Advice on Linux Notebook

I‘m currently running a HP 255 G8 with: 11th-Gen i5, 16GB RAM, 500GB NVME SSD + 2TB SATA SSD, HDMI and USB-C. Its a great notebook with one flaw. I‘d love to have a USB-C port supporting Power Delivery and DisplayPort/Thunderbolt => possibility to plug in one cable and charge, connect to peripherals (boxes, mouse, keyboard)...

macattack,

I’m biased, you could find a Chromebook that fits your requirements (+ chrultrabook requirements) and then wipe ChromeOS and replace it w/ pure Linux. You won’t waste money on hard drive, RAM or CPU but you can get a more modernized-looking unit w/ 2 USB-C ports.

macattack,

Feedly is the most user-friendly (albeit also perhaps privacy-unfriendly) option imo. I used them for years before I started self-hosting through FreshRSS. If you are targeting someone unfamiliar, I’d go that route

macattack,

Thanks for the additional context. Not the initial commenter but I didn’t realize this was for Android either

macattack,

As of next month, I’ve been using Chromebooks for 10 years however I also came to the same conclusion re: Google/ChromeOS over the summer.

Initially, I bought a Windows laptop but the keyboard layout (specifically the function keys) felt absolutely foreign, even after I wiped it and installed Debian. In retrospect, my theory is that a $500 Chromebook has worse internals but a much better keyboard/trackpad than a Windows equivalent, and that the keyboard layout is more user-friendly in a browser-first world. Eventually, I went back to my Chromebook but with a twist.

I’m biased, but since you seem like you know your way around Linux and tinkering, one suggestion that hasn’t been mentioned is that you buy a new Chromebook and turn it into a Chrultrabook (aka a Chromebook w/ ChromeOS completely wiped & replaced w/ Linux).

I’ve been running one of the last few months and it’s been an overall pleasant experience. Perhaps most important for me is that the tutorial includes keyd to reprogram the keyboard shortcuts to mirror the Chromebook layout. The community is growing and responsive, especially on the Linux side.

macattack,

I just did some digging on Best Buy and Amazon for sales, but mostly came across larger models or models that were MediaTek/Snapdragon (the chrultrabook team almost exclusively works on intel devices).

I’d say your best bet is to go to the supported devices list, and Ctrl + F for ‘13’ or ‘11’ to highlight the smaller-sized chromebooks and then check to see what’s available, or to jump in the Discord and pose the question to those in the linux channel

macattack,

I didn’t have a horse in the race when I was looking to self-host git, but I quickly backed Forgejo when the news came out re: Gitea

macattack,

I second this one.

Recently I’ve created multiple ‘rooms’ in Telegram w/o any intentions of adding another person. Each room has a theme so that my notes are segmented. Also I have access to Google Speech Services, so I moved away from voice recordings completely. Instead, I dictate my notes, which are automatically turned into text. Works for a couple paragraphs, but if I were taking recording work meetings, I’d probably use Google Recorder

Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year (9to5mac.com)

In a surprising move, Apple has announced today that it will adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard. The feature will launch via a software update “later next year” and bring a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users....

macattack,

I hear you, but isn’t the proverbial horse’s head the fact that the EU is looming over them and forcing them to make a move?

RCS and USBC have been available for a while. It seems disingenuous not to acknowledge that Apple has purposely dragged their feet so they could make more profit selling proprietary software and hardware which is probably why you’re being downvoted

macattack,

There are plenty of Chromebooks that can wiped & replaced w/ Linux. I run Debian 12 on my HP x360. Check this list: chrultrabook.github.io/…/supported-devices.html

macattack,

Experienced the same issue when I tried to sign up 2-3 months. Went down a rabbit hole and then just decided to not host w/ them.

There is a workaround where you can create an account if it is on a different gitlab instance (ie: I was able to join git.joinfirefish.org w/o the CC info) but I don’t know how useful that is in the grand scheme of things.

macattack,

Google ran the OS for my phone, Home Assistants, Chromebook and tablet. and it always felt like Apple vs Google, and I couldn’t help but pull for them.

Once I pivoted to Linux for my Chromebook, I become a tad more objective and as of late, it’s clearer that Google do things like purposefully give you different search results so that you can be shown more ads, or suddenly replace the first result of Play Store w/ an ad instead of the searched term so that you click on that instead.

