Middle-aged and some what tongue tied (medical condition) anyone else in this situation, and go through with the procedure?

I’m a middle aged guy, who, a few years ago, was off handedly told by a dental hygienist while getting my teeth cleaned, that I was tongue tied. I’ve had a flap of skin under my tongue which holds it down, it isn’t severe, but it does restrict my tongues mobility. For instance, I can’t really stick my tongue out very far...

rosymind,

I was born with one and it was partially corrected at birtb. I can’t stick my tongue out far, but I have none of the other issues you’ve listed (partly because I’m a woman married to a man).

I highly doubt you would regret having it done as long as you’re in a clean environment with a surgeon who knows what they are doing

rosymind,

I can’t do it, either. The only way it’s tolerable is if I’m sitting next to them and can occasionally grab the controller (husband and I get through 1 player games this way, currently playing The Sinking City)

rosymind,

This is not the future I envisioned as a kid

rosymind,

Yes! Can we pin this somewhere for new Lemmy users to read? I’m so over the right/wrong ONLY attitudes

rosymind,

Take the hardworking co-worker aside. Say:

“Hey, this situation has been difficult for me. I enjoy working with both you and Lazy, and I miss the days when everyone got along. I don’t want to invalidate your frustrations, but it’s stressfull to hear about how lazy Lazy is being. It doesn’t bother me that Lazy does less work, but the tention between you two does bother me because I enjoy both of your company”

And see how Hardworker responds. Then go to Lazy.

“Hey Lazy. Hardworker seems upset that you take more breaks than they do. Do you think you could talk to her and try to clear the air? I enjoy working with both of you, but the tension between you two is upsetting”

And again, see how they respond.

It’s entirely possible that neither of them will respond well to this, so bare that in mind. If it’s stressing you out, though, you have an obligation to yourself to try. Just also be aware that it could backfire. So be sure to weigh whether or not it’s worth it to get involved

rosymind,

I love the simplicity and directness of this answer

rosymind,

Excerpt:

Professor Spencer says gynandromorphs – animals with both male and female characteristics in a species that usually have separate sexes – are important for our understanding of sex determination and sexual behaviour in birds.

The main groups in which the phenomenon has been recorded include animal species which feature strong sexual dimorphism; most often insects, especially butterflies, crustaceans, spiders, even lizards and rodents.

“This particular example of bilateral gynandromorphy – male one side and female the other – shows that, as in several other species, either side of the bird can be male or female.

“The phenomenon arises from an error during female cell division to produce an egg, followed by double-fertilization by two sperm,” he explains.

rosymind,

Idk. I recognize a lot of my beliefs and behaviours as cringe, but I think I’ve cringed so hard at them that I’m now on the other side of that. I look back at my ignorant, gullible, past-self with compassion and the understanding that I’m still likely holding on to incorrect beliefs (and that I’ll likely continue to grow through them) It’s partly why I tend to be so argumentative, I think. (How do you grow without challenge?)

I currently hold the belief of: Love yourself, it’ll help to generate more compassion for those around you

(Though I confess I still have many moments of wanting to call people idiots, and it takes a lot to realize that I, too, could be the idiot. It’s a process, ya know?)

rosymind,

I haven’t yet seen anyone else point out:

If the embryo was tested, they would know the sex before transferring it to the surrogate uterus (easily avoiding the problem). IVF is insanely expensive, as are surrogates. (Surrogates go for $50k plus per pregnancy)

Whoever did this comic is so willfully (and woefully) ignorant on so many levels that I wonder how they’re able to function at all

rosymind,

Depends on the game, for me. I couldn’t imagine trying to play a game like Stellaris on a console- but a game like Horizons is better suited to a console system. I play Skyrim (yes, I know) with a controller on pc, tho. Husband and I played Diablo4 with me using the console and him using his laptop with my wide-screen moved into the livingroom temporarily

Personally I think both are needed for optimal gaming.

rosymind,

That was my thought as well. I’ve seen what some homeless people are capable of. (Not trying to dump on unhoused people, here, but there are some seriously ill people left out on the streets). This glass needs to be nearly unbreakable for it to work

rosymind,

Yeah, the purpose of the label is entirely defeated here, because almost everything has a label on it. I’m waiting for the day they have planes fly over with banners reading “breathing this air has been known to the state of California to cause birth defects and cancer”

I mean, it would probably be true, but still

rosymind,

There are too many letters in “Rafael” for the average Texan to read. Ted is much easier for them

rosymind,

It’s so gross and weird. Also this makes no sense.

