meyotch,

In this and other situations involving trees, it’s all about the terps!

meyotch,

It’s all about the merchandising! Your ‘dumb money brain’ is shared by many. They are selling an emotional product represented by a cheap trinket or gee-gaw. Retail psychology is really interesting

meyotch,

I kept watching and he just kept getting smoother!

meyotch,

Your systemd file looks ok, but I think it’s doing exactly what you are telling it.

The solution may lie in the backup.service. Is that code you can modify? The OnCalendar=weekly doesn’t specify when in the week the service should run so that config may be vague.

If I understand the desired function here, you will need the service up all the time. It will just wait politely and occasionally run the specific backup script. It’s up to the backup script to determine when the last backup was made and either exit early because it hasn’t been a week or run the backup and reset a flag file.

At least that’s the approach I would take. Systemd is a very vigilant, but very stupid, service manager. It just watches and triggers services based on just a few criteria. Any logic more complex needs to go in the service itself.

meyotch,

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

I am a better person because of my non-belief than I ever was as a believer-by-default due to my upbringing in a cult.

If this is it, what are you doing right now to make the best of it? Belief encourages moral laziness and the ultimate procrastination of waiting till the next life to address problems that exist here and now.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

meyotch,

I have become a little active in my county party. Trying to learn the Democratic way of doing things (first impressions: no one is in charge). Hoping to be able to use my database and reporting skills to help improve the ground game for 2024.

meyotch,

I draw the line at being the middle of no more than five people. Otherwise it gets weird.

meyotch,

I think Nu Trek is ready for Rowan Atkinson to do a bit as that Vulcan. They might have to lower decks this one, but I want to see Mr Bean deal with a subspace anomaly.

meyotch,

A solarpunk future will need more plants of all kinds. I’m building and testing a (solar-powered naturally) temporary immersion bioreactor (TIB) that is suitable for mass propagation of numerous different plant species.

TIB are especially suited for multiplication of woody species. I don’t think anyone would disagree that a massive tree planting effort will require efficient ways to produce saplings.

meyotch,

Ahh, a member of the Tina Belcher school of romance!

meyotch,

Mormon corporate pre-school pablum. The faithful eat this stuff up though.

If you are reliable and consistent, people will trust you? Amazing insights! /s

meyotch,

Pressure must be applied from many sources for real change to occur. Ballot power, media power, people power, any lever we can find. We should not fault others for passionately pursuing the changes they can make. This is a war with many fronts.

meyotch,

The feeling of power I get from being the first upvote on a post in new, then seeing it later in top? Intoxicating!

meyotch,

Good times, noodle salad.

meyotch,

Three days of a general strike would suffice.

meyotch,

So, does that mean like ‘no worries, forever’?

meyotch,

I will touch this guy . . .

meyotch,

“Tell me about a time . . .”

Gives me the shakes

meyotch,

It’s really fun to say once you get the hang of it.

meyotch,

Thanks for clarifying. The original comment was ambiguous. But it’s true, any revolution we achieve will still be influenced by the old systems for good and ill.

It’s why I get kind of tired of political theory discussions because so many of them assume starting with a clean slate, which will never happen. Once the slate is cleaned well we aren’t around to build anything else.

meyotch,

Dang that was a good soundtrack for a classically silly game. Thanks for the nostalgia.

meyotch,

I too press keys in response to pixel patterns on a screen, hoping the presses yield new patterns that look pretty to others.

The syndrome is real. Undiagnosed ADHD until 42 and a hell of a time getting correctly treated thereafter. Im in therapy again because doing so very well after years of anxiety and depression is itself very disorienting.

Just know you aren’t alone in feeling like an imposter sometimes. You are also a survivor and are stronger than you will ever get credit for, unless you grant the credit to yourself!

meyotch,

H4H works very well for very well qualified and motivated people. Im so glad you were able to make it work.

meyotch,

“You see? No one cares!”

meyotch,

Here’s the thing: it’s usually both!

meyotch,

I don’t want to talk over the original comment, but I believe they were speaking specifically of delta-v, which is ‘change in velocity’. So you have to burn more fuel to visit the sun than you need to go the other way and leave the solar system.

meyotch,

It is a practical gospel of hope. I work in tech and I hate what we have done with tech. Let’s do better! This is the opposite of dropping out, it is digging in and making positive change informed by a humane and rational value system.

So, no, not hippie redux. But any old hippies are certainly welcome.

Dungeons & Dragons to Bring Adventure (and Funding) to 200 High-Needs Classrooms (www.superherohype.com)

In a press release today, Wizards of the Coast detailed its plan to aid classrooms through a partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org. Through an application on the AdoptAClassroom website, teachers can apply to receive one of 200 $100 rewards to pay for expenses in 4-12 grade classrooms. Winners also receive an official D&D...

meyotch,

Yes, that is a good topic to introduce. These things don’t just happen. Small powerful groups of people take it upon themselves to keep things the way they want them.

meyotch,

I can’t disagree with your take at all. It is a very multifaceted issue

meyotch,

Well my response was pretty glib and painted with a very broad brush. You used a finer brush to paint your picture.

Frankly, I think both views have merit. There were good results from patronage of the rich, but I hate seeing them used as justification for the continued deification of the rich.

meyotch,

It’s a taste of the real world need we have for second-order relationships, i.e. neighbors. I grew up in a close knit homogeneous small town three hours drive from the nearest proper metro area. It was simultaneously suffocating and comforting to have real neighbors.

I recently became active in precinct-level party politics (im in USA) precisely to meet some IRL neighbors. I stick around lemmy for an online taste of the same thing. It fills a basic social need.

Hi, neighbors!

meyotch,

I’m from the US west and I have always loved these birds in particular. The local rural culture kind of hates them for some reason but I fell in love with them for their beauty. The flash of color and patterns when they take sudden flight is captivating.

meyotch,

I feel you. My level of uncaring is almost aggressive. Don’t try to make me care!

meyotch,

I had a Japanese boss tell me the state religion of Japan is “being Japanese”. That struck me as being so very true during my few months living there.

meyotch,

Feeld has been really good for me compared to other apps. Im a relatively vanilla fellow but the culture around communication is stronger there and the results have been good. And Ive only been using it for single dating so far.

Hope it rolls out for you soon because it has been a refreshing experience

meyotch,

Then enjoy your fourties while the parents get ground down by the unreasonable burdens of raising kids.

meyotch,

They are circling, bo-bandy. Look, I’m mowing the air!

meyotch,

Not much love here for the Pi Zero W. I love them for being so flipping cute. I have a couple I use when I am learning a new system admin tool or service and I need to be able to let it run undisturbed to observe stability and function.

Lately I am learning MQTT so am using one as a broker to manage some homemade smart devices.

If I can ever find one in stock, i want a couple of Zero 2 for similar projects that would benefit from the extra oomph.

meyotch,

Enragement is hard to distinguish from engagement and most creators of algorithms don’t seem to particularly care about the difference. Some creators DO know the difference and still choose the dark side. It’s shitheads all the way down.

meyotch,

“People who help people are the Lemmiest people in the world!”

meyotch,

If you don’t get ‘woke’ I question the sincerity of your entire belief system. ‘Woke’ just means ‘aware of systemic injustices’. If you aren’t aware, how can you be ‘left’ or even liberal?

meyotch,

Then those actual conservatives need to do the hard work and actually rein in their wacko cousins.

meyotch,

Stop! I can only become so aroused and I have work to do!
