He did only like 5 videos in total or something though. The Jeff Bezos boat is bloody hilarious as well. This guy is absolutely unhinged.

viking,

Half of the channel you mention here were listed in the thread about youtubers who went to shit, which triggered this one here…

viking,

Tom Scott, Sorted Foods, Mr. Barry Lewis, Freakin’ Reviews, GeoWizard, Backyard Scientists, I Did A Thing, Stuff Made Here, Scott Stro-Solves.

Yeah he talks like he’s on coke now. Borderline unwatchable. I bet you can reduce the playback speed by 50% and it would de-stress the whole experience.

Mark Rober.

He got louder, flashier, less techy and more talky and is doing a gazillion reruns of the same general idea over and over. Can’t really enjoy it anymore.

I was with you in the first paragraph.

In the second I wanted to differentiate between the original trilogy and whatever came next.

In the third one, my opinion is directly opposite.

Is there any specific use case for the app that you don’t get with the mobile website?

I’ve figured out that my bank’s app is basically a wrapper for the mobile website, the only thing they added being fingerprint login.

Instantly deleted the app and use the website now, one less thing that can potentially spy on me.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

That has been on the roadmap from the very beginning though, and they will allegedly start production in 2024.

Which one? I’m using geometric weather, and there is a FOSS clone/adaptation called breezy weather that I’d love to use but unfortunately there’s an unfixable bug, so I’m more than happy to look for alternatives.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Just had a look, seems to be US only.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Just had a look, any idea specific reason why there is a light grey line on top? That completely obscures my title bar.

Else I like the simplicity! Would be nice to have wind speeds in km/h as well.

And if you are looking for features to implement, having a persistent task bar icon that shows the current temperature is my personal must-have.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Sure, here you go: imgur.com/a/pkAwdqy

In the screenshot my title bar is still vaguely visible, on screen with a higher brightness setting it’s next to invisible. You can actually barely make out the temperate icon from geometric weather there.

I’m using a OnePlus 10 pro on Android 12, with Nova Launcher installed, in case that makes a difference.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Awesome, thanks a lot! I’ll wait for the update then, not currently available here. Guess it’s a staged rollout.

German

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Name: Hans Wurst Geburtsort: Wurstdorf

Herzlichen Dank.

Gruß, Unterschrift

Help me choose my mobile browser

As per title, Help me choose a browser for android I have non rooted device. After all the researches I found best for me would be 1: Mull but with Some way for knowing which site have saved any data on my device (Maybe by extension or some defined page like about:config type) But as per my research I do not found any such...

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Fennec (Firefox based), with Ghostery and uBlock origin installed.

You’ll have to set add-ons up as a private collection for them to work, but it’s easy as pie.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Interesting, I’ll look deeper into that. They have an adblocking engine as well though and catch a few random ones uBlock doesn’t, so I’m not totally convinced they are fully redundant.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yes, and I do, and yet there are still some escapees. Might be a fringe case as I live in Asia, but at least for me it serves a purpose.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

You can delete cookies and data on a per-site basis, and advanced tracking protection prevents any nefarious websites from exploiting your browser. That’s all I care for.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Right, I’ll look into that. Thanks!

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

No, I’m talking about Firefox. Fennec, that is, but the key functions are all the same.

It’s not in the settings however, you need to open the site in question and press the lock icon in the address bar next to the URL, the context menu there allows to delete cookies and site specific data.

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Following the pro-Mull comments here I’ve given it a try for a solid 48h, and just reverted back to Fennec. Mull is simply restricting the user experience too much, and I’m not willing to make the sacrifice.

My biggest annoyances:

  1. Websites don’t get information about dark mode from my device and revert back to light mode by default.
  2. Websites don’t get information about the system time on my phone and deliver content based on GMT+0.
  3. Some websites get wrong (or none?) information about the screen resolution and are unusable.

I’m aware that those details are suppressed to avoid fingerprinting, and while I believe that the intention is good, it makes using my phone more cumbersome, and that’s not something I’m willing to do. So my choices at this point are basically to keep using Mull and deactivate the advanced fingerprinting protection, or use Fennec as before.

You mean legally when I’m allowed/entitled to? All the time. I max out my benefits.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Why? If I’m allowed, I consider it part of my salary, and would be stupid not to cash it in.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It’s exclusively to remove paper flavor. There are microparticles stuck to the filters you don’t want in your drink.

Channeling on the other hand happens when you have irregular grind size and distribution in your grounds. Stirring them pre-pour and pouring gently in consistent motions helps with that, as does a proper blooming phase. Wetting the paper has no effect there.

Without knowing where you live (at least the country…) your guess is as good as mine.

Where I’m from I can drop old batteries off at every electronics retailer and they have to recycle/dispose of them.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/Electronics/eRecycle/

That should list all nearby recycling centers. They don’t mention batteries specifically, but this sub-page does and it links there, so I’m assuming batteries are considered part of the e-waste: calrecycle.ca.gov/epr/batteries/

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yes, that’s how I learned it in driving school as well. You can decelerate using the brake only, but once your speed drops below ~25 kmh / ~15 mph you should use the clutch simultaneously to not kill the engine. And it’s not harmful to use the clutch already on higher speeds since all it does is disconnect the gears - though leaving it engaged while you are not using gas means that the load on the gearbox helps to decelerate a bit faster.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It’s probably made-up garbage. If they knew my ad-blocker had actually blocked a friend, I’m sure they would have found a way not to get anything blocked.

Or alternatively they are now displaying some friend’s posts on the same channel normally reserved for ad networks so they are indistinguishable via software? But then it should be way more than one, unless this is some early A/B testing crap.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It sure might be, but the one friend who got blocked is just casually posting stuff from his personal life, nothing spammy going on there. Either facebook is screwing with me, or they are playing out some friend’s posts in the ad-network stream so you are actually losing some genuine content. That would be evil (and totally something Meta would do), but I really couldn’t care less.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah all my actual friends are messaging me elsewhere, facebook is more like a picture dump for old people. I only use it occasionally for joining various expat groups since I move countries frequently for my job, and they are rather resourceful.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yes same for me, whatsapp is pretty much the only “genuine” communication channel. I only keep a presence on facebook since I have to move countries frequently for work, and the “expats in $city” groups are quite helpful to find people, and then move the discussions off-platform :-)

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Definitely. Ads are eye cancer at best, and infiltration channels for malware at worst. Compromised ad networks pumping out executable code via javascript (or back in the days, Flash) are still a major source of trojan infections.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Ublock Origin and Ghostery (more for tracker blocking than ads, but it does both).

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

That’s what I’m using the ghostery browser addon for. They are pretty effective with external tracker removals.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I log in once a week since I’m in a few useful groups, but haven’t posted in a solid decade.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

uBlock origin works, but you must disable all other blockers or browser plugins doing something with youtube, as they might interfere with the adblocking capability.

For the fire stick, simply install smarttubenext. Adfree and with sponsorblock included.

What people fail to see is that this is the largest date the API can store, not a magical cutoff date in the distant future.

You could create a date today and send it to the API, and it could potentially crash it, or create a buffer overrun.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Won’t take long, I’m sure. The mobile features are usually following the desktop implementation closely, for anything but the addon functionality.
