Just moved to Linux: a follow up

I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....

bulwark,

I’ve messed up my system so many times over the years that now I think I secretly get excited when it accidentally happens. Maybe I’m a masochist, but I actually enjoy trying to understand what went wrong. A USB stick with a light weight Linux distro and chroot you can usually get back in there and look around at the damage.

bulwark,

As someone who’s exclusively used tiling WM for the past few years you can do anything a full blown DE. I like them for a couple of reasons:

  1. they don’t come with any extra software that I will never use.
  2. They’re light weight with minimal overhead
  3. They are extremely customizable, key bindings are second nature for me know.

I do use the terminal for a lot of things, but I also use the GUI for lots of stuff like web browsing, graphic editing, and gaming.

bulwark,

Heh, I’ve got 32gb on my Proxmox box, and would be lying if I said I wasn’t eyeballing a few 64 or 128 sticks.

why is it so difficult select text from posts?

Good morning, English isn’t my first language and it happens quie often that I need to select a good chunk of text to translate it with DeepL, why, in often cases, is impossible but select the title of an article that Lemmy’s bot has summarised? I would appreciate, and I am pretty confident I am not the only one, if the...

bulwark,

I always get nervous when my personal computer tells me this. I’m like reported to who, sudo?!?

bulwark,

If we launched a rocket at them with our garbage, or maybe our political leaders.

bulwark,

AntennaPod. It’s easily the best podcast player I’ve tried, it’s open source too which is nice.

bulwark, (edited )

I’m off the opinion that no animal would be beneficial to remove. In almost every instance where we have exterminated a species there has been negative unanticipated consequences. Even mosquitos and bed bugs, there are predators that eat them and subsequent predators that eat them and so on. It’s kind of like the butterfly effect. It’s a balance formed from eons of coexistence that is not to be tampered with. There is so many examples where scientists try to introduce an animal to exterminate another that has gone horribly wrong. Regardless of my opinion, all living things have a part in our world. I’m not a vegetarian btw, but I do use Arch.

bulwark,

Agreed, it’s my favorite WM and I still use it on a daily basis. I really like how it handles multiple monitors. I haven’t jumped on the Wayland train yet, but I did play around with Sway WM on a virtual machine.

bulwark,

I’m really interested in the the West end soup. Like what West end and is it worthy of it’s own soup???

bulwark,

I would say if anything MPV player can play more types of video than VLC.

bulwark, (edited )

I love pho and this looks really tasty. If you’re shooting for low carbs I’ve had success with shirataki noodles.

bulwark,

If anyone uses Kodi, there’s an audio setting to downmix the center channel that helps with this. This comic is hilarious btw.

bulwark,

I don’t think printing money and handing it out helped. But I’m some sort of pariah for pointing out that it may have something to do with inflation.

bulwark,

Sort of related, but which pillow is best because I’ve been burned before like OP.

bulwark,

I have a purple mattress and it’s ok, not life changing but better than my 5+ year old box spring. But I absolutely agree that sex on a memory foam is unpleasant to say the least.

bulwark,

I’ve rented a few new cars and I’m just really not a fan of the all lack of physical buttons and controls. The smart settings like lane control, smart cruise control, the engine turning off when stopped, and notifying me with an alert when I’ve driven to many hours are extremely annoying.

bulwark,

I hate trying to explain our silly useless tradition to my red heeler.

bulwark,

Thanks for that playsearch link. I’d never heard of that and detest the wasteland that is the Google Play store. Fdroid is good but I use droidify.

bulwark,

As a brand I think they’re vapid and deplorable, but this is a noble cause hopefully not a publicity stunt. Don’t forget she did bring light to falsely imprisoned inmates and helped free them.

bulwark,

How would I go about finding out my browser ID?

bulwark,

This is a great song. Pretty sure I’ve heard this sampled by both Beck and The Chemical Brothers.

bulwark,

Anecdotally, I personally love Anker stuff and exclusively buy cables and chargers from them.

bulwark,

Sweet, Alien: Isolation is on there. I loved that game but couldn’t finish it because of the crippling amount of anxiety it caused me trying to play it. Might try to beat it this time around.

bulwark,

Man I hate VBA as much as the next guy, but when the IT department has your network so locked down you cant install anything. Having that hidden tab in Excel to write a script to automate some mundane task was really useful. I like python, but there’s no fuckin way my ex employer would just allow me to run random python code like they did for VBA. It was a gov job btw.

bulwark,

Duke Nukem. Hear me out, Duke Nukem Forever was garbage and was the butt of many jokes. It was considered vaporware until it came out and was dated when it did come out. The humor in the 3D version is juvenile and wouldn’t translate today. Actually, nevermind. I just liked it and thought it was fun but there’s no way it could exist in today’s world.

bulwark,

This is really good. Do you have a website or anything?

bulwark,

Out of curiosity how does graphene allow you to sand box apps? Is it just disallowing permissions or closer to a vm?

bulwark,

Hell yeah, AntennaPod is so good. It’s better better than most paid and ad supported alternatives I’ve tried and the best part it’s FOSS.

bulwark,

I have pixel 5 and 6. I got tired of my six only lasting half a day without needing a charge so I switched back to the pixel 5 with lineage os. I can routinely get 2 days worth of normal use on a single charge plus I prefer the smaller form factor. An SD slot would be nice, I’ve got 100+gb of FLAC music on my phone.

bulwark,

I’m in the same boat. What do you think are the limiting factors? I’m starting to see that federation is a double edge sword. It’s like every week a dozen new instances pop-up that have nefarious motives that need to be defederated with.

bulwark,

I did this on a plane once and kicked the seat in front of me.

bulwark,

Idk dude, Ultra Action Guys looks pretty fuckin rad.

bulwark,

Can you post pictures? That sounds cool.

bulwark,

True, I just wish there was more content on some of the smaller niche communities but I guess that it takes time for it to grow and that doesn’t happen overnight.

bulwark,

Facebook Messenger. I hate Facebook but I had to create an account so I can communicate with my coworkers.

bulwark,

Looks brand new dude. What’s the first game you fired up on it?

bulwark,

Damn that sucks, I have one of those extreme 4tb drives. I’ve had it for more than a year with no problems tho. It’s such an awesome form factor for such a large drive. I have three partitions on it. One FAT32 for music that I can play on my phone and the other two are ext4 with movies and TV for the Raspberry Pi. On a related note, why the fuck can’t android recognize an external ext4 drive. Like the entire internal file structure is ext4.

Mortgage rates soar to their highest level in 21 years (www.cnn.com)

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 7.09% in the week ending August 17, up from 6.96% the week before. Rates have been above 6.5% since the end of May and climbing higher since mid-July. This week’s average rate is the highest the 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage has been since April 2002 when it was 7.13%.

bulwark,

Yea, that’s suburbia hell for you. I don’t understand the appeal either.

bulwark, (edited )

Add a multi_key to ~/.XCompose

From the arch wiki: wiki.archlinux.org/…/Keyboard_configuration#Key_c…

bulwark,

Lol, my thoughts exactly. I didn’t cut the cord a decade ago to wind up paying more than cable.

bulwark,

Damn dude that looks amazing. What did you use for blackening?

bulwark,

Dude if you haven’t read it, Dark Alliance is about the CIA’s cocaine contras and it’s pretty eye opening.

bulwark,

This seems like the premise for an 80’s ROMCOM. The girl find out he’s been using his glasses to act interesting and he has to win her back without the help of chat GPT. Hilarity Ensues.

bulwark,

I’m with you. I thought this movie was cool.
