Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank - ‘You won’t need a bank account... it would blow my mind if we don’t have that rolled out by the end of next year.’ (www.theverge.com)

“If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...

Every time that dude gives another “vision of the future” it just sounds worse and worse.

I don’t want another commercial bank but on the internet. I want more non-profits. I don’t want self-driving cars. I want better public transportation.

For some reason I read that as Zoidberg. I was like no contest! Why not zwidberg?

I’ve been poor before but I’ve always had access to food and decent shelter. I use to eat ramen noodles, chili and rice, and baloney sandwiches. I could really stretch out a $20 a week food budget.

When I eat a microwave meal I’m just happy I can afford to enjoy variety in my meals now though I still like sandwiches.

15 years of Android memories – When did you get your first Android phone? (blog.google)

My first one was a Samsung Galaxy S1 that I got in 2013 and it was a great little device that was easy to open up and repair. It had only 512MB of RAM but that was plenty for basic phone needs, web browsing and running some Android apps like AnkiDroid at the time.

Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V. This was in 2011 or 2012. It was a prepaid service and the phone was only $150. It was rooted so I could remove the Virgin Mobile software from the tiny 2Gb(?) storage.

This feels like satire.

The employees secretly using AI at work (www.bbc.com)

Berlin-based business consultant Matt and his colleague were among the first at their workplace to discover ChatGPT, mere weeks after its release. He says the chatbot transformed their workdays overnight. “It was like discovering a video game cheat,” says Matt. “I asked a really technical question from my PhD thesis, and...

Much of my job should have been computerized a while back, and we now have numerous tools to automate various tasks. However, my comprehension of the results enables me to distinguish between reliable data and errors, which my boss is unable to do due to their limited understanding of the output.

Having a good boss that understands that is key. Not everyone is so lucky on that front.

Any company without a strong union.

AI content generation is on fast track to kill the whole porn industry.

If you think about it, there are already tools that can do pretty convincing face swaps with few clicks and just from one low res photo at whatever angle. Long are gone the times you had to train the models for hours and had to have few hundred photos to just get “okay” fake. Once deepfake video creation becomes this simple,...

Sounds like you don’t understand the sex work industry.

  • People already get porn for free. Nothing new here.
  • Some things you can’t synthesize. Like experiences.
  • For a lot of people it’s not just about the sex but the personalities of the models.
  • Some make the content because they like to make the content.

There’s also a really nice activity pub plugin for WordPress, a platform that is already in use by a lot of media outlets.

Has HP printers always been this bad? (sh.itjust.works)

So my mother recently bought an ET-2800, By HP we had an HP printer before and we got a new one because the old one would not work with my sister’s Windows 11 Laptop. So I had to set it up for my mother, the manual said you can use it without the app. But there was no way to physically do that. Anyway, I downloaded the app on...

Sometimes it helps to have a visual aide for what you’re doing. CLI/TUI apps are often faster, or when accessing remotely, lower bandwidth.

Also, let people enjoy thing.

The jpg format is like 30 years old. Newer formats like jxl, webp, and avif offer much better compression. Right now it looks like webp is the most compatible with browsers so far.

I think they mean that it’s costing companies a lot of money to operate but their returns aren’t high enough to justify the costs.

Nothing Distrobox can’t fix. I can run AUR, RPM, and even those deb files that only run on Ubuntu for some damn reason on my Debiain system.

It’s probably already in your default repos too.

Yup. Should work fine. I know some people use this to get Divinci Resolve to work on Ubuntu.

I pay for Spotify and YouTube music. If I really like an album I’ll still go to Bandcamp if I can and grab the flac files. If it’s not there I’ll just BitTorrent/Soulseek/yt-dlp it.

If I don’t have raw media files, I don’t actually own it.

I’m hoping like Epic Games, the new parent just let’s the do their thing. Wishful thinking I’m sure.

art,

I actually really like Spotify as a service. YouTube music comes free with YouTube premium and that is the simplest way to stops add on Roku. Plus, I don’t mind supporting video makers.

As we approach every service charging $30 a month, there’s going to be a point where the average consumer will just give up.

Meanwhile, your seedbox will still only be $5.

I pay $5 for evoseedbox.

Will Lemmy soon drive Innovation in the Fediverse?

Currently lemmy is like the speedboat next to the heavy steam boat of Mastodon etc. While lemmy is still dynamic and flexible and can introduce new features easily without scaring off its established user base, mastodon can not do such experiments so easily. Now, if lemmy gains more momentum in the fediverse and establishes...

art,
@art@lemmy.world avatar

It’s weird that everyone keeps looking at this thru the eyes of capitalism. We don’t need neck-break-speed feature updates, we don’t need to appease our shareholders. If one platform grows on the Fediverse the others don’t get “left in the dust”.

We’re not in competition, we are a community.

Running a solution like Wiregaurd + VPS or Tailscale is probably your best solution. It’ll be transparent for you and won’t set off any red flags for the network.

I’ve run tailscale on a cellular home internet platform as well a shared one like you have and it was slick.

I like to bootleg the major studios and patreon the indie artists that are giving their shit away for free.

art,

I’ve never seen an indie artist on Patreon that delete shit or used any kind of DRM. At least no artist that I’ve been inspired to support.

I try to never steal from people, only corporations.

I know that in the future Matrix will only get better. I know that in the future Discord will become the victim of enshitification.

Discord does have a lot of features that Matrix does not have yet. And more and more of those eventually will be behind a paywall.

Plus, I appreciate the fact that I could use a large selection a matrix clients. The only third-party client I can find for Discord is Discordo.
