Hiya, pretty much the title. I have a dozen tapes I want to backup before age takes its toll. My basic idea after watching some videos online is to buy a hardware based upscaler that can interface with my vcr then throw that signal to a video capture card and record on my computer. I’ll go with name brands to avoid problems...
I just want to second the GV-USB2, it’s a nifty little device. I’ve used it to back up multiple home videos from VHS. The only thing is (at least this was the case when I bought my GV-USB2) all the instructions to activate it are in Chinese, you have to find a tutorial online if you can’t read Chinese. But there’s plenty of resources for you to take advantage of. Once you have it set up it’s essentially plug and play.
I had a discussion with a friend recently and during that discussion, one comment was “Fitted sheets are really both the best and the worst”, of course referencing them as awesome when put on a mattress and the worst when you’re trying to fold them....
The type of thing where someone in a general school chat promotes something like the nft collection they are minting and you want to passively aggresivelly respond
But then again smart phones weren’t a thing when I was in school so most of this kinda stuff seems odd to me. I’m with the other guy, I’m glad I never had to deal with any nonsense resembling this.
Jeff Buckley, no question. He released arguably the best album of the 90s (Grace) then went and fucking drowned. Only 30 years old. He coulda been one of the best to ever do it, but we’re left wondering.
So I was diagnosed with ADHD in my late thirties and before that I was a mess, job to job etc. then got lucky and worked for a company that afforded me the chance to study for my dream job without work pressure....
As someone who is the stupid party stoner friend to a big friend group of (mostly) tech bros, this list is pretty hilarious to read from the other side.
My comment was supposed to be kind of wink wink tongue in cheek in tone, I’m sure that didn’t come across.
I’m sorry for poking at fresh wounds. I lost my best friend too, many years ago. He was only 21, but there’s no such thing as “old enough” because life is too short. And there’s not enough time in this life to truly move on from something like that. There’s nothing else I can say, I just hope you’re doing well bud
Hii, I am trying to get into reading books but don’t know what to read. I like programming, tech, DIY stuff and science and would love to read about it....
The Tetris Effect by Dan Ackerman is a lot of fun, a pretty breezy read, and is fairly unbelievable for how true the story is. It involves (in varying amounts) programming, science, and DIY, mostly from an early-80s perspective (since a lot of it is about the development of the game), plus some corporate espionage and Soviet meddling.
Oh yeah, books first then the Netflix series afterwards. I think the show does a lot to expand the world of the books while not compromising its overall story and message. But you gotta read the books first.
The casting for the movie was incredible, they really set themselves up for a great trilogy and it’s a shame there was only one movie. The show is a magnificent achievement in tone and design but some of the casting choices left a bit to be desired. Off the top of my head I wasn’t too fond of Sir, Josephine, or Nero. But gotta give them some credit, Jacques and Esme in particular were perfect imo. I also loved Jerome but I have the biggest crush on Tony Hale so I’m probably coming at that one with a bias 😂
I agree that Meryl Streep was absolutely perfect, as she always is. I was speaking on the casting for the TV show. I didn’t hate her or anything I just thought she coulda been better
One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...
Look at how upset you are, at something that’s totally out of your control. So much anger, I could drown in it. Maybe try to focus on more positive emotions.
Die mad.
I wanna focus in on this statement. Do you say hurtful things like this because maybe deep down you’re afraid that you’ll die angry, angry at things that are completely out of your control? This is a very natural fear so don’t be afraid to admit it.
My ex told me people didn’t like me because I shared my thoughts too much, and I just got feedback from my boss about the same thing
Often times when this criticism is brought up it’s not the fact that you’re simply sharing your thoughts, but rather the thoughts themselves that you’re sharing. If your opinions are problematic then obviously people won’t want to hear them and won’t want to be around you. So if you don’t mind, could you share exactly what you said that made these people criticize you in this way?

Comments like this are exactly why people aren’t gonna wanna join Lemmy.
For reference: I’m one of the brain dead convenience seeking idiots you’re describing. Lemmy isn’t that hard to understand. What sucks about Lemmy is pretentious users like you treating it like something it isn’t when in reality it’s just another in a long list of average to middling message boards.
I don’t have the technical knowledge to understand lemmy’s decentralized federated nonsense and I’ve been using it just fine. You think you need to understand how something works to use it? Or do you think idiots like me are too scared to use something we don’t understand? Because I’m saying you’re wrong on both counts. And if you don’t like average idiots like me taking over your beloved platform then maybe you should just suck it up because I’m not going anywhere, and if this site continues to grow then pretty soon the average user will be a lot more like me than like you.
the vast VAST majority of average internet users are basically brain dead and want maximum convinence at any cost, including privacy and being treated right by the service as a user. They quite simply don’t care what happens as long as they can still get their garbage content drip fed to them without any work, learning, or inconvinece on their part.
If you don’t want to be called pretentious then maybe you shouldn’t spout pretentious nonsense like this
And I apologize for being an asshole in response. I would say that I hadn’t had my morning coffee yet but I’ve been trying to hold myself more accountable so instead I’ll blame my overall addiction to caffeine

Episodes (starring Matt LeBlanc as himself) is very much up this alley. It’s a show about two British TV writers adapting their big BBC hit for American TV. It’s also one of the more underrated shows out there, I don’t see a lot of people talking about it and frankly it’s excellent.
I don’t know if I ever came to terms with it, the thought of one day not existing has always brought me a level of deep comfort. Maybe try looking at it as a good thing instead of a bad thing.
The prequels killed SW for me and TFA/TLJ brought my love for the series back. And then TRoS killed it again.
It’s all relative, we all take different things out of these movies. I don’t think you’re wrong for enjoying the prequels but man I couldn’t disagree with you more that they’re good movies.
Coherence dinner party among friends gets stuck between alternate realities. One of those really good scripts that was shot on a microbudget. Weird movie, lots of fun to think about
Prospect a western film about a prospector going after a big score which also happens to be a sci fi movie set on an alien planet. Great film, very cool style and very underrated.

I’m not sure if you are looking for commiseration or advice
A little column A, a little column B. I made this post in a state of frustration after paying my rent this morning, every comment has been helpful but yours is simple and straightforward and could help more immediately with my situation. I think I’m gonna take your advice on this one, open up a new bank account strictly for budgeting my bills. Thanks, I really mean it.
That was a low moment for me. This summer has been really rough. I saw that post and it just broke something in my brain. I shouldn’t have commented on that thread, I’m not planning on deleting it but holy hell that’s embarrassing.
I work in retail. I’ve bounced around a few jobs the last few years, worked at a coffee shop, worked in a deli, worked at a grocery store. I’ve also had to move twice in the last three years which I’m still recovering from (both moves) financially. Out of all the gigs I’ve had, I truly loved making coffee for people, I’d have no problem doing that permanently if it paid the bills
