Apple has begun piloting an App Store feature called contingent pricing that will let developers offer cheaper subscriptions to customers based on the other subscriptions they already hold. The company says it's meant to help developers "attract and retain subscribers."
hmm kinda like offering promo pricing for internet/cable/streaming but the added “based off other subscriptions” seems new. I do wish prices were fixed to some sort of stable underlying value (materials+labour+transport+some reasonable profit margin).

Judge to Epic: So if google extended the same deal to you would you be down?
Epic: No, it’s anticompetitive
Judge: But if you’re getting the same deal deal as spotify it’s fair…
Epic: No, it’s anticompetitive
I agree it’s a bizarre take—they’re a judge, not a settlement lawyer! You’d think a judge’s training would be to consider the general implications of the problem being brought to them given that that’s kinda their job.
You can block instances on Kbin— go to https://kbin.social/d/lemmy.ml then click the hamburger menu in the upper left and you can block it just like you can a magazine.
To check which ones you’ve blocked you click your name in the upper right > settings > blocked > domains.
You can also filter out specific words in settings (though I haven’t tried this out).
Find a dive bar and go at the same time/times every week for at least 8 visits. You’ll know it’s a dive bar if it smells like the beer has soaked into the walls and floors and someone offers you a bump of coke in a bathroom that’s too small for two people. You will absolutely make friends but they might not be the best influences on your life. They’ll be really loyal and probably kinda funny though.

They say rich tech people fled to the suburbs during the pandemic so maybe this is how the vacuum fills? Though rents are going up in the city too and housing is pretty tight so maybe no vacuum anywhere:( Need more.
Grad students are definitely in a precarious position in reference to their advisors and to ‘notable’ profs working in their area. Working abroad at the pre-PhD stage (especially somewhere where you don’t know the language) sounds like it compounds the issues. I think home institutions need to do a better job preparing and then protecting their students in this respect including creating avenues for reporting and legal protection.

Democracy remains popular across the world, but faced with a global array of challenges from inequality to the climate crisis, young people are far less likely than their elders to believe it can deliver on what concerns them....
Democracy works really well when everyone in the voting group respects and values each-others’ opinions. I think this is probably only achievable in quite small groups.
Once it gets too big when a decision that you don’t like comes down the pipeline it doesn’t much matter to you whether a dictator proclaimed it or a bunch of faceless strangers voted for it.
If you live in a population that is large and non-homogeneous and are part of a minority 1 person 1 vote doesn’t feel great.

A packaging company investing in recycling research actually seems like quite a good sign to me. We’ve been trying to find ways to tie the responsibility for waste to packaging manufacturers for a long time.
I know a couple teachers (college level) that have caught several gpt papers over the summer. It’s a great cheating tool but as with all cheating in the past you still have to basically learn the material (at least for narrative papers) to proof gpt properly. It doesn’t get jargon right, it makes things up, it makes no attempt to adhere to reason when it’s making an argument.
Using translation tools is extra obvious—have a native speaker proof your paper if you attempt to use an AI translator on a paper for credit!!
Depends on how it’s used of course. Using it to help brainstorm phrasing is very useful. Asking it to write a paper and then editing and turning it in is no different than regular plagiarism imo. Bans will apply to the latter case and the former case should be undetectable.
Why YSK: In many places it can take years for a case to come to trial. Judges have to make a decision in such cases to determine whether an accused person should be jailed in the interim. I get France 24 in English via antenna and feel like the coverage is less sensationalized than US based sources. Maybe they have hot takes on French politics but I feel like I can keep up generally with world politics and avoid too much US saturation (though they still cover the US disproportionately).
I’m in my 30s so I should be used to this by now, but this shit is getting so stressful guys. I have no savings, my checking account is drained every month with rent, and if there’s ever a serious emergency I have no safety net, I’m legitimately fucked. I’m one unplanned expense away from absolute ruin. Those in the same...
Gotta either cut costs or increase pay. When I was living on $600 a month I roommated up, I applied for food assistance (SNAP), I bought a shitty craigslist car rather than picking up a car note, and I stuck to cheap cell carriers.
The last one is a place a lot of people could save a few dollars. T-mobile has a plan called t-mobile connect that is $15 a month with a few gigs of data. Works fine. Actually still use it now that I have a better job.
Ultimately you need to make more though. Think about all the skills you’ve gained in food service and retail and apply for another job you think you’d be good at. Imo anyone can do low level office work, for example. Sounds like you’re in the US, so keep an eye on Craigslist and Idealist.org (two engines where the jobs available are usually actually available unlike most search engines). Make it a habit of scrolling through and forming an opinion about what you would/wouldn’t like. Make a resume to fit (use chat gpt to help). Lie about things you’re pretty sure you could handle no problem but have no experience with. Once you get a better job do the whole thing again with the new experience to pad your resume.

I tend to think that dogmatic opinions are not changeable via online discourse. You cannot rationalize someone out of these positions—that kind of change has to take place in person with some semblance of real human care and connection involved. So, I try not to post with the intent of changing the mind of someone already committed to a dogmatic opinion. That said, I think it can still be fruitful to reply to these people occasionally in situations where I think other people reading the thread might benefit from the information. My dad has one particular troll on his Facebook friends list that he occasionally replies to just to give the troll’s wider network an alternative view to consider if they feel like it.

A very simple approximation of your voice as it’s heard if you’re facing someone when speaking would be using a unidirectional mic and recording yourself with the mic pointing the opposite direction as it normally would be (in other words— with the polarity reversed).
A slightly better approximation would be if you did the same thing but with two unidirectional mics pointed at slight angles (with the polarity still reversed) to simulate the placement of your ears.
Obviously the quality of the mic would factor in as well—you’d want mics with a flat frequency curve. To get even pickier you’d also want to use headphones or speakers with a flat frequency curve to listen to it. Once you had the recording you could even take impulse responses of certain rooms and process the audio to get an idea of how you sound to others in specific rooms!
