You didn’t even need to do that. Just identify yourself as one, pick a girl’s name you like and everyone has to go along with it for fear of being labelled transphobic.
IPO = Initial Public Offering, where shareholders offer to sell their shares to the public, shifting a company from a “private company” (it belongs to me, you, and that guy) to a “public company” (it belongs to anyone who pays enough for the shares)....
I think it started out with a rare case of honest advertising. So for example 720K floppies were advertised as 720K. But then some lying bastard clever marketer decided to start advertising their 720K floppies as 1MB floppies, sometimes but not always marked “unformatted capacity”.
And of course this had the desired effect of making people buy their disks instead of the honestly marketed ones, because people didn’t read the small print and thought they were getting more storage, which was important before CDs were a thing and software distributions were starting to need multiple disks. So everyone had to start doing it.
This is as far back as my memory of the practice goes, so it may have started before 720K floppies were mainstream, but that’s why disk manufacturers now advertise the unformatted capacity of their drives instead of the formatted, aka usable, capacity.
For centuries. Justification: Jesus was dead for three days: from Friday afternoon (3pm?), day 1, through Saturday, day 2, and into Sunday early morning (6am?), day 3. Total elapsed time 39 hours. Digital computers were around last century (19xx) and this century (20xx), which is two centuries by the same logic. Also two millenia, but I find “centuries” a more satisfying word. Colossus went into operation in 1943, so that’s 80 years elapsed time.
(a) because it’s too expensive, and (b) it didn’t take a lot of DDGing to find “why am I still getting ads with YT Premium” and it turns out there are a bunch of exceptions that the YTP page doesn’t tell you about.
Your best focus at the moment is your degree, including during the holidays. You can Linux fanboi all you like after you’ve graduated, unless you’ve got some really strong personal convictions that push you in that direction, and it seems you haven’t otherwise you’d already be there.
For me it was “buy high quality pillow” because you sleep for one thrid of a day etc. I needed a new pillow anyway so I came to the store and bought the best they had. And it was … ok. Like it’s a fine pillow but my sleeping haven’t improved really, it’s basically the same. So I was disapointed :(...
I raised the possibility of buying a Subaru with my local mechanic and he described me as “brave”. He mentioned that the ridiculously high prices for fixing up my Merc (like £600 for a hosepipe) would be peanuts compared to Subaru repairs, and that’s assuming he could even get the parts. So I got another Volvo.
I can’t get a car I would like for just £24K. The cars I buy 2nd hand for £5K would have cost north of £40K when they were new. Sure I could get some shitty half litre shoebox on wheels for £24K that needs three weeks’ written notice for acceleration to 60mph but I’d absolutely hate it. Plus when the engine goes boom replacing the whole car is a lot easier to stomach when it only cost 5K as opposed to 40K.
Hamad said that Palestinians are the victims of the occupation, therefore no one should blame them for the events of October 7 or anything else, adding: “Everything we do is justified.”
Still the Jews innit, cos of Exodus 3:10 “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.”
That’s OK, I won’t hold it against you. What’s your source for the two kingdoms 3000 years ago, and does that source talk about how they entered the land? Was the land empty and unused/unclaimed or were there other people living there?
I’ve never been able to see the point of repeated ads. If I didn’t want the thing 30 seconds ago I’m still not going to want it now. PTL for 30s jump forward, not even fastforwarding ads these days.
There is waste and byproduct, just not in your kitchen. Look into the manufacturing process. There are still beans that are roasted, ground, brewed and discarded.
Context is important. It’s a song of imagined - and not executed - revenge. The writer is wishing that what happened to their kids also happened to the invaders kids. The Babylonians dashed Jewish kids against rocks, and the Jews didn’t respond in kind - couldn’t in fact, because the Law forbade it.
There are tricks like that for a lot of numbers. For 7, chop off the last digit, double it and add it to what’s left. Repeat as required. If the result is divisible by 7 then the original number was. eg: 356 -> 35+12=47 not db7. 357 =>35+14 both db7 so we don’t even need to do the add.
