Well I’m self advertising a little bit but I’m a mod of a few communities.

  • !gay : I didn’t create this community or even ask to be a mod of it. The previous owner just randomly added me one day without ever talking to me (or posting anything) and then removed himself. Still bewildered by that. So it says /c/Gay but it is for LGBTQ+ folks in general. I’m also very protective of my trans homies and don’t take shit from bigots.
  • !startrekmemes : I did create this one as an alternative to Risa as Risa doesn’t have any listed rules. StarTrekMemes does. Same thing applies in the sense that I really don’t tolerate bigotry and love Trek with all of my little gay heart. I believe in Trek. The ideals that it inspires and beholds I also behold.
  • !memes : A full and robust moderation team who also don’t take shit. However this community is larger so things can be a bit rough around the edges. Please do report anything that you see if you believe it doesn’t belong or violates the rules and a mod will get to it as soon as possible.

I do moderate another community but it’s very dark humor that can be very triggering for some people and I don’t want to cause issues on that front. Wanted to really make that clear before I said what it was which is !2meirl4meirl.

He was part of a team that created devices allowing people to play what they wanted on switch, 3DS and some other consoles. He was convicted of fraud and imprisoned for two years before being released. He still has to pay off a fine of 10 million dollars so Nintendo is garnishing his wages for the rest of his life. Which pisses me off because he’s on Disability in Canada which is barely enough to live on (trust me…) and also taxpayer funds. Not to mention that there is no way in fucking hell that his part in all of this adds up to $10 million dollars in lost revenue for Nintendo which is exactly why that fine was applied.

Edit: Apparently disability can’t be garnished. Was a slight fuck up on my end. I had misremembered something and misread something which led to that. Nonetheless, situation still massively fucked for applying a $10 million (well, 14.5 million but 10 million of that is for Nintendo) fine for a dude who made $320,000 off of the hacks. However if he did make any money outside of Disability, they would immediately be entitled to 30% of it. Fucking insane.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, what’s weird is for you to openly lie and make shit up for no reason.

He made $320,000 over a 7 year period.

Source.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

So you have no sources other than what you think?

Yeah I’m going to stick with the documents that were shown in legal proceedings, thanks.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

It was put through the American Legal system. There is absolutely zero reason to believe that the justice system of America actually contains any justice in the first place. Of course they sided with the international corporation to fuck over a disabled 50 year old.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

So… again… you have no sources other than what you think? Either offer sources that back up your claims or stop making comments that are immediately proven false.

I also did believe that they could because I misread something. That’s on me and has been edited. Next time I would also recommend trying to correct someone by acting like an adult instead of whatever this behavior is. Sorry about the mistake but you really could have addressed that with a very different attitude.

Lastly, the actual issue is a misrepresentation on how much lost revenue Nintendo gained from this man. Piracy is a factor. It is not the driving force.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

He actually lives in Canada. Your comment still applies overall as it is not feasible to live adequately on disability here but he’s not in the US.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Canadians serving in US Prisons isn’t unheard of. We do have an extradition treaty to the US. Not one that I’m okay with as fuck being beholden to American laws while never stepping foot in the country. However he wasn’t even in Canada. He was in the Dominican Republic at the time that he was caught. He was extradited from there to the United States where he served 2 years before being released and repatriated back to Canada.

Most likely rogue AI scenario

Doubt.jpg

We don’t have any data to base such a likelihood off of in the first place.

Stamets, (edited )
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

This makes a lot of assumptions though and none of which are ones that I particularly agree with.

First off, this is predicated entirely off of the assumption that AI is going to think like humans, have the same reasoning as humans/corporations and have the same goals/drive that corporations do.

Since we cannot gather data on this, we must rely on the inferior method of using naive models to predict future behavior.

This does pull the entire argument into question though. It relies on simple models to try and predict something that doesn’t even exist yet. That is inherently unreliable when it comes to its results. It’s hard to guess the future when you won’t know what it looks like.

Decision Theory

Decision Theory has one major drawback which is that it’s based entirely off of past events and does not take random chance or unknown-knowns into account. You cannot focus and rely on “expected variations” in something that has never existed. The weather cannot be adequately predicted three days out because of minor variables that can impact things drastically. A theory that doesn’t even take into account variables simply won’t be able to come close to predicting something as complex and unimaginable as artificial intelligence, sentience and sapience.

Like I said.

Doubt.jpg

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Why do you think that? What part of what I said made you come to that conclusion?

I worded that badly. It should more accurately say “it’s heavily predicated on the assumption that AI will act in a very particular way thanks to the narrow scope of human logic and comprehension.” It still does sort of apply though due to the below quote:

we can conclude that a mind capable of logic, possessing preferences over worldstates, and capable of thinking on superhuman timescales will pursue its goals without concern for things it does not find valuable, such as human life.

Oh, I see. You just want to be mean to me for having an opinion.

