Knokelmaat's Top 10 Patient Games of the Year 2023

Outer Wilds. I played this game through PS Plus, and it is the best game I have ever played in my life. The gameplay, the puzzles, the music (!!!), the characters, the story, the ending. Just a masterpiece. I’m not even sure if it was this year or last year that I finished it, but the soundtrack was number 4 in my Spotify...

knokelmaat,

That android mother face is quite a visual!

knokelmaat,

Holy shit I didn’t know that was one of the anouncements! Pony Island was so good, perfect length and amazingly immersive story wise. Inscription I really liked too but somehow I fell off after a few hours, still gathering dust on my PS5.

knokelmaat,

Last Sentinel had a really cool visual style (the half faced android mother thing got my attention).

Kojima’s scary shenanigans looked interesting too :)

knokelmaat,

I think he makes the mistake of assuming that every person has a similar life experience to his own. I’ve read his biography, and apparently he was extremely intelligent and acted like an adult from a very young age. It could be that he hated being seen as a child and saw himself as a fully functional adult in a transitioning body.

In everything he says and does there is an extreme single-mindedness: his extremely strict free software and privacy related ideas show this. I think he applies a similar single-mindedness to a clearly nuanced situation, namely that of conscent. The nuance of power dynamics and coercion probably don’t play a role in his experience and therefore he ignores it. This results in the very wrong and dangerous opinions stated in the article.

I am not saying this to excuse any of his opinions, this is just my interpretation of where it might come from. It’s sad that the people around him are seemingly unable to educate him on these topics, but I believe it might be the same stubbornness that made him the proponent of the Free Software movement that is causing him to not mentally grow on this specific topic. It’s a truly unfortunate situation, but one that should not be ignored and people who oppose him because of these opinions are right to do so.

knokelmaat,

I find 10$ a very decent value, far from greedy to be honest. This is not the same as TLOU part 1 where you had to pay full price even if you already had a previous version.

knokelmaat,

You are still able to play the PS4 version on your PS5, so no you’re not paying 10 dollars for a game you already own.

You’re paying 10 dollars for Dualsense rumble support, extra roguelike mode and lots of other PS5 specific updates like support for fast loading.

knokelmaat,

I’m glad you bring up the power imbalance. The “both sides have been doing horrible stuff” only works if both sides have equal footing, which they clearly do not. This does not negate the crimes commited by Hamas, but extremism doesn’t come from nowhere and Israël has a responsibility in that.

knokelmaat,

The early Arkham games are quite unique and important games I feel.

knokelmaat,

I often find it a bit awkward when lawmakers join in on protests, like isn’t a protest to make our voices heard by them in the first place?

Although of course there is only so much you can do, even as a prime minister, so it might still be important for her that she wants to see it better.

knokelmaat,

I think he just really loves this game? The game is at 87 open critic rating, overwhelmingly positive (96) on Steam. This game is just genuinely adored by a lot of people.

knokelmaat,

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the evil within and it’s sequel, looking forward to trying it out!

knokelmaat,

Hey,

I am an electrical engineer, but a natural at coding so after I got my degree I was quickly pushed by my employer towards more programming related projects. I was pretty good at it, but I suffered from similar issues as you. The race seems never ending and there’s always a new thing to know just around the corner, with seemingly no space or time to learn stuff in depth or create a decent and understandable architecture and documentation. I also really missed the social and emotional aspect, which seemingly is not how all people function: a lot of my colleagues were perfectly content to spend 8 hours a day racing through libraries and editors and calling it a day. In the end I got a pretty severe depression and anxiety (those issues were already underlying but the work triggered them again). It took a long time to start recovering again, but now I feel OK most days and I have beautiful moments and value in life. After a period of therapy I started volunteering as a bike repairman parttime (as this is the only workload I could handle) and that was really nice. Now I actually started studying again to become a librarian or work in another function for public information and I feel that it suits me well at the moment. No one can tell what the future will bring, the librarian thing might work out or it might not, but there is always something new to do. Don’t spend your life trying to be someone you’re not. Don’t try to do what you’d love to be, try to love what you are.

