The Online News Act Is in Force. How We Got Here, What’s Next ( thetyee.ca )

Journalists and news consumers can exhale. Canadian news will not be blocked on Google, at least not any time soon. But another digital giant, Mark Zuckerberg’s $840-billion Meta, remains defiant in stripping Canadian news from its Facebook and Instagram....

This is hilarious … government won’t control or regulate social media because they don’t provide the news

Yet everyone suffers from lack of news delivery because it’s all being delivered by social media companies

Everyone keeps dancing around the question of Social Media yet no one wants to address the elephant in the room … the elephant that is blocking out the sun, the sky, ate our lunch and just shat on the table

Social media is our modern day newspaper … regulate it like a newspaper, or a magazine, or a cable television provider

How would everyone feel if they knew there were only two major newspapers in the country, two daily newspapers that everyone used to publish and push all their content, advertising and user contributions, only two daily papers that held all the information that everyone in the country read

I hope those stupid Ojeeboos don’t make Chewbacca speak in Cree

In case any of you are wondering, I’m northern Ontario Ojibwe/Cree with family up in Hudson Bay who are more Cree than Ojibwe. I speak my language and it was the first language I learned growing up before English. Up there we call the Ojibwe and Ojibway … Ojeeboo, it’s the Cree pronunciation of the word

I love the idea of any film being made into a Native language but it will be a huge problem for so many people. There are dozens of dialects of Cree and Ojibway across from northern Ontario, Manitoba and all around the Great Lakes with so many variations of the language that it’s hard to find agreement in language variations among anyone.

It will be like saying you are going to make a Latin version of Stars Wars … but a Latin version from a thousand years ago when it closely ressembled French, Spanish and Italian … but you’re only going to use a Latin dialect from a small region in the south of France.

Never underestimate your opponent, especially a stranger in the public you’ve never met before.

I have a friend who is a retired military police officer. He is built like a tank, tall muscular and intimidating.

He’s the one who taught me never to underestimate anyone. He man handled, beat and fought countless people. But he also admitted that he’d been beaten bruised and hospitalized by people shorter and weaker than him.

When you fight someone in public, you never know who you’re dealing with … he could be an untrained jerk like you and me … or they could be a 150 lb MMA fighter and highly trained martial artist with expert training.

Or the person you’re fighting could have a knife, a pencil, a screwdriver, a piece of glass or their friend or friends you didn’t see or believed wouldn’t interfere all jump you and beat you to a pulp.

It’s getting weird out there.

I deal with a few bureaucrats and office workers. Up until about a year ago, their emails were pretty simple and they sounded a lot like someone just tapped them out while on the toilet.

Now they sound robotic and machine like. Very polite, to the point, concise and very professional. A year ago these people would just ask a vague question and not really know what to say.

Now they’ve automatically become professional writers sending me a polite note.

It’s good … but it just makes me wonder where all this is going.

It’s putting lipstick on a pig … no matter how much you dress it up, it’s still a pig that likes to eat garbage and cover itself in mud.

A thin crust pizza is just a small pizza stretched out to the size of a larger pizza … it’s paying for a large pizza while asking for a small pizza.

I tell this to my wife all the time but she still loves her thin crust pizza.

ininewcrow ,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

We’re spoiled … we’ve had actual Neapolitan pizza that was baked in a traditional stone oven in Italy made with carefully prepared dough, fresh ingredients and thick heavy tasty mozzarella and a big ball of bufala campana cheese in the center … pizza so thin, light and tasty that you can eat a whole one yourself and its a proper sized meal … my wife and I both had it and that is the constant standard she is after when she orders those thin crust pizzas here in northern Ontario Canada. I keep telling her that we have to go to the city to find anything remotely like the real Italian stuff and we’ll never get it anywhere else … yet we still keep ordering thin crust pizza hoping that some day some Italian will just make us a real pizza one day and make it for us.

So it’s no longer a cost/benefit thing … just a nostalgia about pizzas past.

Anyone who doesn’t understand that connecting in any way to Facebook is not a good thing … is either very naive, or complicit to wanting to take down the fediverse.

Facebook already has enough content and enough of a platform on their own – they literally control half of the worldwide social media network. Why do they want to spread into this new space?

The only reason they want to be on this side is to conquer or destroy.

ininewcrow , (edited )
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

Normally and with very many other issues … I would agree with you … but on this issue I’m very adamant about what I see and believe.

