stoy,

I am allways concerned about off shore power, it gives a huge opening to a foreign actor to stealthily attack them under water…

But as long as they wont replace existing powerplants and just export the surplus, I am fine with it.

Me and dad saw Oppenheimer in the cinema, the sound was almost unbearable at times…

I remember subscribing to his channel 20 years ago.

stoy,

Unreal Tournament 2004, with few players it turns its normal frantic and fast paced gameplay into a suspensfull slower experience which is awesome.

I think you can get it on the internet archive as it stopped being sold on gog and steam this spring.

OpenRA - Do you remember the old classic series Command & Conquer ?

OpenRA takes the old original game, updates the controls to modern RTS controls, add new ai to play against, add support for modern resolutions and adds a good internet multiplayer system, all of this for free!

OpenRA can be downloaded att openra.net

[Long post] Do more or fewer communities lead to increased engagement?

As I watch The Internet look like it’s starting to adopt a new phase (let’s call it federation writ large), I’m watching for signs of both success and struggle. I have some strong opinions of features and functionality lacking in the current suite of UIs that might help adoption, but thing I’ve been thinking about more...

stoy,

The number of communities doesn’t matter if the UX is too complicated.

Look at Reddit, it has an increadible number of communities and users, yet for the user it is fairly simple to navigate, you can easily link communities by prefixing /r/ to the community name in a reddit post.

Lemmy communities on the other hand use a far more complex link structure: !asklemmy

That is a huge barrier of entry for normal users, then we have user links:

Reddit: /u/example_user

Lemmy: @example_user

This is just plain annoying to most non technical users, and will push them away.

Lemmy is just teetering on the edge of being too hard to use, for technical users it can be hard to learn, but for normal users, it can be too much to even look at the communities, let alone, creating a new user.

stoy,

That is clearly a ball of some sort, possible fairly heavy as she uses two hands to hold it in place.

YouTube screwing itself with adblockers again

I use Firefox and uBlock Origin. Not sure what kind of experience anyone else is having with YouTube, but recently my home page has been empty because I “don’t have watch history turned on”. Okay, fine. I won’t be able to browse suggested videos, and I’ll spend less time on their platform....

stoy,

I have a powershell script with the settings I want to use for yt-dlp, open VSCode, paste the URL in the variable and click run, and it just goes.

So far I have yet to find a reason to get multiple videos, but that just needs a foreach-object loop and a quick array to get that working.

Won’t the the most efficient solution, but it’ll be fine.

stoy,

There are plenty of alternatives to the Kindle, several years ago I used the Kobo Glo, worked fine with PDFs, though I remeber having to hack it’s local database to make it work without an account.

stoy,

Dankpods needs to see this.

stoy,

~20min after the post went up, OP has posted no thoughts…

So I’ll put in my own…

When I run Linux on a laptop, I tend to run Fluxbox, it uses a tiny ammount of screen real estate and is flexible snd nice to work with.

I am a bit sad that fluxbox won’t be updated to wayland (at least not when I checked the last time), and I hope that waybox will be a good replacement.

stoy,

I have only owned one car, my current 2021 Seat Leon hatchback PHEV.

Out of all the cars I have driven (four, a 2014 VW Golf, a 2020 VW Golf, a 2016 Volvo V90 PHEV and my Seat) the Seat is my favourite.

The Golf’s I’ve driven were either loaned from my driving school or used at my first driving test and my dad has the Volvo, but I have the Seat.

I really like the styling of my Seat, it looks cool, and a bit agressive without being overbaering.

The performance is good enough for me, if a bit lacking in power above 100kmh, it is very quick between 10 and 50, launches are fun with the electrical system engaged.

As a first car, it is fantastic, though I am 35 and bought it this year.

stoy,

The P1800 is a beautiful car, completely different from normal Volvos of the time.

stoy,

Hehe, Seat is actually winding down, the brand will cease to exist in a a few years.

