Catsrules,

The multi-release should let you pick the version in the beginning of the installation.

Catsrules,

If they are behind my curtains I should be charging them rent.

Catsrules,

Ahh a true romantic I see.

Catsrules,

How would they do man in the middle attacks? Don’t you need to trust their certificate first?

Catsrules,

Made some toast without knowing.

Catsrules,

Bread box? I haven’t seen one of those in decades. Maybe they have changed but they are just to make the kitchen look nice right? They don’t actually preserve anything right? If you live in a humid environment that bread is going bad immediately unless you put it in an air tight container. Mold loves water.

I use bag and twist tie or clip all of the way. If I am going to use it fast or freeze it if I am not going to finish it within a few days.

Catsrules,

Does it seal the bread or anything? From a pure preservation standpoint does the bread last longer outside of a bread box vs inside?

Does blocking the light prevent bread from going off?

Catsrules,

When you eat off food your butt will explode.

Catsrules,

Now what does cancerous polyps have to do with my shit levels?

Catsrules,

Sure it is happening to all vehicles, however with an ICE vehicle I have the option to buy an older pre Internet connect vehicle.

EVs really only became a thing 10ish years ago. There just isn’t a lot of them around to pick from, basically all have some anti privacy features.

Catsrules,

This sounds like one of those old demotivational poster.

Catsrules,

Sorry for my dumb question but what is the difference between the Linux kernel at kernel.org and say the Linux kernal at Ubuntu.org? It is just different maintainers?

For example I believe the LTS version of Ubuntu runs for 5 years and you can pay for Pro support and get 10 years on their ESM version, if I understand correctly you can keep the same kernel version though the duration.

Catsrules,

Pooh bear doesn’t like being made fun of.

Will the filtering of "advertiser unfriendly" language have larger societal implications?

I watch a lot of commentary channels on YouTube. My feed is filled with hot takes on the latest online trends and happenings, often dealing with topics like racism, sexism, abuse, and harassment. More and more, I’ve noticed YouTubers bleeping (or rather muting) words that might be flagged as being “advertiser unfriendly”...

Catsrules,

It’s the problem with letting for-profit corporations run our social networks.

What is the alternative? Government run? Non-Profit run? Community Run? All of those have their own pros and cons.

Catsrules,

I am not too worried about words and language. Sure it is possibility it could have a some affect but personally I think we have mostly already solved this issue buy using different words for things. You already linked an example. Instead of saying suicide you say unaliving oneself. It is a bit more of a mouth full but it signifies the same thing. As far as the younger generation is concerned “Old” people will use suicide and young people will using “unaliving” or whatever else they come up with.

Now topics themselves I do think we have an issues because some topics are basically off limits if you want to actually make money off advertisers. I don’t really have a good solution besides funding the creators directly like Patron for example.

Catsrules,

That is kind of where I am at. I think what we have now is one of the better solution at the moment. We also have the option to pay directly, thus bypassing alot of the advertising issues assuming their is a good size audience.

Catsrules,

Very robust OS designed for Embedded applications.

Most noteworthy is NASA used it on almost all of their mars rovers. (I think they switched to Linux on their very last one but I could be wrong)

It is used in a bunch of random stuff you have probably used it without realizing.

If someone's pronouns are any/all, what should I use or how should I determine how to refer to you and what pronouns to use?

I want to be respectful but if they say they don’t care what pronouns I use for them, that feels like it puts the decision on me to choose what to call them and I guess I would probably default to “they” because choosing a gender for them feels weird… am I wrong?

Catsrules,

What do the people who are bad with names do?

Catsrules,

Electric rail is easy.

LOL tell that to California.

Catsrules,

fucking annoying

security is annoying. You also have to carry around keys for your home, work, car, locker etc… Personally I think that is much more annoying.

can’t believe they sold people that it’s BETTER to have to get your phone out to login

Security wise it is better. Have you not seen a heist movie? There is always multiple layers of security. Two factor is another layer of your security.

incredibly annoying

Some passwords managers have 2FA built in. Just use that if your so annoyed. Less secure but still better than having no 2FA.

If you’re using this willfully you’re clearly just as worried about security as before anyway

I would be way more worried about an account without 2FA. Done right it is a huge security improvement.

Companies love having real phone numbers to pair with ‘their’ data

Good thing a proper 2FA system doesn’t require a phone number. In fact using a phone number is less secure. So avoid giving out your number and use another option if possible.

Catsrules,

Looks like he and the corner of the room is being consumed by the blank emptyness.

Catsrules,

Wouldn’t that basically kill all projects.

