This article was written in the sense of bashing gnome but yet some points seem to be valid. It explains the history of gtk 1 to 4 and the influence of gnome in gtk. I’m not saying gnome is bad here, instead I find this an interesting to read and I’m sharing it.
obtainuim looks really useful for keeping these updated, but is there a reason they aren’t just on f-droid? until now I thought that was considered the norm or standard for open source android apps

I’m at the point where I spend so much time being bitter about Christmas music being played too early that when December finally rolls around things start feeling surreal when I can’t whinge about it anymore.
I know Debian and others can breathe life into older machines. But i wonder if there are any distros with serious optimizations that I haven’t heard of. I’ve already tried MX Linux on an old Thinkpad SL400, and didn’t see any difference from plain Debian....
I was really excited about peppermint so I switched my old laptop from Kubuntu. but peppermint feels more sluggish than KDE and now I’m not sure what I did wrong :(
most flatpaks are awesome, it’s my preferred way to get apps. except for steam and syncthing. for some reason no amount of fuckery in flatseal can get flatpak-steam to correctly recognize my game drive or flatpak-syncthing to actually sync files from certain locations. for everything else tho flatpaks rock
yeah I mentioned I used flatseal lol. Ive tried giving it specific narrow permissions and I’ve tried just enabling everything and giving it full perms but nothing works great the way other versions of syncthing and steam just work
what are some examples of women tech centric content? I’m so entrenched in my own bubble that the only thing I can think of is maybe gaming? but even that winds up pretty male dominated afaik
does anyone have the original image for this meme? I’m pretty sure the first person had milk in the original but I can’t remember what the second person had
I think other figureheads will rise up and take charge, I don’t think Linux is going to just blow away like a pile of leaves in the wind when stallman and torvolds are gone.
I just want it to become more popular and easy to use while remaining free (like to buy, hot take I know) and libre.
I want it to be something I can endorse to all my friends, even the friends that almost never use computers and barely know what a filesystem is
my hope is that after this point of it being popular and accessable, FOSS principles will start to gain more traction in spaces like mobile phones and car head units. there will always be proprietary OS’s and software, but in my ideal world FOSS is at least an equal competitor, not just a a niche thing that only super involved computer people get into
So I have a born again christian family member in their mid twenties who stated with complete confidence that there is a dome in the sky called the firmament and beyond it is where heaven is. She believes space doesn’t exist and rockets just blow up because the bible said so. She is not the brightest and normally I would let...
I’m confused, can you describe the method you use directly? my only tool for dealing with people like this is ignoring them and cutting contact, it’d be nice to have some tools in case it happens to someone I actually like
the character in the last panel is the protagonist in the pilot episode of the web series “The Amazing Digital Circus” in which characters appear in a colorful digital world from which there is no escape. in the show, the characters appear without their memories, being unable to remember their names or how they got their beyond “putting on a headset” (presumably a vr style headset although this comic just uses headphones)
the joke in this comic is the suggestion that the protagonists job before the show was as a rent-a-girlfriend girl (basically an escort).
I’m honestly not sure why this would be considered funny as it seems unrelated to the show beyond using the character.
for me it just made all screen bad screen. Its like i never leave work because I live where I work. it still beats a commute but I didn’t think id feel so miserable about it
that sounds cool as hell, come back and update us if you ever figure out what it is! also just so you know for next time, “justaposes” is actually spelled like “juxtaposes” not trying to call you out just trying to help you avoid looking silly in other contexts in your future!

Pinball Tycoon was one of my favorites. great music, solid no-nomsense pinball gameplay. it even had a multi-player mode! never seen another soul talk about it.
Looking to dip my toes into Linux for the first time. I have a 2016 Intel MacBook Pro with pretty solid specs collecting dust right now that I think I’m going to use. Research so far has indicated to me that the two best options for me are likely Mint or Elementary OS. Does anyone have any insight? Also open to other OS’s. I would consider myself decently tech savvy but I am not a programmer or anything. Comfortable dipping into the terminal when the need arises and all that.
woah, so I could even just add it to steam and use vanilla proton, huh? guess it’s time to make space for another couple dozen gigs in my hard drive lol
I have seen many people in this community either talking about switching to Brave, or people who are actively using Brave. I would like to remind people that Brave browser (and by extension their search engine) is not privacy-centric whatsoever....
I used Ubuntu once a few years ago but had compatability issues so I went back to windows. Not a great programmer but I’d like to learn. I’m not looking to do much gaming beyond DOOM2 and factorio. Mostly looking for privacy and a way to get back into programming (I have this pipe dream of learning Assembly). I’m not to...