Think about it … Facebook is a billion dollar corporation and they show interest in your little world and the little things you are doing and they want to join you. This is a company that already has billions invested in systems that already have billions of users and millions of dollars of man power and technological resources. Why do they want to step into what we are doing here? Why do they feel a need to step into our space? Do they need more users? Do they need help from us?

Big corporations are only interested in perpetual growth at all costs. They are also deathly afraid of competition or the potential of future competition. Look at the history of manufacturing, automotive corporations over the past hundred years … it’s a long history of the strong eating the weak.

I agree my argument may sound childish or extreme but in this instance it’s pretty clear … if you let them in, it’s basically the beginning of the end for the fediverse.

It’s the metaphorical Trojan Horse … once it’s inside and firmly established, everything will be lost.

ininewcrow ,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s a type of squashing … they step in, take over, control it and the whole thing becomes something that is beyond our control and becomes another platform that is operated by a private corporation to manipulate and manage thought, content and private freedoms. Basically squashing the Fediverse that we originally wanted to exist.

Once a major powerful corporation steps in and is given access … it’s like allowing a local gang member in your town to use your living room to deal drugs … at first you get some benefits but eventually, they’ll take over your house, throw you out and tell you go somewhere else because you don’t own the house any more, no matter what anyone says.

ininewcrow ,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

yes not presently … but one an entity like Meta becomes the dominant system in this universe, eventually, they will build all the keys and controls to regulate it all … that’s the point when they will lock out whoever they want

this is like the debate with climate change … no one really understands what’s going to happen in a few decades so we don’t care … when in reality, the time to do something about some future catastrophe is now … it’s the same thing with the fediverse, don’t allow big corporations in now, because we won’t be able to do anything about it later when they’ve overwhelmed everything.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads ( kbin.social )

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

The fediverse is an obvious threat to Facebook and any other corporate social media company. If the fediverse wasn’t a threat or has the potential of ever one day becoming a threat … then companies like Facebook would not want anything to do with the fediverse.

The fact that a major social media company like Facebook even remotely wants anything to do with the fediverse means that this new start up is doing something and has the potential of becoming something some day. Otherwise, Facebook would not want anything to do with it.

Besides, Facebook already has a huge market share of the social media pie … they literally control over half the social media content on the internet right now. They already have more than enough of a platform to connect to their userbase … why should we allow them onto our space? We need the content … they don’t.

And like others have said, if you allow a big fish onto your small pond, the big fish will automatically control everything. The big fish will swim around your little pool for a while and kill everything and then leave, leaving an empty pool that nobody wants.

Admit it … Facebook just wants in to kill the fediverse. They don’t want to add it to their service, they don’t want to incorporate it … they want to swallow it whole, let it die and abandon it.

Defederate and don’t let them anywhere near our space. Otherwise, we’ll be signing our own death warrant.

A solution would be to have a large group of journalists band together and create their own independent media company that they control and produce their own content under their own control and away from private corporations or companies. Then have government support them as much as they support private media companies that literally just control journalists.

Journalists should be free to report on anything, everything and everyone (no matter how powerful or wealthy) in an objective way without threat of any kind … as soon as that is lost, you know that democracy is next in line to disappear.

What is this medieval Europe? So the argument against a ceasefire is to just keep bombing, killing, rounding up people, destroying buildings and basically bombing everything to nothing is the answer.

It’s not just for Israel … it’s a showcase for the world … if Israel can get away with conducting a war in whatever way they please, what is to stop others from doing the same? Without rule of international law equally applied to everyone … what’s to stop others from starting the same thing?

If the war and killing and bombing just continues unabated … then we are no better than our ancestors a thousand years ago. We may have progressed technologically but we’ve hardly evolved from our war like, fearful, and short sighted ancient mentality.

Watching the birth of the general public internet that everyone has access to.

I remember the early 90s hearing people talk about it, then seeing signs of it in the mid 90s. We all thought it was going to make the world so much better for everything and everyone.

Then starting in the late 90s everyone was getting online and it just went crazy.

It was exciting to be around for the start of it all.

We got to live life without an internet and then all of sudden it was here and we couldn’t live without it.

It was like being the generation that saw the first airplanes and commercial aviation becoming part of the world.

ininewcrow ,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

The internet … I’ve mentioned this before and whenever I suggest the internet started in the 90s, I get corrected that technically it was started in the 80s or even the 70s. I’m talking about the general internet that the public interacted with, the internet in the 90s that we all know and understand, the internet with cat memes and porn.
