clif,

I’ve been considering this too. I don’t have much time at all to game but feel like maybe I’d do better with a portable than can stream to a TV.

I need to search up if they support all games or just those that have been ported. Surely it’s more than what has been ported to Linux…

But my mouse and keyboard, hmm

clif,

My neighbors have a turkey. Every time I walk through the kitchen I look out the window to see if she’s in our yard. If so, I run out to pet her.

Also, if I’m working outside she trots over to see what’s going on and, of course, I have to stop to pet her for 15 minutes.

She just walks up to me and sits down expecting pets.

clif, (edited )

I don’t know why it’s so fun, but my day gets better every time I get to pet a turkey.

Let’s see if this uploads… It’s a picture of her after 10 minutes of petshttps://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/71c07439-9f4f-44ed-987e-4973eceea813.jpeg

Edit: may look creepy, but she seems to be so comfortable that she’ll close her eyes and just chill. But I’m no turkey scientist. I imagine if she didn’t like it then she wouldn’t run up to me.

clif,

O wow, that’s awesome and I’ll have to try this. We’ve got a mandolin but both of us suck at playing it :D

clif,

“you’re really good at this and enjoy it so let’s get you into middle management where you won’t do it anymore and will hate your life”

Yep.

clif,

Ooowee, this is a close race. 10v11 at time of voting.

btw, thanks for doing this - it’s a little glimmer of fun in my morning between meetings : D

clif,

Those are some superb owls.

“There shall be no other date formats before ISO8601. Remember this format and keep it as the system default”

clif,

Pretty much every American I’ve ever met. Dates on drivers license, bank info, etc - all in MM/DD/YYYY … or even just MM/DD/YY

I regularly confuse people with YYYY-MM-DD

clif,

Fun fact, they short changed the horse:

Over a short period of time, they calculate, a horse can exert up to 14.9 horsepower.

clif,

Am old, also out of the loop and would like someone to explain it to me in “grampa” terms.

I only remember TFC, and that was a long time ago

clif,

I bailed to signal the day after Facebook bought whatsapp. No regrets and nothing lost :)

clif,

I’m running it on phone, tab (long ago), and desktop… What do you mean?

clif,

Ah, I thought that was by design.

clif,

I’m on vacation so I’ve been posting comments up a storm. Yet I’ve never seen…K …blue ball… Other letters? Before.

I’m just here to see Lemmy grow and I like what I see

clif,

Be careful about “boot camps”, and I say this as someone who teaches at one on the side (coding, not security). A lot of them are kind of like degree mills - pay money, get stamp, maybe worthwhile or maybe worthless.

If you go that route, do a lot of research. The biggest thing I’d look for is that the instructors work in the field full time and teach on the side (because they love sharing info and teaching the next generation). Hire rates for grads is also a good indicator… But take close note of where those hires are at and ask if it’s not published.

Any time I’ve come across these kind of programs where the boot camp instructors only job is teaching, the info is usually 10+ years dated and relatively useless past the absolute basics.

clif, (edited )

The relationship with the instructor is something I wanted to touch on but thought I’d maybe rambled too much already.

If it’s a good program, they WANT you to succeed and they want to give you every possible advantage. You can show up to class, do the bare minimum, and maybe pass. But going the extra bit and asking good, useful, questions will get you much further.

I’ve never met an instructor who cares that isn’t up for side discussions, private tutoring, and literally anything that helps the student squeeze as much info as possible before, during, and after the class. I have zero respect for anyone who teaches a class and refuses to do anything outside of the prescribed class hours… Makes me angry just thinking about it.

Edit: also if the instructor is working in the industry then they have a network that you can tap into… which is often more important

clif,

I think I’ll continue sticking to “dumb” cars… at least as much as they’re available.

The “smart” fad can go fuck a duck.

clif,

Ugh, I also have a special hatred for touch screen anything in cars.

Give me fucking knobs and buttons. I don’t want to have to stop looking at the road while I drive a 1000kg death machine because I can’t adjust the air con without looking.

clif,

I just want to say that you’re a MVP for seeding that much for that long. Lots of TBs up there - you’ve helped out a ton of people.

Thank you.

clif,

I’m a fan as well. I got into the Bluetti brand ecosystem and I’m pretty happy with it. Ecoflow is nice too. I wanted it to be self contained and (somewhat) portable which they do well… Way better than I could DIY without spending a lot more.

I think all reputable brands have switched to LiFePO4 batteries but if anyone is just getting into it - that’s the hotness. They last much longer than lion and are less 'splodey.

Pay close attention to the input limits. You can have 2kW of solar but it doesn’t matter if your device can only take 200W for charging :)

clif,

Hah, yeah, measuring the power usage of everything you need to power and doing the math is part of the fun.

I’m in the same boat - primarily a backup for the fridge/freezer in case of power outage. They’ve also come in handy for running AC power tools when you’re nowhere near an outlet. It made life a lot easier when doing work on a remote cabin that isn’t grid tied… Really makes you appreciate how nice it is to have electricity as a labor and time saver.

clif,

I had to check and make sure I didn’t type the comment above because it sounds exactly like me.

All UIs do things slightly differently, the CLI is always exactly the same… Everywhere. UI for non trivial conflict resolution? Definitely. For everything else, CLI.

And, I’m also reticent to use rebase unless I have to. Gimme that good ole FF :)

Moms for Liberty members call the cops on Florida librarians (popular.info)

Two members of Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group, have reported several Florida school librarians to law enforcement. They claimed they had evidence that librarians were distributing "pornography" to minors and requested that law enforcement officers be dispatched. This represents a serious escalation of the tactics...

never gonna stop me, never gonna stop.

