jcrabapple,

I was 10 when the Cranberries released "Dreams". I remember the first time I heard it on my dad's fancy stereo in my parent's basement. I was fascinated from the moment I heard that opening guitar chord. This song ended up on many of my mix tapes (and later mix CDs) throughout the 90s. Still to this day it makes me feel like I'm at home sitting on the floor listening to the radio.

jcrabapple,

So Much For The Afterglow reminds of me driving around in my car with my high school friends, trying to stay out of trouble lol.

jcrabapple,

It's the best Chromium browser. Company seems like it's run by decent people who listen to their users.

jcrabapple,

Personally I would pass away and die.

jcrabapple,

Love this band. I can't believe this album is a decade old.

jcrabapple,

Lauren has a solo album and solo tour coming up!

jcrabapple,

Have kids! They'll make you feel old when they call the music you grew up with "oldies" or "classic rock".

jcrabapple,

Smaller instances won't have a lot of the issues that the main instance has. I run one at https://dmv.pub. DMV being the DC/Maryland/Virginia region but anyone is welcome to join.

What's the best app for Youtube right now?

Years ago I used NewPipe but when I wanted a little more from my app I switched the ReVanced until it started giving me more and more issues. For the past 3 months or so I’ve been using a cracked Youtube Premium app, but now it’s dropping every video after about a minute. So what’s everyone using these days to avoid all of...

jcrabapple,

This is what I use. Works great!

jcrabapple,

I hope they fix the bug where detailed notifications don't work.

jcrabapple,

That doesn't seem to be what is happening at all...

jcrabapple,

Double my salary, then we'll talk.

jcrabapple,

We use it liberally but we are encouraged to do so.

Linux distro for gaming

I know this has probably been asked before but I am currently using Arch and wondering if my choice is the best for gaming. What are the thoughts from the community? I have an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 64 gigs of RAM and a decent AMD GPU. Gaming seems to be okay on Arch but I am wondering if I’ve overlooked something better....

jcrabapple,

Nobara. It's Fedora modified and tweaked for gaming.

jcrabapple,

Florida is a shithole of hatred and bigotry. If we're still building that border wall we should build it across the Florida border.

jcrabapple,

I had every Nexus except for the 5, and every Pixel except for the 5. I've had really good luck with them all. Only problem I had was after about a year the wireless charging stopped working on my Pixel 4 XL. I've handed down almost every single phone to either my parents or my kids after at least a year of use and they continue to last a few more years. I can't recall one ever dying. I swear by them.

jcrabapple,

Artemis is starting out as a Kbin app, but the developer is adding Lemmy support as well.

jcrabapple,

I used to try and self host RSS but all of them had something I didn't like so now I pay $5/month for Feedbin and I've ever been happier. Works great with Focus Reader on Android.

Curious, how many users here actually use ActivityPub's capabilities to see other social media sites?

I’ve always wondered how many people actually decide to use something like mastodon to see Lemmy posts. I mean I know how inadequate it can be with a lack of a proper UI but I’m just wondering. Especially, with the infinite possibilities this can have.

jcrabapple,

This is one of the best things about Kbin!

jcrabapple,

I started paying for Kagi a few months ago and I'm loving it. Search results and tools are great. People balk at paying for a search engine, but at least this way I know I'm not the product.

jcrabapple,

I've been an early adopter subscribe for months and I'm loving it. The tools available make searching easier and so much more useful.

jcrabapple,

Target. Best Buy. Walmart, if I have to. The Shop app is pretty good.

jcrabapple,

Dude's personal life is a mess but you can't deny his amazing talent. It's good to see he's back with a new album. Hopefully he stays clean and healthy.

jcrabapple,

Vessel from Sleep Token

jcrabapple,

Yeah if you listen to the albums in order you can hear the growth and the maturation of his voice. Really impressive vocalist.

jcrabapple,

This is what happens when you launch with no content discovery features, so you have to whore yourself out and follow anyone and everyone if you want to get any attention. "Content creators" and clout chasers are the primary customer of this service, so without that I don't know why they'd want to use it.

jcrabapple,

No hashtags, no full text search. Just an algorithmic feed and a following feed, and you can only search users.

jcrabapple,

I switched to Firefox/Librewolf (with a brief stint on Vivaldi) last year and haven't looked back.

jcrabapple,

Looks fantastic. Nice and clean.

Want to move on from Mastodon, but so confused on what platform to choose (kbin.social)

Recently I've dove a little deeper into the Fediverse. I began with Mastodon like many others and I'm ready to move on. Mastodon as a software in comparison to similar services in the Fediverse like Calckey/Firefish, Friendica, Misskey, etc. just isn't as good and the only thing it has going for it is an established user base...

jcrabapple,

CalcKey just rebranded to Firefish. It has a very pretty UI but UX is currently bad as there is no way to globally disable boosts so you will see the same posts in your timeline over and over and over again. Following hashtags is limited to the Antennas feature so you won't see those posts in your timeline. Until they fix these things it's unusable for me personally.

Have you tried Akkoma or Pleroma? I run an Akkoma instance at https://shrediverse.net if you want to try it out. You can use the web app or an app like Fedilab on Android.

Have you tried other ways of viewing Mastodon? Different web apps or mobile apps? Like https://elk.zone , https://phanpy.social , https://semaphore.social.

jcrabapple,

The fediverse has made social networking fun again.

jcrabapple,

Sonarr, Radarr, Sabnzbd, Plex, Overseer, Mastodon, Kbin, Pixelfed, Mattermost

jcrabapple,

I have noticed my instance dmv.pub eventually seems to stop federating (or stop pulling in federated content) at some point, and won't start again until I restart it. Then it immediately pulls everything in. I need to track down the time when it stops federating and check the logs.

jcrabapple,

Currently, AT protocol is mostly theoretical because it's newer and a lot of things haven't been implemented yet . ActivityPub is much more widespread, but some of the ideas for AT protocol would be great in ActivityPub, like better account portability.

jcrabapple,

Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way.

Eigengrau, to kbinMeta
@Eigengrau@kbin.social avatar

Probably controversial opinion , but kbin should stay mascotless

#kbinMeta

jcrabapple,

@Eigengrau Mascots are fun, and if it means the project can sell merch like stickers, etc. and make a little money to support the project and its developers then I'm all for it
