Hi all, since ya’ll are self hosters, I’m sure you all deal with all sorts of different pieces of hardware, accessories, peripherals, and what not; just wondering if you could please share your favorite, solid, “go to” brands for overall things you need for your setup such as cables (all types), adapters, dongles, power...
What USB drive is the Kingston drive? I looked years ago but all of them sucked on write speed. The best one I found was SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.2. I think it is actually a solids state drive vs a traditional USB drive. It definitely isn’t the smallest flash drive, but I am not waiting 30 minutes to copy of 4GB ISO file to it.
I think we have to consider that the principles of the free software movement, revolutionary though they genuinely were, were also set in the same mindset that latterly saw its founder Richard Stallman spectacularly fall from grace. They are principles that deal in software development and licensing in strict isolation, outside...
Linux runs the world at this point. Bad people and organization use it as well as good people and organization use it. I personally don’t think we can have it both ways without severely limiting the license that I think ultimately hurts the good people and organization more than it would hurt the bad.
Maybe I am wrong about this but if for profit companies aren’t allowed to use Linux I think Linux is basically dead. Or becomes so small no one will care about it.
Yes many for profit companies use the code without giving back. However it is my understanding the most big companies do give something back. I think Google is one of the top followed by Microsoft and I think Amazon has realized it is more work to not give back then to give back and has become like the 5th or 6th.
Sure I would agree they are probably giving the bare minimum back, but at the very least they are giving something back. Even if they give nothing back i think the more use of Linux the better the world is.
If Linux didn’t exist or wasn’t available for Amazon they would either develop their own solution or just buy it from Microsoft, Apple, IBM etc… Now we have a more lockdown eco system and less people are incentivized to pick Linux as their platform of choice to develop software. Instead of using Apache or Nginx the world would be using Microsoft IIS or something similar.
Personally I am very guilty of taking advantage of open source. I have use open source projects all of my life and I can say I haven’t given nearly enough back that i have received. Sure I am not a for profit company so you could argue it is different. But even still I should give back more.
Your assuming everyone wants to own property over renting.
House and property ownership has a lot of responsibility and expenses involved. Your water heater breaks well there is $1000+ your roof needs replacing there is 30K. All of that goes away when you rent as it isn’t your responsibility.
If you own property it can be harder and more risky to relocate. I know a few people that bought in 2007 and then were stuck as they couldn’t afford to move because they were upsidedown on their house.
Not saying renting is all sunshine and roses. I personally would rather own then rent but home ownership isn’t for everyone.
But I do think it is a major problem when you have a few companies buying up all property so no one else can afford it. But I don’t think being a Landlord is inherently evil.
In a perfect world sure, government is fully funded and runs smoothly people care about the everyone etc… etc…
But in reality I really would be very hesitant to want to live in that world. It is very scary to have a single organization control all your housing. At least with the way it currently is if you don’t like your landlord you can go somewhere else. If the government owns everything your kind of stuck dealing with the same organization no matter where you go. Governments are not immune to corruption and can screw you over even worse in some cases then an organization.
In my opinion the best solution is many private citizens and small rental companies combined with government enforcing laws protecting both parties. However one big issues I am seeing is huge companies buy up everything in a small area and build a monopolies on rentals. That isn’t good either.
It was one of the King Kong movies. Bugs are huge and eat people. I just saw it once I don’t remember anything else about the movie but the bug parts are burned in my mind.
spoilerDidn’t she also show up in other seasons. Seems like she was a traitor or something and got put in prison but then Jack had to use her to capture other people later on.

I have an evaporative cooler it really doesn’t have temperature control. It is kind of whatever the outside temperature is -20f degrees with 75% humidity.
Yeah some body parts are a little weird today, but what about tomorrow, next week, next month, next year?
I really haven’t given this much attention but the last time I did maybe 6-8 months ago, most of the photos had hands that were stuff of nightmares. Looking at them again today at least from the quick 10 minutes of looking they have improve significantly. Yeah they are still far from perfect but a handful are very good, most are passable and a few are still nightmare fuel.
We’ve heard about the normalized scams. Now let’s hear about the scams that are so completely obviously scams that it is a miracle that anybody would ever fall for them.
Following the news that “Beeper becomes first RCS chat app for iPhones, introducing support for Google Messages with RCS” what are your thoughts on the app and on the RCS forced by Google? Is it worth a try? Or should I stick to Matrix and Signal?...
Looks very interesting. I particularly am interesting in how they are merging all of the chat clients into one client. From what I can tell it looks like they are using Matrix Bridges or something on the back end?
The hoverbike scene in Boba Fett. And basically anything to do with those teenagers gang members. Their bikes remind me of kitchen aid mixers meet the power rangers. The affects are so bad, the story is so bad the music is so bad. I don’t think I found one good quality in that scene. Except it made me laugh for how bad it was.
And there is another scene when they are on battle and one of them does a “cool” spin for absolutely no reason.
Have to use Windows for work (I’ve asked), the ads have been getting worse and worse on my work laptop. Today got a game ad notification… That’s clearly too far, right? Like I have to clear notifications, so I have to see it
My point isn’t how simple it is to turn off, my point is why is that turn on by default in the first place? Last I checked to join a Window’s domain you need a Professional/Enterprise version of Windows. This is software intended for a business environment not only that, it also costs much more as well. Yet here we are by default my Profession Windows install comes with Candy Crush and Game Pass ads. Great job Microsoft you have done it again.
I agree cash sucks in may ways. But in may ways cash is extremely good. For example privacy wise cash it king as it is for the most part is untraceable. I take $1,000 out of the bank. And it is much harder for anyone but myself to keep track of where I am spending that $1,000. Vs a debit/credit card the banks have a complete logs of everything I am buying. And potentially the retailers could be tracking my purchases via my card as well.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they do. Lets say I get $100 bill out of the ATM, if the government wanted to track that bill. They would need to find that bill again and then try to back track the route the bill took to me. A very time intensive task and ultimately could lead to a dead end. After all how many people keep track of the serial numbers of your large bills?
Compare that to a card. Literally everything about it is tracked, it is all done automatically and can be acquired from the bank.
The car I need to go to work? Was I suppose to be born with 3-15K for that car? The House I want to buy. guess I just need to dig though the laundry for that 500K I left in my pants pocket?
I am all about not going into debt but often times it is a necessary evil.
Doesn’t your credit score affect the type if interest you will get even on an assets lone? My understanding at least in the US credit scores affect basically all credit lines. That is why they recommend getting a credit card to help built you score. As long as you pay it off every month it is basically free use of someone else’s money. That builds up your credit score.
After thinking about it longer then i care to admit I think i finally agreed with you.
As you said it is all relative, from the prospective of the moving portal. You could say it isnt moving at all but the entire world around it is moving, thus when people enter the portal from the portal’s prospective they people are the ones moving and will continue moving when they exist.
Hmm tlnit that i typed this out I feel like i didn’t do a very good job. Owell the answer is B.
