There’s a reason why premium fast food has spread so much.
By the time you’ve paid your business rent, your staff and your own rent, you can’t keep prices cheap and still make money.
And at a price point that covers your expenses, people won’t buy your “cheap and simple” food.
So you make your food “premium” cause a hipster burger doesn’t take more time or skill to prepare than a normal one, the cost of better ingredients doesn’t make a difference compared to your other expenses, and all you need for people to be satisfied with the experience is a couple thousand extra initially for interior design and marketing.
I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....
Neither an immutable distro nor a NAS is a replacement for backups.
Some people are lucky enough to never learn that backups are vital. Good luck to you in the future!
A Clone of an OS install is not needed anymore, for a jillion reasons.
If my SSD decides to suddenly quit, I can get back all my personal files and configs, plus all the software I had installed with all configurations, configured repositories, user rights and group memberships, GUI customizations, system-wide fonts, .desktop-files, root .bashrc, self-compiled software, etc. etc. by popping in a new SSD and dding my full disk image backup to it with one terminal command.
I fail to see how that is not a nice thing to have even today, or how I would get back to the previous state just as fast without it.
Imagine an image like Tank Man, or the running Vietnamese girl with napalm burns on her skin, but AI generated at the right moment.
It could change the course of nations.
Hmm, I wonder why the German left would be sympathetic to the Jews having a secure homeland where they aren’t attacked by people who deny their right to exist.
If you think that’s bad, try googling something related to Android.
All the results are shitty blog posts full of padding text with grammar and spelling mistakes.
So I’ve been wanting to try to move to linux for the past few months but have been waiting to be done school, so I could the MS office suite behind me. I’m mostly writing this to share my experience for people who are considering switching....
SoftMaker Office is the best alternative, but most people don’t consider it, because the full version costs money.
For some reason everyone expects alternatives to MS Office to be exactly as good and 100% compatible while at the same time being free of charge.
A bicycle that is as reliable as a car.
I bought a top of the line cargo ebike from a German manufacturer that cost half as much as a cheap new car. It needs scheduled maintenance every 2000km. After 5000km the entire drivetrain needed to be replaced, the front brake completely failed when temperatures dropped below freezing, the motor sometimes cut out due to a firmware bug in the controller and the suspension seatpost broke when I rode down a curb.
Imagine any car having safety-critical faults like that after 5000km.
For normal bikes I agree. Ebikes and especially cargo Ebikes suffer from lack of specialized parts. All the parts are the same as on a 10kg mountainbike. My bike with me and a load on it weighs 170kg. Make it 3kg heavier, triple the beefiness of all components.
And I don’t need 11 sprockets that are millimeter-thin when I only use 3 gears (for flat ground, uphill, and an emergency bailout for when the battery dies).
all of those things only harm the human experience and end up making people live less!! no drug!! why do people like these things if they only harm your body… i don’t understand… gluten is bad for your heart too

I‘m currently running a HP 255 G8 with: 11th-Gen i5, 16GB RAM, 500GB NVME SSD + 2TB SATA SSD, HDMI and USB-C. Its a great notebook with one flaw. I‘d love to have a USB-C port supporting Power Delivery and DisplayPort/Thunderbolt => possibility to plug in one cable and charge, connect to peripherals (boxes, mouse, keyboard)...
It’s the standard recommendation for a cheap Linux laptop cause they are built well, good value for the price, designed with repairability in mind, and have very good Linux support.
Default instance blocks should largely replace defederation
Since what content users might want to see is quite unlikely to match which servers the admins tolerate, choosing instance on the Fediverse can be quite complicated, which is inconvenient and off-putting for new users.
For this reason, and simply that the Fediverse is stronger united, I believe defederation should ideally be reserved for illegal content and extreme cases. If Fediverse platforms would allow instances to simply block the rest for users by default, the user experience would be the same, unless they decide otherwise.
Federation copies content from other instances onto an instance admin’s server.
So the instance admin, who is responsible for all content on their server, gets to decide if they want that or not.
This has happened in Germany, too.
I’m not going to try and educate other people anymore. Too many people now explode without warning at the slightest perceived criticism in public.
2004 Ford Focus station wagon.
It was the most sold car model of that year, worldwide.
Small and economical enough for every day use, large enough to put a mattress in the back and sleep in it, or transport lots of stuff.
Cheap to buy, run, maintain and fix.
Decently reliable.
Not yet filled to the brim with electronic gizmos and computer chips.
Otherwise not remarkable in any way.
In my opinion, it was the Model T of that era.
If you took a system that uses D4, replaced that with D6 according to my table and didn’t tell your players that the system was actually meant to be played with D4, do you really think they’d notice any imbalance? Would it affect their fun?
No, not at all. You only notice a difference if you calculate it, it won’t suddenly make your character class or weapon imbalanced.
So i’m helping my best friend to try instaling nvidia gtx 1050 mobile drivers on his laptop, we genualy don’t know what to do and i can figure out how to make it work, so it would be very helpfull if someone could explain me what to do or provive me with a guide to make it work
Why do you think Optimus is what you need? I run Arch with a 1050 and all I did was install the nvidia package and reboot.
Have you already tried that and run into issues?