Mine looks more like the one on the right, and I’ve been around the block more times than I can count… it’s just physiology, sex parts look different for us all. Just like every dick I’ve seen in person looks a bit different from the one before. Some are longer, shorter, wider, bent to the right or left, different shades, some even have cute lil moles on them, some hairier higher on the shaft than others. We’re just different and that’s fun!

This is wrong on so many levels: body shaming, incest, “slut” shaming, describing how his own child’s reproductive bits look like, just… ugh

rosymind,

And they’re trying to gaslight us into thinking they’re not

rosymind,

Yikes. My condolences. (Especially about the cats)

Spam calls and texts are driving me fing crazy anyone have suggestions?

After repeated data breaches that no company really seems to give a s— about my phone is blowing up with literally hundreds of spam calls and texts month. I get and make MAAAAYBE 2 or 3 important calls per month, 180-200 of the rest are literally all spam. Anyone have any suggestions, apps ect that they have found refuge with?...

rosymind,

Tried this a couple of times, but they kept calling my junk phone. I got like 7 or 8 calls the day after Thanksgiving. I block the numbers, but the next number will just be one or two digits different

I keep the junk phone for things like shopping clubs, pharmacy reminders, etc. I have a seperate number for people and trusted sources (though I realize that anyone can be compromised. I’ll get a fresh number once that happens again)

Anyway, point is- I dont think they’re human scammers. At least not the ones calling me

rosymind,

You can sometimes get a fresh number. I got lucky with mine (keep my junk phone for club-cards and the like)

rosymind,

They do not go away. I have literally forgotten about this phone to the point of it being dead/drained for an extended period of time… they calls never stop

rosymind,

I’ve answered two recently, but hadn’t answered them for about 6 mo to a year or so.

Before that- probably 3 years ago, now, I contacted the carrier about spam texts from websites and that stopped, though I still get spam texts from numbers (mostly political)

This number belonged to someone who was ditching creditors, so I think they eventually sold the number and it just gets passed around. Half the reason I keep it is so that it doesnt get released to someone else (it’s like something out of a pass-it-along horror movie)

Most of the time I dont care, but occationally I leave the volume up for some reason and end up with a 6am wake up spam call. I can ignore it 90% of the time

rosymind,

Yeah, like what are we supposed to do when there are few side-walks, work is 30-1hr away at freeway speeds, and public transit is either dirty, unreliable, or unsafe?

Most of us want to do away with our fossil fuel dependancy- but we need better options.

And before anyone says walk or take a bike, that isn’t feasable for everyone

rosymind,

“Stay away” with various methods given to understand the meaning of the words (images, signs, numbers, sounds, etc)

rosymind,

I got anxiety just reading that

rosymind,

They key is to do both. Listen intentently, respond with something like “wow that sucks, would you like a hug?” And then while hugging say something like “is there anything I can do to help you with this?”

That’s what will give you your answer. If she says “no” then just let it be. If she says “I don’t know” help to guide her to the solution. Ask “what do you think could be done to make it better?” And let the pieces fall in place.

Even if you know the answer, it’s better to let people come up with it on their own. They’ll feel understood and empowered, and you won’t get shit on for being calous. Everyone wins

rosymind,

Yeah, our problem is we have 4 cats. Vomit and occational butt-nuggets are a thing, and I don’t want that smeared across the foor

rosymind,

Agreed. I feel the same way. It’s like Nihilism is the gateway many of us have to pass through before we can understand our value (and the significance of life and all existence in general)

I wonder if you’ve come to the same conclusions that I have, or if your thinking branched off into something different.