Nice zombie reference

thegiddystitcher, to knitting
@thegiddystitcher@sunny.garden avatar

Given how much I enjoy knitting socks, encourage others to try knitting socks, and basically never stop talking about knitting socks, I thought you might all appreciate the project notes from my first ever socks.

@knitting

clif,

I feel this in my soul.

clif,

@meggied90 has perfect advice (the others are great too, but that’s the one that resonated with me).

Make sure you’re good with knitting (and purling) first. If you’ve never done it before DON’T start with a sock. Do something like a scarf - it’s much simpler, you can do it much faster, and you can still turn out something that you like and will use. If you want to go even more simple, pot holders / hot pads are “fast” and easy.

I may or may not have a pair of socks that I dived into with fingering weight in 2019 that’s still mocking me. Though I did do two more rows when I saw this post out of shame.

clif,

Are you using an off the shelf NAS or a DIY? I’m looking for around that much space but the consumer/prosumer grade stuff I’ve seen doesn’t really do what I want (full disk encryption, Linux, ability to customize and host a few applications).

I originally figured I’d just cram 5x12TB drives in a case, RAID5, with my Linux flavor of choice… Then I learned how bad RAID5 is with big disks.

I don’t need mirroring or high throughput (home NAS - other device backups and local streaming) but would preferably like a little redundancy… As a treat.

Got any pointers?

clif,

Looks professional to me. Good luck!

I see the thumbnail 👍

clif,

I have chickens and have seen this meme before, but it’s been years and I think I threw out my back laughing at it again.

Thanks bud.

clif,

I switched to Signal the day after Facebook bought them. I’ve seen no down sides.

clif,

Seems I’ve been watching too much Resident Evil.

Doing the quick scroll through my feed and had to pause for what I thought was the umbrella logo.

Connecticut enacts its most sweeping gun control law since the Sandy Hook shooting (apnews.com)

Connecticut’s most wide-ranging gun control measure since the 2013 law enacted after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting takes effect Sunday, with proponents vowing to pursue more gun legislation despite legal challenges happening across the country....

clif,

I instantly distrust anyone I see open carrying in public. Hunting or on the farm? Sure, makes sense. In the grocery store…ehhh.

The weekend after it became legal here I saw a guy in cut off jean shorts+beater tank with a 22LR Beretta Neo in a drop leg holster at a local diner. I can only assume he’s an elite operator.

clif,

Should have put a H on it so everyone would know.

The sad part is now the thief will get all the hornet honey : /

clif,

I thought I was in one of my 3d printing communities for a second.

Edit: tune your printer.

clif,

What if we run out of north?

clif,

The timing on this post is insane because I was just pondering the topic last night due to some recent health issues the partner is having.

Monitoring…

clif,

Making it someone else’s problem is always a possible solution to your problem.

Semi /s, I think?

clif,

I dropped Whatsapp for Signal the day after Facebook bought it. Told my friends who use it that is just a matter of time before they wreck it and exploit it for targeted ad purposes.

Took them a little longer than expected but they announced a couple of years later that they were researching how to do it. And, of course, they cross link your Facebook data and WhatsApp data.

Lots of articles out there on the topic but here’s an excerpt from 2021:

Earlier this morning, Facebook confirmed to The Information that it is developing a team that includes former Microsoft AI researchers and cryptographers to find new ways to collect data from encrypted sources such as WhatsApp–without technically having to decrypt the information.

Facebook can go fuck a duck and I’d never trust anything they’ve touched

clif,

I’ve been curious about this myself and it’s been asked a few times. I’m just regurgitating those answers with no expertise myself so… be warned.

Past answers: By keyword? Not at this time, regardless of following qualifications.

By instance/domain? Only if you’re running your own instance.

If you’re just a user, there does not appear to be a way to block an entire instance at this time. But, it’s been requested (many times) on multiple apps and in the lemmy core github via issues.

Is there a way to repurpose an Alexa device?

My girlfriend gave me an Alexa assistant as a gift with all good will, since she knows I like technology. I know in terms of privacy it is garbage, however I wonder if there is a safe way to use some functions of this device, perhaps without internet. Some way to hack it or something, do you guys know something about this?

clif,

EDIT: I misread. I don’t know what an Amazon assistant is. I’m talking about an Amazon echo below

I have one at a cabin in the mountains that has no internet or cell service. It required internet access to sync/auth with my phone so I did it at home then moved it to the cabin. I think it needed to be auth’d to an Amazon account, despite never planning or wanting to use it with an account. It was a “prize” from work.

It is literally impossible for it to connect to the internet at its location but it is a pretty good speaker. Perhaps the loneliest IoT device ever, but I’d never use it in a connected state.

If you only want it for a speaker, you could wall it off to prevent Internet access even at home

clif,

Not exactly a “fix”, but a water alarm can ensure an overflow doesn’t go unnoticed… but then you’ve got a battery to remember.

That said, the ones I have under my sink and near my water heater have been running on the original 9v battery for over 8 years now

clif,

I tried to recover my Mojang account and migrate it three times. Each attempt gets a stock response asking for certain info (receipt, email, username). When I provide this, I get a response from a different support user asking for the same thing I just provided. After three to five back and forths (with the same questions and the same answers) I get busy, frustrated, and leave it for a few weeks.

Once I have time, I start over and the exact same thing repeats again.

I wrote it off as a loss last year with an asterisk of “another reason to fucking hate Microsoft”

clif,

I’ve been noticing your username a lot lately. Solid memes, thank you for your service🫡

clif,

I once had a task stripping a ODM out of a large project, reverting to the native driver, because of its (extremely) poor performance. Also the fun of profiling the project to prove the ODM was to blame. I also empathize with the “supposed to make things simpler, makes them more complicated instead” point you make.

From many experiences, I hate ORM/ODMs and am immediately suspicious of anyone who likes them.