This got a bit serious, but this seems like a safe space to do so :).

knokelmaat,

Demon’s Souls is the first souls game that I have ever completed, I think it is an astounding part of the ps5 catalogue. Also, currently going through Ghost of Tsushima PS5 edition and at 4k60 that game is incredible.

Those are 2 experiences that I loved that are only available on PS5.

knokelmaat,

PlayStation Access have some really nice let’s plays. The Skyrim Christmas special is amazing!

knokelmaat,

Amalur is 4k60 on PS5 where I played it. Is it that much worse one other platforms?

knokelmaat,

Play pass is a fantastic idea, made me discover a lot of awesome small little experiences

knokelmaat,

Her by Spike Jonze.

Visually stunning, perfect tone and setting. Awesome people. A heartfelt romantic movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson doing a spectacular job.

knokelmaat,

I think there is a difference in virtually shooting down star wars stormtroopers compared to Vietnamese countrymen.

One is based in a fictional universe, the other is based in a real life war. Even if the story itself is fictional the war that is being depicted is very much a real thing that happened.

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

knokelmaat,

Well, not really as I’m European and have no connection to any side in the Vietnam war.

I just feel that if your game is based on real life wars than you should be very careful to give a nuanced view of the situation. Even allowing a campaign on both sides would be interesting if executed well.

knokelmaat,

Even if you know it’s fiction you get the feeling that you are on the “good” side, which may colour your perception on the US military interventions.

knokelmaat,

Why are you giving an example that is not based on a real war or context?

Of course this doesn’t influence your opinion of real life as the subject doesn’t refer to real life (as you so clearly describe with the “giant crime fighting amphibious creatures”).

knokelmaat,

Are you saying that fiction has no influence on how we view the world?

I’m sorry, but that is just wrong. Using fictional works as propaganda is a thing, so it most certainly has an effect on the public.

Other research papers after a quick search, these indicate influence between fiction and beliefs/opinions of the consumers:

knokelmaat,

I knew about this. As a Belgian though, I don’t believe we had a lot of presence there.

Sadly, we have done our share of horrible stuff on foreign soil (but we haven’t made any videogames about it)

knokelmaat,

Thanks, this message means a lot to me!

knokelmaat,

Ok let me spell it out:

I know this is a videogame.

I know the difference between games and reality.

I do however know that people get indirectly influenced by the media they consume. (See my other comment for scientific sources on this).

Playing violent games does not make you violent.

It’s the tone that matters. The Last of Us is very violent but never makes it feel cool. Uncharted is very over the top and enemies are just nameless, raceless grunts. The story in GTA often makes it clear how fucked up the crime world is.

That is my issue with the Vietnam scene I was playing earlier. This was not like Uncharted based in a completely fictional conflict. This was based in a real war that the US participated in, killing real people, and you’re just there being the awesome hero killing locals by the dozens.

I know this will not change your mind.

This is my last attempt at being reasonable and trying to understand each other.

I know you will answer with some short personal remark or minimize all the points I have made instead of having an actual conversation.

I hope you prove me wrong, otherwise this will be my last response to you.

knokelmaat,

I totally agree. What we perceive around us is the reality we are trying to understand. A simulation is by definition a copy or simplified version of something occuring in reality. Describing our reality as a simulation is just meaningless, as it just somehow moves the definition of reality as “something above or beyond what we can experience”. That is not useful and makes me think of flying spaghetti monster stuff.

knokelmaat,

Both games look interesting, thanks for sharing!

knokelmaat,

Just look at issues in software you use.

Start with a simple project. Clone the code and try to build it (this is already a very big step in software development, so don’t be angry with yourself if it takes a while). Poke around in the code, change some stuff, get a feel for the architecture. Then see if there is an issue that you could help with. Ask questions on the projects communication channel(s). Most developers will be kind if you ask for help or advice.