But as it is a WAG brand I am not worried about spares or servicing.

Cupra, Seat’s racing division is the new Seat brand, it is a bit too much of a lifestyle brand, with an edgy logo, I like it when it had a copper colored Seat logo as it’s logo, that was cool.

But eh, when I need a new car in many years hopefully, I will look at Cupras range.

The Seat Leon is basically just a Golf in a new design.

stoy,

Walkable cities are fantastic, I would never commute to my office with my car, I live in the suburbs and take the bus and metro to the office, it is awesome, I lived alone for nine years without needing a car, to be frank, I don’t need a car in my day to day life.

But I have missed a lot of opportunities by not having a car for the weekends/vacations.

Opportunities to get new furniture, opportunities to find a castle ruin, opportunities to connect with friends easier, opportunities to go places where I would not have been able to in a resonable timeframe using just public transport and walking.

It might be selfish, I don’t deny that, but it has done wonders for my mental health.

I got a car that can fit five, that runs on electricity for most tasks, it was used, so no new car was produced specificly for me.

I believe it was the least bad car I could have gotten

stoy,

I have thought about only keeping my car for a few years so I get more experience and then selling it and getting on the app leasing deal, but so far that is not on the horizon for me, but who knows…

stoy,

That’s fair if a bit harsh…

stoy,

That’s how I lived for 9 years while living alone in the suburbs and working in the city, it is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

I still pride myself on not needing a car for my commute to/from work, and I would never take my car into the city unless it was critical, I have done it a few times to learn and get experience, but it is just annoying.

For me, I use my car for recreation, I get in and drive out in the country to intresting places where I take photos of cool stuff, places that would be a nightmare to visit by public transport or walking/biking.

Who knows, in a few years I might sell my car and get in on the app leasing deal, but for now as I only got my license last year at 35, I use my own car to get experience and be a better driver, I will reevaluate the value of owning a car as time passes.

stoy,

I can relate, before I got my own car, I prided myself on not needing it.

But having a car has enabled me to do way more than before, I am a hobby photographer, and being able to get to the airport for some planespotting in 40 min is way, way better than needing 2h with public transport.

stoy,

I kinda like the minivan concept, and I love the ID.Buzz design, it’s funky!

My current Leon only has the standard Seat sound system but it is fine for me, even when listening to good music it works very well, for podcasts it is excellent.

stoy,

Dad allways had SAABs when I grew up, started with a 9000i -> 9000CSE -> 95 estate -> 95 estate Aero -> 95 estate BioPower

I have allways loved the orange/green color scheme of the dials in the old 9000, also the geneal shape of the dash in the 95 is lovely.

stoy, (edited )

I don’t know if it still works, but VLC and libdvdcss used to work fine

stoy,

What hurts Lemmy more are the communities that are repost bot communities.

I get the need for the repost bots during the starts of the migration of Reddit users to Lemmy, but these days they just make it hard to be seen in some communities, they prevent new original content to develop in those communities as no one will want to post just to have their post drowned out by content that doesn’t even come from this place.

I need to record over some Hi8 tapes; 5 tapes, ~2½ hours each. I can record audio and video directly. What should I put on there? (kbin.social)

I'm getting rid of an old Hi8 camcorder and figured I'd throw in the tapes with it, but I want to wipe the contents of the tapes before I do. I don't have a huge magnet or anything I can use to quickly erase the tapes, so the only option is to record over them using the camcorder. Instead of being boring and just muting it and...

stoy,

Dismantle the tapes and cut the tape in peices?

stoy,

To make it unreadable to the wast, wast majority of people.

I thought that was the end goal.

stoy,

Alright, then I misunderstood, it was early in the morning (:

How often do you use "AI" to reply to your messages, if at all?