Part of the reason why I know Linux and open source software is because i can use it at my job and make money. If that isn’t allowed then i am basically forced to use Windows along with the rest of the world.

Not only that but a huge portion of linux code is contributes by people getting paid by these large companies.

Linux would be reduced to some weird hobby project no one knows about or really cares about and we would be all stuck on Windows or some other proprietary OS.

Catsrules,

Just another +1 reasons to use ad block.

Catsrules,

I am confused, are they turning up the volume to drown out the cheese sound or are they turning the cheese volume down?

Catsrules,

MAKES YOU THINK!!!

SORRY I DON’T KNOW SIGN LANGUAGE!!!

Catsrules,

What is it in other languages?

Catsrules,

Interesting, so if you when to buy a car outside of the US, it would be in watts? Instead of saying this car has 250 horse power you would say this car has 186kW?

In the US we do use Watts, but I think most people would associate Watts with electrical power not gas engine power. But it appears you can convert between them fairly easily.

Catsrules,

They are also super expensive.

Catsrules,

I would agree except for the 5GHz Wi-Fi. A controller having Wi-Fi is unusual. A controller having 5GHz Wi-Fi is very unusual

Catsrules,

If it has WiFi It sounds like it might be a wireless VR headset? Or maybe a Wireless add-on module for the existing headset. Although I would think that would use be the 60Ghz frequencies not the 5Ghz.

Catsrules, (edited )

Bluetooth I understand and makes perfect sense in a controller. Is a very common way to connect a human interface device wirelessly. It is a direct connection and can be very lower power and doesn’t need to transfer alot of data. Not only did the Steam controller support Bluetooth like you mentioned but i believe the recent Xbox and PS5 controllers support Bluetooth as well. I think even the Nintendo Wii controllers were Bluetooth.

WiFi doesn’t make much sense in a controller when Bluetooth already exists. Unless the controller has features that would benefit using WiFI over Bluetooth.

For example I could see maybe an advantage in a steam steaming/steam remote play situation. Instead of a controller going Bluetooth to local device and that local device passing the commands to the remote device, the controller could talk directly over the network to the remote device saving some latency for a more responsive experience. But I don’t know why they would pick 5GHz that is more of a higher bandwidth application as far as i understand. You don’t need that for sending basic controller commands 2.4GHz would be more than enough. Maybe it has something to do with Latency if your 2.4GHz network is congested you could to go with the less congested 5GHz frequency.

Catsrules,

No problem, just pointing out that it would be unusual for a controller to have 5GHz WiFi. We are guessing what kind of device Valve is making. This device having 5GHz WiFi lowers the chances of it being a controller.

Catsrules,

Can they still call it WiFi if it is a proprietary version of WiFi?

Catsrules,

Yeah that is a good reason.

And looking at the documentation it just saids it uses the frequency band of WiFi not that it uses WiFI. www.rra.go.kr/ko/license/A_b_popup.do?app_no=2023…

Who needs chainmail when you have tiremail.

Catsrules,

They should have thought of that before they became peasants.

What are your go-to brands for any electronic, networking, computing accessories or peripherals?

Hi all, since ya’ll are self hosters, I’m sure you all deal with all sorts of different pieces of hardware, accessories, peripherals, and what not; just wondering if you could please share your favorite, solid, “go to” brands for overall things you need for your setup such as cables (all types), adapters, dongles, power...

Catsrules,

What do you think will be the alternatives. I have looked around and realistically Logitech kind of dominates the market as far as mice and keyboards.

Catsrules,

Oh wow that is really fast drive. I will have to take a look at that one. Glad to see other companies are starting to come out with fast drives.

A few years ago when I was looking the SanDisk was the only drive that was actually fast on writing. Every flash drive I found basically lied about the write speed. They would say oh it is 300mbps but when it would only be able to sustain that speed for a very short time then it would would drop to a slow crawl of 10mbps sometimes even less. One drive was 3mpbs. Or they wouldn’t advertise the write speed at all and just focus on read speeds.

There was those portable SSDs but they were still a little big and I wanted something small I could carry with keys.

Catsrules,

Luckily is wasn’t those but the flash drive version. Why SanDisk has the same name for like 4 different products is beyond me.

Catsrules,

And you can’t do shit about that, there is no ways to influence them

You influence them via your business and local laws. That is why I specifically mentioned that the best solution is having multiple small companies. If you have problems with one you go to another one. Just like what you do with any other company. Yeah it stuck to have to move but it is better move and get a better situation then be stuck in a bad situation.
