I have had several Thinkpads. My current is the x1 6th gen and it’s wonderful. Dell Laditiues are good too.

Has anyone built a decent Linux solution for this yet?

The average user doesn’t give a shit about what OS they’re running. They also don’t know what tools they need. I remember a client who dropped $700 on Photoshop because “How else can I resize my photos?”

Linux is to hard for someone who doesn’t know why it’s bad to install multiple antivirus suites. People who don’t know the difference between a web browser and a search engine.

Linux will only ever be for hobbyist because they the only ones who give a damn.

Le Potato aka Libre Computer is still on Amazon in the US for $35.

thank you Linux for giving a damn about Bluetooth headphones (feddit.de)

For context, LDAC is one of the few wireless audio codecs stamped Hi-Res by the Japan Audio Society and its encoder is open source since Android 8, so you can see just how long Windows is sleeping on this. I’m excited about the incoming next gen called LC3plus, my next pair is definitely gonna have that.

Not sure if it’s possible on your laptop but I upgraded my Wifi/BT with a AX210NGW on my Thinkpad. Works perfectly now.

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

This sounds like an Ubuntu problem, sadly. Ubuntu is, in my experience, a mess of a distribution. Debian works almost flawlessly and I think you’ll have less issues with a properly run distro.

I don’t think there’s a need. I keep my system patched and I only install from trusted sources. It might make sense in a corporate environment but for a single user machine I can’t image ever needing it.

Just this year Wayland finally became my default. It’s still broken in a few ways but I’m now on the side of it being a better solution that X.

Not everyone’s user experience is the same. There’s a lot of use cases that Wayland doesn’t make sense yet.

I’m excited watching the maturity of Pipewire/Wayland. I do a lot of audio and video work with Linux and these tools are so close to being perfect.

Debian is always my go-to. Is the users are coming from Windows I might say the DE to Cinnamon.

Some things to keep in mind about the theater experience.

  • Only a handful of theaters do film IMAX anymore. A lot of IMAX locations are just 4k DCP (Digital Cinema Package)
  • Most theaters in the world are digital projectors with a max resolution of 1998x1080 or 2048x858

Part of the reason these factors still exist is cost. A poorly maintained film projector with a lousy film print can ruin a movie going experience. Hollywood would sometimes release so very shitty prints. The digital projectors are much easier to maintain so the experience is often more ideal for the average movie goer.

Having said that, if a theater takes good care of their film projectors and they have a well made and well kept print, the experience can be amazing.

I don’t have hard numbers, just loose ones. From what I’ve read Reddit had about 400 million daily active users. From what I know only about one or two million users are on Lemmy. Now that’s a massive jump from where it was just a few months ago, but it’s a drop in the hat.

If my information is even remotely correct that’s less than 1%.

Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I’ve tried using it over the years but I never liked it because there was no information. So last night I looked at my local city and there is almost no information at all. I spent a few hours last night adding buildings and restaurants and removing incorrect items. It was actually kind of fun and therapeutic and I plan to do...

Every time I move to a new area this is one of things I do. Outside of Google, a lot of the other maps start with open street maps as their data set as it’s an excellent jumping off point. So you’re not just helping open street maps You’re helping most map applications.

Windows XP looked like such a downgrade from Windows 2000. Lacked stability. Wanted something more customizable. I liked the idea of community powered software so Linux was the solution.

5 minutes is about as long as it took to download that mammoth 2MB jpg from this struggling Lemmy server.

Seriously though, I can download an ISO, flash it to USB, boot up and do an entire system install in less than 15 minutes. The only limiting factor is the speed of the internet.

It’s a lot more common than you think.

The green color that Apple chose for SMS was picked because of how harsh it is on the eyes. They want you to hate talking to non Apple users.

If you’re an invested user of Office, just get the Microsoft 365 suite. It’s a decent value. If you aren’t that picky, online office is pretty decent too. And of course there’s always LibreOffice.

Everyone should be using a password manager. Every service should have a different password (and some service should have several passwords) and it’s impossible for the average person to keep track of all of those. Every time I hear about someone losing control of an account it’s because they were using the same password as another service.

I recommend:

  • KeePassDX: Can be completely offline. Probably the most secure but can be a little awkward to use sometimes.
  • Bitwarden: Cloud based but open source. You could run a server but the main service offers MOST of the features for free.

Your mileage may very with some of the proprietary platforms. However my job uses 1 Password and it seems to be fairly safe.

This is not a violation of the GPL. They are allowed to charge for access to the source. If you provide binaries/images to a customer, you also must provide source. However, anyone who doesn’t pay isn’t entitled to it.

However, this is still a total bonehead move.