The recent chat bot advances have pretty much changed my life. I used to get anxiety by receiving mails and IMs, sometimes even from friends. I lost friendships over not replying. My main issue being that I am sometimes get completely stuck in a loop of how to formulate things in the best way to the point of just abandoning the...

stoy,

In Swedish it would be called “kraftledningsgata”, directly translated to English that means “powerline street”, but I already saw a better name for it in the comments “utility corridoor”

stoy,

I often take a complete lap around a roundabout if I have people driving too close behind me, they clearly are in a rush to their accident, they don’t want to be behind me, I don’t want them behind me, one lap of a roundabout solves the issue to our mutual satisfaction.

stoy,

I am thinking about getting dad an Airspy stick and a Raspberry pi, we both love Flightradar24, and he has spoken about setting up a node in the network for them.

stoy,

If you do get that and start submitting data to Flightradar24, you’ll get a free top level account, at least that was true when I checked last time.

Just remember that you need an antenna as well…

stoy,

Sorry for being a bit of a dick, I think you mean that the file “is 3.8MB”.

“mb” would mean millibit, 3.8millibit is an impossibly small file size, and would never exist practically (though I an sure that with some clever maths a zip bomb could be designed so that one bit of data could be compressed into 3.8millibits)

MB is the proper shorthand for MegaByte, a decent file size for a high quallity pucture, depending on the format and compression.

Unless we analyze the image, and determine the image format and compression settings we have no idea of if 3.8MB is a resonable size of the file or not, and the mods have hidden a rar file in the picture file, it is highly improbable that would be the case however.

Sorry for being a dick.

stoy,

This is all fair, I can’t say it wont happen again ever, but I usually am not this kind of a dick.

stoy,

Eh, you should not have had to deal with that, I was just annoyed about other stuff and should have ignored the post instead of being a dick.

I am sorry for my bad post.

stoy,

The oppinion of Tesla was way different back then, the cult of Musk has lost a lot of influence since then.

stoy,

Yes, initially, then I will enable them as I need them, not as the app wants them.

I bought an app to get heads up of northern lights, at first I disabled notifications, but that made the app pointless, so I have allowed some notifications.

Other than that, I only have notifications on my message app.

stoy,

We did an experiment in an earlier thread here, I had an unmonetized test video on youtube and we used that to get some stats over one day.

This is my report:

lemmy.zip/comment/5089778

Now, since I have zero monetized videos on my account, I am probably missing some stats, but this is what I found, others in the thread did show some monetization stats if that is what you are looking for.

stoy,

You are most welcome, it was a fun experiment, and I am glad to have been part of it.

stoy, (edited )

My head would fuse with my chest of drawers, the rest of my body would fall limply to the floor about 70cm below, if my head fusing with my furniture didn’t kill me, then the fall could break my neck, it would absoluetely make the chest of drawers fall over me which absolutely could crush my neck.

So, please do not do this when I am in bed.

stoy,

Back in 2014, I got my own apartment, and realized that I am now responsible, not only for feeding myself, but also keeping a roof over my head, I need insurance and need to pay for utilities.

I remeber that I cried a bit when my parents left after having helped me move, then I walked to the shops and bought a steak and made dinner…

stoy,

Oh, I am lazy, but decent cook.

Lemon chicken cooked in a covered ceramic pot in the oven is peak lazy cooking, total time 2,5 hours, total time actively doing stuff in the kitchen, 30 min, taste, excellent.

stoy,

Well, those 30 min of work gets you not only a cooked lemon chicken, but an excellent sauce and fresh rice.

Oh, and all the food can feed four people.

stoy,

That sounds more like reheating rather than cooking, but we probably have different standards

stoy,

Economics is just a shit prize, it devalues the rest of the prizes, and should never been allowed to be awarded among the others.

The litterature prize started as a good idea, but these days it has lost a lot of presteige, just looks back at when Bob Dylan was forced to get the prize.

He didn’t want the prize, but the organizers still awarded him the prize, looking like a weirdly obsessive fan club.