I disagree heavily with your opinion but no, I’m not looking to be mean for you having one. I am, however, genuinely sorry that it came off that way. I was dealing with something else at the time that was causing me some frustration and I can see how that clearly influenced the way I worded things and behaved. Truly I am sorry. I edited the comment to be far less hostile and to be more forgiving and fair.

Again, I apologize.

@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Well, for those curious this is from Jim Carrey’s wikipedia but it’s also not nearly as bad as it looks. Only one of those things a real problem.

Wrongful death lawsuits

Two lawsuits but over the same death that had zero proof that Carrey was in anyway involved. He started dating a woman named Cathriona White in 2012. She got married in 2013 but they continued their relationship in an on-again-off-again style until her suicide in 2015. The first suit claimed that Carreys wealth and personal influence to get the medication that she killed herself with. There was no evidence that this had happened in any way whatsoever. There was evidence that she had issues with prescription medication before she met Carrey though. The second wrongful death lawsuit was over the same death but this time from the mother of the deceased and for something completely different. This time it was claims that Carrey was riddled with STDs and had lied about it and hid the results from White. Both lawsuits were completely dismissed with no legal proceedings ever going further than those suits. No settlements were made. Carrey was a pallbearer at Whites funeral.

Vaccine skepticism

This is the one as bad as it looks. He wrote an article in 2009 that were doubting Vaccines and in 2015 he said the California governor was a “corporate fascist” who was “poisoning” children by enacting the vaccination requirements. He didn’t say anything about the COVID vaccines that I can find elsewhere. Dude was an idiot but it’s been 10 years and with him not talking too much about it I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. In 2009 he was dating Jenna McCarthy, a known anti-vax lunatic. Brainwashing doesn’t take forever to get rid of. If he’s still anti-vax then yeah, fuck him, but after 10 years without a peep during the biggest vaccine blitz known to man? I’m willing to hesitantly give him the benefit of the doubt. Am surprised no one pressed him on it though.

Political and Spiritual views

He believes in that ‘The Secret’ type nonsense “The Law of Attraction”. Said he visualized having a $10 million cheque and putting it in his pocket and then 7 years later he got a $10 million cheque for Dumb and Dumber. Not really problematic so much as bizarre/unrealistic. He’s also an outspoken socialist. The big part of that section is him talking about sparking an “international incident” because he was making political cartoons of Orange Hitler and then Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. He made some cartoon that criticized fascism by depicting Mussolinis death. This pissed off Mussolinis granddaughter on twitter and she threw a hissyfit.

Artwork and NFTs

He’s a painter and has been for a while. The section mostly focuses on that. There is a single line about NFTs, it being: “In April 2022, Carrey announced that he had minted his first art NFT via the NFT platform SuperRare. The NFT is based on a painting entitled Sunshower, and is accompanied by original voiceover.” Apparently he also released a couple NFTs under a different name before releasing that public one. That is the entirety of his involvement within the NFT community. Also something stupid he did but given it isn’t an ongoing thing he didn’t push relentlessly it doesn’t seem like that big a deal either.

HOWEVER

The title is totally fucking true. Live your life like a good person, don’t be a fuckwit, listen to experts, and don’t jump on trends immediately without doing research. Might be a tiny problem or a big problem but you will have problems if you go down an alternate path. Problems you will then have openly deserved.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar
  1. It is categorically nonsense. It has no basis in science, reality or even common sense.
  2. I never stated that it came from one website. I said “The Secret” type. You missed an entire word. That would be a fair way to describe it as The Secret is the most common version of this nonsense.
  3. I will ridicule anything that ultimately blames you for anything negative in your life. That’s the thing about this utter bullshit that people don’t seem to realize. There is a seriously dangerous flipside to believing that all the good in your life comes from manifestation. It means that all of the negative in your life is either you manifesting it as well or something you deserve for just not trying hard enough. That is disgusting and is not worthy of any respect in my opinion. Any “belief” that victim blames is something that is immediately worthless in my eyes. Not to mention the fact that it completely devalues hardwork and dedication by saying if you just visualize and believe it hard enough that it’ll magically appear in your life. Like I said. Nonsense.
  4. People who believe in this “law of attraction” and people who believe that vaccines cause autism both lack critical thinking skills. It’s completely unsurprising that they’re linked or that there’s a pretty frequent overlap.
Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I needed a distraction from reality and that filled out like 10 minutes. More than happy to help.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

No thanks. I’ve wasted enough time on nonsense today.

Stamets, (edited )
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

You mean the ethos that religion and spirituality wouldn’t exist in the future? That one? The one where TNG goes out of its way time and time again to demonstrate that people who hold religious and spiritual beliefs end up stuck in the dark ages? The one where they have a Prime Directive to specifically prohibit the building of religion around their tech because Starfleet and the Federation recognize that religion causes extreme upheval and sets back their technological progress because they’re obsessed with nonsense? That one? That ethos? The one where it also explicitly says that you should not respect someone’s beliefs if those beliefs are harmful to others or promote dangerous thinking because then it curtails the rights of others? Where if the beliefs cause pain to individuals they’re not worth a second thought? That one? That ethos? The one made by Gene Roddenberry? That Gene Roddenberry who repeatedly publicly said he was a secular humanist? That Gene? The secular one?