They are an ad company obviously, but as of late, they do things that make me question them more as a company

macattack,

Control + s in Gnome to jump into the search bar. This works for all Gnome apps

macattack,

That’s a good read, especially the additional context at the bottom of the article.

macattack,

If nothing else, it’s a portable connection to your desktop. I have telegram on my mobile devices, and I dictate my thoughts into the app and then curate them on my desktop

macattack,

The lack of ads is beneficial to viewers, but I also think it’s worth noting that a disproportionate amount of people creating videos are doing so to hopefully monetize it.

With the fediverse, that seems much more abstract and so I think there might also be a disconnect for some content to make its way over.

macattack,

Yeah, that is the only thing that makes me skim posts about Threads. I feel like they’re dragging their feet because they know that they don’t offer much different from most of the fediverse alternatives right now yet their users have to give up their privacy.

macattack,

Brave is run (and backed) by multiple people who have actions that have been morally indefensible, which casts doubt over their ability to indefinitely refrain from enshittification and question whether they aren’t already doing something nefarious.

macattack,

Definitely a dark pattern at work. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a driving factor for a name change tbh

macattack,

docs.syncthing.net/users/config.html

Adjust the config settings:

sendreceiveThe folder is in default mode. Sending local and accepting remote changes. Note that this type was previously called “readwrite” which is deprecated but still accepted in incoming configs.

sendonlyThe folder is in “send only” mode – it will not be modified by Syncthing on this device. Note that this type was previously called “readonly” which is deprecated but still accepted in incoming configs.

receiveonlyThe folder is in “receive only” mode – it will not propagate changes to other devices.

receiveencryptedMust be used on untrusted devices, where the data cannot be decrypted because no folder password was entered. See Untrusted (Encrypted) Devices.

macattack,

Yeah that’s the part that is frustrating. It’s such an aggressive implementation of a dark pattern knowing the users muscle memory. It’s akin to suddenly switching the placement of ‘Accept’/‘Decline’ after years of being in the same place.

What surprises me is that it feels more like a money grab from a struggling app than the company in charge of ads across a large percentage of the world.

macattack,

As someone mentioned earlier, it’s a dark pattern, which is inherently deceptive. It’s the same as if an app creator moved the order of the Accept/Decline buttons suddenly to get more people to unintentionally enroll in subscriptions

macattack,

I think you you have a much more limited perspective that doesn’t hold Google as accountable as many people. Here’s a snippet from an article breaking down the subtleties of the adjustments Google makes re: dark patterns:

macattack,

I definitely didn’t know about Aurora store until this post. Currently have it downloaded on my tablet and phone now, thanks for the great advice!

macattack,

Thanks to the suggestions in this thread, I started using it today and it’s amazing! Thanks for the recommendation.

macattack,

I have a new convert now, thanks for the suggestion!

macattack,

I do the same thing as well. I still can’t determine the difference between unGoogled Chromium and Chromium, but my assumption is that chromium is closer to unGoogle Chromium than Chrome, and just require some of the default settings to be adjusted…

macattack,

I’m always down to hear more people talk about self hosting. I just subscribed

macattack,

Oh wow, I didn’t know it was brand new. I downloaded it randomly yesterday when I couldn’t get Alexandrite to work as a pwa. I’m a big fan of the app so far, keep up the great work whoever is developing the app!

macattack,

I’m in California. I have no power here.

I think the point is moreso that the party you support typically is indifferent about minorities/LGBT/immigrants/poor people, etc.

This seems antithetical to the morality we are taught as children (ie: the Golden Rule) which is why people question how you generally survive in that type of relationship when both people seem to have blinders on regarding empathy for others.

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

macattack,

He had a laundry list:

“all bottles” of Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Xanax, Adderall, Liquid Codeine, and Viagra.

Your favorite web UI for your linux server?

Do you use any web ui’s for your Linux server? I’m comfortable managing my server using the command line, but I also want a graphical interface that shows an overview of what is running on the server, the way the resources are being used what containers are running and so on. Also file download uploads would be great to...

macattack,

I’m headless and mostly use containers, so I run lazy docker

macattack,

They Streisand Effect’ed the fuck out of themselves

macattack,

Troll account that purposefully takes the losing side of debates: alexandrite.app/…/[email protected]

macattack,

I’m also confused, and I say this as someone who uses Debian as their main driver.
