I’ve been a long time Debian user. Debian 12 has been almost a perfect release so far. Highly recommended.

I can see where they’d spend less maintaining rhythmbox and totem as they don’t really help with office productivity. So many keyboards and mice are Bluetooth these days it kinda seems weird to stop working on the tools you’re customers actually need.

Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows.

It’s open source and it’s free to use. Anything can sound bad when you just make shit up.

Clearly they’re profitable. 40% of all phone sales in the USA are Android. There’s literally billions being made.

This is one of those situations where the solution is so obvious I kind of hate that I didn’t get it beforehand. We have open standards for everything so it makes sense to build an open standard for “Linux in Business”.

I’ve had nothing but problems with Ubuntu. There’s always some random crash that I don’t know what it is but I get a pop up. Sometimes you think you’re installing from apt but it secretly is running snap commands.

The OS should never hide things from me. I’m the user and I’m root.

If I wanted an operating system to be sneaky and do things behind my back I’ll go to Windows.

I know they have unencrypted versions from my phone because my tablet and desktop version of messages seamlessly connects to the chat. So it’s probably be E2E in transit alone.

You’d be surprised.

While technically POSSIBLE, how viable is it to run Adobe apps, especially Premiere and After Effects, on Linux

I’m keeping it broad by not specifying a distro. I’m just curious is this a real option for actual editing professionals? As far as I understand you can make it work by running under Wine, but I’m guessing this comes with significant drawbacks. I’m having trouble finding any information on both the current state of...

Better off using native Linux applications. We have DaVinci Resolve, Lightworks, Blender, and Kdenlive. All are fantastic video editors that can give you very professional results.

Personally I use Kdenlive:

  • Doesn’t require GPU
  • Automatic subtitles
  • Support for LUTs
  • Nested timelines
  • Proxy/Offline editing
  • Warp stabilizer
  • Free and Open Source

It’s probably the most feature complete FOSS editor.

The feature was part of the April release. That and Open AI Whisper support for subtitles.

Why does the Steam Deck use Arch Linux?

Please understand that I haven’t tried or installed Arch Linux yet. From what I understand by reading and watching related videos, Arch is often breaks and a lot of time is required to fix issues. But I have also read comments from arch users who claim that arch has only crashed or caused them problems only a couple of times...

For the same reason Chromebooks use Gentoo Linux. It fit their workflow in development an immutable OS.

There are a few hang ups an end user might encounter but with an immutable OS it’s been thoroughly tested before reaching the user.

At the end of the day Linux is Linux and it doesn’t really matter what you build your system on. If properly tested, it’ll be rock solid.

The only way to avoid Grammarly using your data for AI is to pay for 500 accounts

Protip: You can also simply not use grammarly.

I typically buy last generation refurbished. I was able to get the Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra for sub $800. The last generation Fold is still over $1000. I need the cool-factor to calm down so the old ones are cheaper.

These are natural growing pains of any new platform. A lot of people will come over, check it out, and then go back to Reddit.

I’ve been running Linux for 20 years. Not once have I been in a situation that required an antivirus. The one time I’ve had a security breach it was not a virus but user error that left a door open. And even then, it was just ransomware, not a virus.

It’s about familiarity. I didn’t know how to install drivers on Windows. I searched and didn’t see anything in the settings about firmware updates. I was stumped.

My friend comes over and tells me I have to go to the manufacturer website to download drivers and it was like going back in time.

I have used Thinkpad x230, x1 3rd Gen, and x1 6th Gen. All of them have been flawless with Linux.

Just to be clear, Syncthing is not cloud storage but file syncing. It can be used in a similar way but it does have different strengths and weaknesses.

Anything that can load videos from my NAS. Preferably with software like Kodi. Streaming services come and go but my media library has been growing for years.

Phones should have 2 USB C ports

One should be at the bottom one at the top. I understand space on the phone is a premium but a second port would make the phone so much more usable. Wired headphones, flash drives, camera modules, speaker modules, keyboards, even connection to a TV, all could be used while charging. It’s a shame it’s not a thing, USB is...

I can use my USB port while charging. I have wireless changing and also a dock that gives me hdmi and 2 usb ports that will charge as I use it.

Only browsers blessed by a single company can view the entire web. Not exactly a feature of the free and open web.

Is using terms like 2SLGBTQQIA+ insensitive?

So I’ve recently been trying to use the term “2SLGBTQQIA+” over “LGBTQ” as it seems more inclusive, and includes first nation peoples beliefs on sexuality and gender, as well as including and differentiating “queer” from “questioning”. It’s not perfect (still combines A for ally and A for Asexual) but I think...

I’ve always understood it that Q was for queer and that queer was an umbrella term.

Isn’t that the FS that constantly needs to be defragged? Do people still do that?

Where Do You Sit in the Movie Theater?

It seems everyone has a different sitting preference at the movies. I want the ultimate experience: the screen completely filling my vision, like I’m in the movie. Usually the third or fourth row. My wife complains we’re too close. Then I see people way in the back and it must be like watching TV the screen is so small. I...

The theater by my house is only $11. That’s worth it to me.

Arch teaches you about the inner workings of Linux. Mostly because it breaks all the time and you have to fix it.

Tank Girl. No one liked that movie when it came out. I left the theater with the biggest grin on my face. Absolutely awesome. Still one of my favorites.

It was completely different than the comics but it was still very fun. Especially in 1995.

See, this is exactly what’s amazing about Linux. It can be whatever you want it to be. It’s yours to customize.

A friend of mine moved to a small town after high school. Everyone treated her like shit until she became a member of the local church. She is an atheist but she was tired of getting the stinkeye every time she went to the grocery store. She told me she felt like she had no choice.

If it’s not an image heavy document converting to markdown might be a good solution.

People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?

Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...

I think you’ll find a lot more leftists interested in platforms that are not powered solely by money and profit. Lemmy, much like Mastodon and other federated platforms, only need instances to run to be usable. It doesn’t require millions of dollars to keep it afloat.

Generally speaking centrist and right wingers, especially in Western countries, tend to be very capitalist. They only understand the value in terms of money.

Meta only had 12 years to implement this. They simply could not be bothered. Even with free libraries and documentation of how to implement this web standard.

Oh, in that case I guess this is fine.

I want to move to Linux but I need to be able to access my apps that are not supported (kbin.social)

Hey, I use the Adobe Suite for daily use to build and develop posts and videos for multiple people and can't have my workflow slow down by learning a new application, I've looked into Linux a few times and want to really move over in the future but due to it not having support for Adobe, I'm not sure what to do....

art,

Moving to Linux is probably not going to be a good idea on your work computer. Just grab Virtual Box and install Linux there and learn Linux.

This is exactly my outlook. Ext4 has proven itself as a robust and reliable file system.

I’m just a casual gamer but I use Debian stable and I’ve had very few problems. I think a lot of people believe that Debian stable is too old to be usable but steam works flawlessly. At least in my experience.

I do. I watch a ton of YouTube. Revanced and NewPipe are rad but there’s no effortless way to have an adfree experience on the TV.

My father used to repair gas pumps for a living. I went out with him on a few jobs. You’d be amazed how many large facilities that have their own fleet of cars end up setting up their own gas station. Universities, large hospitals, movie sets, and of course emergency vehicles.
