ReallyKinda,

Does gearspace count?

ReallyKinda,

Yeah I was going to use the old name but didn’t want to appear to be taking a political stance ha. It just feels weird still.

ReallyKinda,

Looks intimidating for some reason. It’s a lamp!

ReallyKinda,

a perfect description

ReallyKinda,

Is that real news or fake news?

ReallyKinda,

Idk I am worried about the phrasing “the city took possession.” Most cities don’t have their own dangerous lab bio cleanup experts.

Edit: I bothered to click and it was the county health dept that took samples and stuff, glad it wasn’t the sheriff lol

ReallyKinda,

Turnitin isn’t AI technology but I assume it has similar legal ramifications and a lot of schools require teachers to have everything go through turnitin (usually by having students submit online). It just spits out a percentage so that the prof can take a closer look. Real quotes count towards the percentage displayed. Maybe with AI you’d have a bit more of a case against the company because you might claim you trusted it to be accurate or something?

Is the blockchain an interesting innovation, aside from cryptocurrencies ?

For a long time, I thought of the blockchain as almost synonymous with cryptocurrencies, so as I saw stuff like “Odyssey” and “lbry” appearing and being “based on the blockchain”, my first thought was that it was another crypto scam. Then, I just got reminded of it and started looking more into it, and it just seemed...

ReallyKinda,

Could be used for coordinating large scale decentralized projects. Say we want to organize logistics of food so that everyone gets some. After calculating need for each locale independently, Blockchain could be used for people to commit to, for example, bringing 4 crates of carrots to a location for shipping. Additional blockchain ledgers might keep track of space on the transportation vehicles etc. The ledger’s main job here would be to ensure that a given task (or a given cubic foot for the space example) is not double booked, and to allow interested parties to see where there needs to be more commitment in order to feed everyone (or fill up the ship in the space example).

ReallyKinda,

I think you did it right. You politely explained that remote work is both amicable to your position and a significant benefit to your quality of life. In order to continue selling your labour to them, you require enough flexibility to accommodate this request. If the company specifically needs the position to be in-person then unfortunately it’s time to part ways.

As far as predicting the future— if you’ve been there 15 years you probably have a decent idea of both how valuable you are to the company, and how valuable the key decisionmakers see you. It’s likely not in their best interest to cut an employee with so much institutional knowledge out just for a policy shift. Unless you’re being paid inflated wages for your position compared with the industry, I’d hazard to guess you’re safe.

ReallyKinda,

Did anyone else read that Children at Work book as a kid? It was sort of a picture book aimed at teaching kids about historical child labour in the US (mine workers, factory workers, residential factories, etc). As a kid I thought we’d committed to being ashamed of that practice which stole the energy, youth, and vitality from a disproportionately poor population of children.

Apple already shipped attestation on the web, and we barely noticed (httptoolkit.com)

Apple has deployed a system called Private Access Tokens that allows web servers to verify if a device is legitimate before granting access. This works by having the browser request a signed token from Apple proving the device is approved. While this currently has limited impact due to Safari’s market share, there are concerns...

ReallyKinda,

I had to stop using my car insurance app because it started requiring location information to open.

ReallyKinda,

My experience with Google search had degraded dramatically in the last 6mo. Just isn’t pulling up relevant results. Sometimes not even close.

ReallyKinda, to languagelearning

For Duolingo (app version) expats who are willing to pay ~$5 a month Chegg’s language learning app called Busuu has a similarly convenient app interface but does a MUCH better job teaching grammar in my opinion. I’m learning German and Infinitives were so confusing to try to pick up just using context clues on Duo. I’d tried a couple of the other free options (memrise, lingodeer, the old desktop version of Rosetta Stone) and I think Busuu is the most effective/efficient I’ve tried.

Disclaimer that I was with Duo in the early days when they were still supported by startup money and promising NO ADS EVER. FREE ACCESS FOR ALL, so I am admittedly still a little butt hurt that they moved in the direction they did.

#languagelearning

ReallyKinda,

@Dio I hadn’t heard much about it so figured I’d post to the void!

I also like that they have both a vocab and grammar practice section that keeps track of your weak, medium, and strong words and grammar topics.

The main thing I don’t like is that their free version is quite buggy and you have to close out ads for premium every few prompts.

ReallyKinda,

An old friend (30) recently moved to my area with their fiancé and they used bumble friends to find new friends. Dunno if it would work in a smaller place but maybe if you’re near the city

ReallyKinda,

Going to a local ish (not entirely tourist) bar at the same time every week is a good one!

ReallyKinda,

Kevin also enjoys a good western—he might have a healthy skepticism concerning law enforcement.