Jews living in other communities has been tried and generally found not to work; it might be OK for a while but eventually they get scapegoated, persecuted, and in one extreme case sent to not exactly a holiday camp in Auschwitz. So they need a land of their own. Where though is the question, because there isn’t much usable land on this planet that hasn’t been claimed by someone, so those people are going to be displaced, some more willingly than others. Personally I think since the USA are their biggest fans they should get one of those 50 states to themselves, and it’d be a lot cheaper to just buy out everyone in the state than to keep trying to keep Israel safe from all the enemies that currently surround them, but what do I know.
It did in the UK. Not only did we ban guns, we also made carrying them a criminal offence. Nobody, not even crims, now casually carries guns around, because they know if they get stopped and searched, and the gun is found, they’re heading straight to the clink. So the only people that carry guns are (a) the few that have a genuine reason to, like airport security, and (b) crims carrying with intent, and the latter can get chucked into the clink directly with the gun carrying being direct proof of that intent.
But you go on believing gun control doesn’t solve these problems if you want. The evidence from everyone else that has tried it is that (a) it works and (b) we’re not going to throw our gun control out on the grounds of it being useless, because it isn’t. Of course it doesn’t solve the problem 110% and there are OCCASIONAL, SURPRISING news reports about a shooting, not the routine business it is in the USA.
And your comment about combatting the bourgeois is just ridiculous. they’ll just come after you with a bigger gun and more security than you can shake a stick at. Sure you might pop something off at one of them but the rest’ll blow your arse away in no time.
This argument is hardly worth having anyway. Once America decided guns were more important than kids’ lives the gun lobby won. When you’ve decided kids are more important than guns we can talk further.
Two more than me. I did start watching Westworld but it was too gruesome. It’s a shame that programs with good storylines have to ruin it with too much gratuity.

This relates to the BBC article [www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66596790] which states “the UK should pay $24tn (£18.8tn) for its slavery involvement in 14 countries”....
Correct. I put too few 0’s in. I have no chance of paying anyone half a million. Those aren’t reparations, that’s a kind of reverse slavery. Also I divided by the number of taxpayers (31.6m), not the total population, because it’s going to be the taxpayer muggins who has to foot the bill.
My wife and I started talking about this after she had to help an old lady at the DMV figure out how to use her iPhone to scan a QR code. We're in our early 40s.
Of course, there will be a range in all generations from those who ignore technology altogether and who will inevitably be bad at it, to those who keep on top of every change and continue to be skilled users of that technology.
I don’t see why there would be a difference from one generation to the next. The proportions might be different: boomers and GenX who saw this stuff come in later in life and who know there is more to life than technology might be more inclined to spend their time away from that tech than later generations that grew up with this stuff. Or maybe the later generations will want to get away from it and rediscover nature.
I suspect that if and when retirement happens I’ll (GenX) be spending a lot of time away from computers.
People with essential tremor perhaps? There is ZERO point me trying to scan something with a handheld scanner because it’s a blurred mess every time. Flatbed all the way. Or perhaps a tripod mount for the handheld scanner.
Don’t think I’ve ever had a proper FTS moment in my career but the closest was during Covid, before any vaccine had come out and the company mandated RTO. Did the science and worked out I had about 25% chance of DYING if I caught it. I was it wasn’t going to happen, they said yes it was, bit of to and fro then they said “disciplinary” so I said well let’s cut out all the unpleasantness and just go for a mutual agreement. Got three months pay and walked out at the end of the week, shortly afterwards landing another job with a substantial pay rise and 100% WFH.
I had a proper FTS moment in an interview, which the company failed with flying colours. It’s a good job it was a mile walk back to the railway station because if I’d spoken to the agent before that walk (which took about 3 minutes) I’d have said something a lot ruder than FTS.