Star Trek backs me up. But of course you wouldn’t know that because you’re just desperately grabbing at some gotcha because you cannot find a single leg to stand on to defend your disgusting and harmful beliefs. Because there is no defense. Because they are disgusting. And harmful.

Have fun with that. I’m done giving attention to the likes of toxic spiritualists like you who try to spray their venom under the guise of being enlightened.

Two monitors, a good keyboard, a fast typing speed, ability to read and type at the same time, and wildly unmedicated ADHD. Not a combo I would recommend lol

Don’t care. Didn’t read. See previous comment.

I’m going to block you now. You don’t have anything to say that is worth my time.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it’s bad… It’s gotten to the point that I have unironically said “Wait! Where are my subtitles? I can’t hear without my subtitles!”

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Oh god yeah. Some early video games are fucking horrendous for this. Thank GOD that it’s almost essentially now to have sliders for individual tracks. Always end up lowering the music to 75, the sound effects to 85-90 and the dialogue stays at 100.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Heavily considering blocking sh.itjust.works to be honest. That instance now has admins that care but for a very long time they didn’t. Led to a lot of bad actors making accounts on that instance because they knew they could get away with more. Most trolls I’ve seen lately are from that instance and its getting a little exhausting.

Stamets, (edited )
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not a specific community. I’ve been here since August and have nearly 1.5k posts across a wide variety of communities and wide variety of instances. In that time I’ve seen more and more bad faith comments from people with the SJW instance tag. It’s not universal but it is noticable. Due to my frequent posting, I also have gotten to know admins from multiple instances and all of them have expressed the same frustration. To its credit, SJW did get new admins within the past month or so that are working hard to fix shit and don’t take it lightly.

Just an example of what can happen when mods and admins let things slide for a while.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah… I feel like one of those is significantly fucking worse than the other. Almost like one is an abhorrent thing that the president has been forced into by decades of the US being closely tied with Israel and due to a truly psychotic amount of Israeli lobbying done in the States that could completely upend the election

Then you have the other…

The dude who has said he would lock up opponents, kill migrants, jail journalists, commit crimes against his own people, sterilize Americans, kill his own people, encourages acts of violence against innocent people and the disabled, revoke democracy, install fascism and take control of the planets largest military while being directly controlled by a foreign terrorist state and who has OPENLY said he supports Bibi multiple times.

I feel like one of those is SIGNIFICANTLY FUCKING WORSE.

This isn’t a “Oh both sides suck and idk what to doooooo” situation. This is the best progressive president the US has had in decades versus Orange Hitler. Getting real sick of these takes that use exactly zero brain power. Anyone who makes them are either wildly uneducated in American politics, are a bad actor/troll, are a hateful person or is a moron.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

You think that Biden was forced into this?

Do you honestly believe that Bernie Sanders would’ve said the same things if he were president?

Yes and I think your belief that he wouldn’t shows an insane lack of understanding when it comes to party politics and the power of the office of the President.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

The things Trump did that were impossible were crimes. He didn’t do anything himself otherwise that had any impact. His party did. The house did. The Senate did. The supreme court did. He didn’t do anything personally at all. The President has way less power than you seem to comprehend. They are at the whims of Congress. You must have their support to do anything. Bernie would not have that support, as much as it would be nice.

You are not painting a realistic picture of the executive office.

Also, the gun is metaphorical. It is that support I was talking about.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I cannot go into depth about it but I had an issue with some stuff and talked to the people responsible about it. Was told to expect a response that never came. Someone else then told me about discussions that were happening behind the scenes and how one potential fix was floated. Said fix being something that didn’t address the core problem but was instead a pat on the head and a lollipop to me so that they could keep doing thing anyway.

If you don’t wanna address the issue that’s fine but don’t insult me by floating something that doesn’t listen to anything I’ve said and addresses a problem that doesn’t exist.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

These algorithms keep showing me straight porn. Not so sure they do care…

Stamets,

I’ve had to clean up a depressing amount of comments in this thread so this is everyones friendly reminder.

Rule 1 - Be civil. Don’t attack people for their beliefs or lackthereof.

Rule 2 - No politics.

Report all offending content please.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Because they’re explaining that someone else is atheist?

What a weird comment.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I knew about the suicide statistics but I didn’t know that people were actively using those statistics as a ‘cudgel’ to try to go against trans folks, thus my confused ignorance on that. Well fuck. Definitely something i’ll be keeping an eye out for in the future to make sure that no one does that shit in /c/Gay or other places that I’m active in…

Thank you for explaining, Twink Freud.

Sorry I was going to end that with a heart emoji but then I saw your username and couldn’t stop laughing. I love it.