ReallyKinda,

Other things like weight, gait, the angle of your feet, and mileage can factor in too. My sister has “flat feet” so her shoes get sort of squished to one side and break down faster.

I bought a pair of Ahinsa shoes in their Sunbrella material (embarrassingly expensive) that have lasted about 3 years as my daily shoes (work, errands, casual weekend stuff, local hiking). They still look great! The inner lining is starting to get some holes and I’m considering asking a local shoe repair person if it can be replaced. Unfortunately the company shifted to using mostly a vegan leather material that I have not tried but am skeptical of.

For the price ($250) it would be reasonable to buy 3-4 cheaper pairs that only last a year.

    ReallyKinda, (edited )

I worked at a couponing business for awhile and learned that Unilever, Procter & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive own almost everything on the shelves in US groceries and pharmacies.

Additional fun fact: idk what the arrangement is now, but my aunt worked at a Kelloggs (incidentally not owned by one of the three above afaik) factory in the 80’s and after filling the branded boxes they’d fill the store brand boxes with the same stuff. Very likely you’re still supporting some of these companies buying store brands.

    ReallyKinda,

P&G recently stopped their print insert so you have to go online and unileaver only sends one out occasionally now. Keep an eye out for smartsource and Save (formerly red plum). Some weeks are skipped, there’s a schedule here.

Never had the patience for couponing myself, but the company I worked for (summer job) was one that would buy papers in bulk, clip and sort the coupons, and mail them to you for a per coupon fee. I just looked and the company is still up and running.

    ReallyKinda,

Absolutely! Potatoes are still up 300% compared to pre-pandemic at my grocery😭

You can also look at manufacturer websites for printable coupons along with taking advantage of coupons built into grocery store apps. I think a lot of them are moving digital.

Looking for suggestions for a place to move in the US as a remote employee

So the work I do is 100% remote now. I moved to Southern California because of an industry that has in part moved to remote work. My only requirements are a temperate climate, nature access and hopefully a blue-ish state. Is there a place out there that makes sense financially? I’m hoping to buy a house less then 500k. I...

    ReallyKinda,

If you go with this option and haven’t lived in a cold climate before, do your research! A lot of the lake towns up there clear out during the winter because it can be pretty rough. That also means a fair amount of property maintenance every Spring (weather damage etc). If you’re new there will be a bit of a learning curve (taking in docks, potentially a septic tank, etc). I would seriously consider visiting in the winter before you commit, and also looking up when spring typically kicks in (they have long winters).

It is gorgeous and would be a lovely environment to sit on your computer.

I would not say the area feels blue even though parts are— you’ll see more trump signs than in socal (still for some reason), and fishing, beer, and hunting are quite common hobbies which makes it feel a bit like living in a southern state imo. (I’ve lived in the east, west, Midwest, and south—can’t speak to southwest or northwest). I actually think I’d choose Minneapolis suburbs if I was in your boat and didn’t mind winter.

    ReallyKinda,

Pls release in IMAX in US too!

If my dental insurance has 100% coinsurance on preventative and basic care, 70% coinsurance on major care, a deductible of $50, and a maximum payout of $2000, does that mean I can only spend the insurance $ on major services and pay out of pocket for everything else?

    ReallyKinda,

@compg318 I’m honored, thank you for taking the time!! They pay 95% of the premium but geeze its awful coverage. The coinsurance thing was really confusing me! I don’t get why preventive wouldn’t be included, I’ll have to talk to my employer:(

How to view a feed of subscriptions only? I’ve gone into the settings and chosen the homepage drop-down that says subscriptions and saved. I’ve also chosen “subscribed ” under the drop-down next to my name in the top right while on the Home Screen. Neither seem to impact what shows up in my feed. Help?

    ReallyKinda,

I’ve found my issue! Early on I must have subscribed to some entire instances without understanding what I was doing. This causes communities that you’re not subscribed to individually to show in your subscriptions feed (since you’re subscribed to the entire instance). Leaving up in case it helps others troubleshoot.

    ReallyKinda,

Personally I don’t care if I’m talking to millions of people vs hundreds of thousands as long as there are enough people to make it feel alive and like a community.

From reading an earlier thread, I believe the boost feature makes more sense when you think about federating with Mastadon which has a reblog thing going on. So you’d get a boost to your rep if someone shared your content on mastodon.

Additionally, Kbin is planning to change the rep system to be based on up and down votes instead—it just isn’t a priority right now. Something something check the GitHub for details.

    ReallyKinda,

I upvoted and boosted you arbitrarily because everything is fake anyway!