Good luck! 🤞

knokelmaat,

Can’t a phone just be a phone? For the love of god. Do we need to listen to music on everything? - some person 10 years ago

A phone is just a portable computer. Just like people not wanting both a console and a PC in their homes, I can understand wanting to use your phone as a Nintendo Switch alternative for portable gaming. Paired with a decent input device it could solve that craving without the need for both a phone and a separate portable game console in your pocket. I honestly think a decent implementation of this would be amazing (current phone gaming market is too focused on gacha mechanics and timers)

knokelmaat,

The Precession To Calvery was hilarious from beginning to end.

I also love the humor in Portal 1 and 2.

Frog detective is also super cute and funny.

knokelmaat,

If you like classic FF sea of stars might be up your alley. I’ve only played the beginning, but it feels really nice and the critical response has been amazing.

knokelmaat,

PS5 can’t even consistently give 4k60 on all titles. A tablet with a way lower power draw will not be able to do this for but a bare minimum of titles.

knokelmaat,

For me it was amazing. I felt that the 2.5 D was the best implementation of this type of mechanic I had ever seen. The way stuff from behind the environment comes into the 2D plain and interacts with the player is awesome. Extremely polished, very well animated, amazing visual tone, great atmosphere. Great semi scripted sequences, fantastic setpieces and (for me) an incredible ending (though disturbing).

knokelmaat,

TIL it has an alternative ending. I’ll look it up later!

knokelmaat,

I honestly preferred A Way Out. Way more jank and less polished, but just the perfect mix of humor, drama, sillyness and emotions. And so many epic and memorable scenes.

Jitsi, the open-source video conferencing platform, now requires a Google, Microsoft, or Facebook account for their online service (jitsi.org)

While Jitsi is open-source, most people use the platform they provide, meet.jit.si, for immediate conference calls. They have now introduced a “Know Your Customer” policy and require at least one of the attendees to log in with a Facebook, Github (Microsoft), or Google account....

knokelmaat,

But won’t those criminals always find another way of communicating? If you’re doing something illegal, it’s worth it to you to go through some hoops to have safe and private communication. All this does is remove that option from less tech literate people.

knokelmaat,

Linux users (me included) are only a few percents of all PC users. I don’t think they did it for us as a market, more to have an alternative to windows if they start closing down more (started with Windows 8 I believe). First try they fumbled a bit with the Steam Machines (Stream OS and proton weren’t there yet and the prices were not really competitive) and now nailed it with the Steam Deck. I do love that they seem to care about openness to some degree!

knokelmaat,

I got this as part of a double buy together with Bionicle. I was a huge Bionicle nerd but ended up playing way more of this game. The combination of RTS and decreased focus on combat worked really well for me.

I am going to play the hell out of this once I get home.

knokelmaat,

I agree, but even further: those articles should be open to begin with :)

knokelmaat,

Thank you for your very thorough response.

My response was about the “that no one ever complained about” part of your initial comment. That is simply untrue, plenty of people have complained about it since the game was released.

I am also in favor of keeping the original and giving content warnings and relevant info or commentary, as this is the best way to integrate our sometimes troubled past in our future vision.

But I also feel that the word censorship is used very strongly here. The old metal gear solid games are in no way being “undone” or “hidden” by the existence of a new version. I feel that a CRT and a physical controller are also part of the original, is this then also being censored in the new version? Even if it is just a remaster, some decisions will be made to adapt it technically to modern systems, I don’t see why doing the same in terms of some painfully dated content is considered censorship instead of just a new version. Just reducing some of the blatant boob gazing doesn’t retroactively destroy the original Snake Eater in my opinion. But I guess it depends on what you see as a rerelease vs remaster vs remake. If you expect to have the exact original experience that I understand that you don’t want anything changed, but then I also think you’re best of playing the original.