Either way, we are who we were meant to be :)

rosymind,

Distant in all the ways that matter, but we check in every once and a while.

When I say every once and a while, I saw one of my brothers about 5 years ago… after not having seen him for nearly 20.

My sister doesn’t talk to me because I told our mother that her child (she put her up for adoption when she was born because my sister was YOUNG) is alive and wants to connect. I haven’t seen my sister in more than a decade

My eldest brother is the closest, and I’ll be seeing him soon. I know almost nothing about his personal life, and probably won’t see him again for at least a year

We’re all extremely different people

rosymind,

Seriously?

What nation goes: “Hey neighbor, you wanna kill a bunch of each other’s soldiers and use a bunch of resources and pollute the earth? Maybe we can also kill some innocent babies while bombing hospitals for funsies?”

Wars are usually fought because one nation (or group) wants what the other has. If a side could get exactly what they want, there wouldn’t be a war over it.

Wars are about taking: land, people, resources, revenge.

There’s nothing consensual about it

rosymind,

There are laws against breaking into people’s houses, but it still happens. Just because someone proclaims something illegal doesn’t mean it just stops happening. That’s just not how the world works

rosymind,

Hey, I used “wherewithal” the way you use the word, but my husband corrected me (and the dictionary confirmed it) that the word basically means money/resources (just fyi)

rosymind,

Huh. It may be because I’m not exactly neurotypical, but I am not only the child of immigrants, I came to the Americas as an 11 year old. (Ok so it’s the U.S, which also might skew things) I did NOT clamp onto my parents identity. I love being an American (right down to bitching about how bad it can be, and how much things need to change)

My husband was born in Alabama with a Korean mother and also does not think of himself as anything other than American. Again, tho, he isn’t neurotypical. Hm.

Got any of those statistics?

rosymind,

As an Americam, I approve of this satire!

Wait a minute.

It… it is satire, right?

As an American, I am also now confused.

What if… what if this isn’t satire and someone REALLY thinks that being European is better than being American? No… surely it can’t be!

America is the greatest!

…RIGHT?!

Hello?..

(O_O)

rosymind,

Pew pew pew

rosymind,

Phew, for a minute there I was worried you were going to take aim* at my bud lite, guns, and flag

*pun intended

rosymind,

And maternal mortality in the developed world!

rosymind,

I’ll give you a hospital bill to use as a napkin with that that hot dog!

rosymind,

Great, now I want a burger

rosymind,

Only thing imma disagree on is that we’ve ever reached peak human

rosymind,

Why would someone eat your armpi… oh

rosymind,

That’s for him to know, us to guess, and his partners to find out

rosymind,

I don’t really see how people chosing to be barefoot has anything to do with their ability to make eye-drops, unless the aforementioned people are using their feet to do it

rosymind,

I see. I figuered as long as they’d wear hair nets, masks, coats and gloves it shouldn’t matter what’s going on with their feet- but I suppose that could make sense? Idk, It still feels like a strange thing to be fixated on…

I didn’t read the article, though

rosymind,

And now I’m imaging them all in a bus, driving upward from someone’s toes, with a bumper sticker that says:

“Destination: EyeDrops”

rosymind,

I’d think the reason for foot protection in a hospital setting is more to protect you from their illnesses, or drop damage (say, a needle or other sharp object)

I suppose I must confess. I’ve worked in dental, so I’m familair with sterilization proceedures/ ppe. I remember learning to wear hard shoes (hardly any one does in reality) to avoid what I mentioned above

It’s strange that employees would be barefoot, but I still don’t really see how feet are any more dangerous than any other part of the body, especially given that they’re surely not handling the materials with their feet!

I can accept that I’m wrong, it just seems strange to highlight the bare feet as a primary issue unless somehow the bacteria in the drops are a type most often found on feet

rosymind,

Roger that

rosymind,

And yet, somehow, your life just wouldn’t be the same without him

(Better, maybe, but not the same)

rosymind,

It’s based on a webcomic where someone’s partner has a miscarriage in a hospital setting
