Next Generation
  • Cowboy Bebop (The Anime)
  • Disenchantment
  • Futurama
  • Arrested Development
  • The Office
I_Fart_Glitter,

I like to think that you were just too excited to share this information to use commas, or take a breath.

bpm,

“Miracle Workers” hasn’t been mentioned yet, it has a similar vibe, romantic comedy, some mild philosophy, very upbeat. Each season is a different storyline with (almost) the same cast, so if the first season doesn’t grab you try the next. The creator had an earlier show “Man Seeking Woman” as well, that’s fun too.

tronx4002,

It is cancelled now, but Last Man on Earth is such a great show.

themajesticdodo,

I found it really hard to get into. If I had something else I wanted to watch I wouldn’t have started season 2. By the time it ended I was hoping for just one more season.

WashedOver,

I’ve not made it through the first season. It is so cringe to me at this point. It does get better then?

themajesticdodo,

Halfway through the second season it turns away from it. It goes on longer than it should before he starts to develop as a character. It gets a little bit more comfortable after that with enough plot points to keep you engaged. At some point you might cry. Jason Sudekis is good.

plantedworld,

Eureka is kind of a disaster of the week pseudoscience problem show with a lot of heart. Don’t go looking for true scifi, but it’s so damn charming and the cast has exceptional chemistry.

lemmy_at_em,

I really loved Eureka, but the whole everyone thinks Carter is an idiot schtick makes it hard for me to rewatch.

friedligma,

Schitt’s Creek and Letterkenny deserve some spots here

Donjuanme,

I haven’t seen anyone say galavant, that’s a shame, somehow it got 2 seasons, and it’s brilliant the whole way through. If princess Bride had more back story arcs, fewer restrictions on how over the top they could make their characters, and was a musical, you’d have galavant.

Waker,

I definitely prefer their Top Gear content but I love seeing the Trio get a shout out in a thread like this

Sorting from 1 being the worse and 6 being the best in my opinion these are the shows that I found entertaining and recommend you giving a watch

    • 1 better call saul drama
    • 2 breaking bad drama
    • 3 still game comedy
    • 4 it’s always sunny comedy
    • 5 it crowd comedy
    • 6 father ted comedy

You may find it difficult to understand what the characters are saying in still game due to the cast being entirely Scottish I won’t spoil it for you just give it a watch

    deadsenator,

Still Game was wonderful! Just get the subs for it. I think it ran nine seasons, but each season is fresh and quite funny. In the end it’ll give you tears because your going to miss them badly.

Still Game is worth your time. Very funny and wholesome show.

Agreed I heavily enjoyed still game although I didn’t like the later seasons as much I felt like they were introducing more characters cuz they were running out of things to write about

    imapuppetlookaway,

British panel (game) shows like Would I Lie to You and 8 out or 10 Cats Does Countdown. The game element is just an excuse for funny, interesting people to crack jokes and have a good time.

    delitomatoes,

I’ll add Taskmaster on the list, available for free on Youtube

    Donjuanme,

Not a single person I wouldn’t recommend taskmaster to! This guy knows.

    disheveledWallaby,

QI with Stephen Fry was absolute gold! Sandi is great too. Anything with David Mitchell is awesome. I think my favorite is Johnny Vegas, that guy is a riot. Bill Baily, Phill Juputus,Sean Lock coming to think of it there wasn’t anyone on that show I didn’t love.

    soupyc,

‘Ghosts’ on CBS/Paramount+ is sweet, funny, lighthearted for the subject matter, and overall very enjoyable. I don’t think it will win any awards, but its a great alternative to all the dark and cynical stuff out there!

    Donjuanme,

Also try to catch the British iteration, after the first episode it’s an entirely different show!

    Whirling_Ashandarei,

Scrubs in addition to a bunch of the great suggestions in here.

    disheveledWallaby,

From around the same eara Chuck and Eureka are pretty fun and lighthearted as well.

    anarchost,

    It’s Always Sunny?

On the surface, it contains terrible people doing terrible things, but it’s both comedic and condemns those terrible things
