I actually trust Microsoft far more than I trust Google. I use Outlook as my main email provider and Edge for when I need something that rejects Firefox.

Besides trust, Edge just feels snappier on Linux than Chrome. Chrome is so bloaty theses days.

The classic idea that someone’s hairstyle can be more disruptive than harassing a student and suspending them. This comes down to racism plain and simple.

Did we kill Linux's killer feature?

A few years ago we were able to upgrade everything (OS and Apps) using a single command. I remember this was something we boasted about when talking to Windows and Mac fans. It was such an amazing feature. Something that users of proprietary systems hadn’t even heard about. We had this on desktops before things like Apple’s...

It’s wild what can be done with some clever aliases. Linux is better now than ever before.

They did that in a McD near where I live. Before, when I wanted a refill I would:

  • Get a refill

Clearly we can make this process better. Now at the newly remodeled McD it’s as simple as:

  • Wait at the counter to get an overworked employees attention
  • Tell them you want a refill
  • Throw your entire cup away in the trash
  • Wait for your replacement drink

Linux can be used at your workplaces (lemmy.ml)

I’m just tired. On the last post about having Linux at our work, many people that seems to be an IT worker said there have been several issues with Linux that was not easy to manipulate or control like they do with Windows, but I think they just are lazy to find out ways to provide this support. Because Google forces all their...

I work for a small company and I run Linux for work without issues. However we’re small enough that we don’t have an IT department. Most of our tools are web tools or are platform independent.

In contrast my girlfriend’s company uses Windows over a remote connection via thin client. It’s a high security job though most of her work is in Microsoft Office and SharePoint.

Setting her job up with only Linux would be a million times harder.

I have Guake for passive tasks like music payback or anytime I want a full screen terminal to hold my focus, like when I’m writing in Neovim.

Tillix is my active terminal. Taking notes, active chat sessions, or running a SSH connection. Anything that I want on screen permanently.

Amount of RJ45 Ports on Home Server?

I’m in the process of designing a home server and am curious how many ethernet ports are required at minimum and how many people recommend. The single board computer (SBC) I plan to use has two built in and has a pcie slot to add four more if necessary. If I don’t need the four extra I’d like to use the pcie slot for a...

Remember a homelab can be anything from multiple rack mounts humming along in your basement to just SBC running some clever Podman containers. Everyone’s wants, needs, and interests are different.

Sounds like most of what you want to do could be done with one or two machines, a decent switch, and some kind of Wi-Fi access point. There is no wrong or right way to do it.

It’s a little dance called capitalism:

  1. Company becomes publicly traded.
  2. Shareholders invest in the company.
  3. The company aims to maximize profit.
  4. Growth eventually slows down because almost everyone who could use the company’s services already does.
  5. Shareholders expect returns on their investment.
  6. To increase revenue, the company must either raise prices for customers or reduce operating expenses.

Adsense was made in 2003. That’s when Google entered the ad industry. Chrome was released in beta in 2008. That’s 5 years of being an ad agency before creating Chrome.

I have an older Samsung Tab 6 and I love it. The stylus is wonderful for drawing and painting, the screen and speakers make it great for watching movies on vacation, and the battery lasts all day.

You can install a real desktop style browser and terminal. That makes it easy to get real work done.

My experience has been so good that’ll probably upgrade this at the end of the year. I still have my laptop, and that’s my main go to device for getting things done but the tablet is just effortless.

does anyone else find street performers particularly annoying?

Not musicians, the worse the better for me, Iove a panpipe or a one man band. Just anyone juggling or creating slip hazards with litres of fucking bubble mixture. Mimes can fuck right off as well, as can cocks on unicycles. Fire eaters are boring, fire juggling is boring and annoying

Somehow you’ve gotten your dream home. The cabin in the mountains, penthouse downtown, castle nestled deep in the woods, nuclear bunker in the hills, or whatever. I have used Chromebooks as Linux laptops for a while now. Here are some patterns I’ve seen.

  • Some Intel audio chipsets don’t work. Not sure why that is but it’s happened on two different Chromebooks.
  • Chromebooks have some of the best wifi under Linux
  • Some ARM Chromebooks have locked bootloaders
  • Most that I’ve seen that are EOL only have 16GB of non upgradable storage

Currently running a cheap Chromebook I bought from Best Buy for $30. Works great but no audio. ¯\ಠಠ_/¯

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

In the US a lot of business use them. It’s not uncommon to see a pallet of “old” ThinkPads at the swapmeet selling for less than $200. We’re talking x1 Carbons. These machines have upgradable SSDs, Wifi, and battery. For less than $300 you can get a BEAST of a machine that runs Linux very very well.

If you install just some vanilla Linux distro, that won’t work.

My Surface 3 Pro with Debian Stable would disagree. The Gnome desktop does pretty good without a keyboard.

I don’t see the problem with that. The difference is you pay instead of being served YouTube pre-roll ads. And they get a bigger cut than it would off of YouTube premium.

As many hours as it takes to make a video It’s kind of amazing some people upload different versions on each platform, they don’t really have to.

As someone who’s cut a lot of videos, at best that’s a maybe. Depends on the video, depends on the workflow, there’s a lot more to it sometimes.

Question for software developers: how do you organize your To Do list at work?

I’m asking because I’m wondering if there’s a more efficient way for me to handle my notes at work. Currently I just use a txt file in Notepad++.
