Took me a moment to realize what exodus this was referring to which I guess answers the question. I deleted my fairly old account during the AMA at the beginning and I do not miss it. From time to time I have been back for those specific things that have developed communities that do not really exist on kbin but I'll never post there again and I probably visit the R site maybe twice a month.
While kbin doesn't have everything that I hope that it would, so far I find it good and I visit daily.
So these days my only social media, if you call kbin that, are kbin and Mastodon. X, FB, insta, whatever corporate BS are all 0% usage for me now. Very occasionally I view tildes but I don't even have an account there.
I often hear science-adjacent folks stating that a tree needs to be 30 years old before it starts absorbing CO₂, usually paired with the statement that it’s therefore pointless to start planting tons of trees now for slowing climate change....
Could be sort of a "break-even" point? Assuming it's even true, which is a pretty big assumption. You could ask them for a source next time if you hear it often, because I've heard it precisely 0 times before.
Possible 0 budget given to presenting the product? Or “hey this pictures online are exactly what we need, why not use them” and didn’t think for 2 minutes

@romancelandia Can we help one of our own? @Limecello is still recovering from major surgery and struggling to pay off medical bills.
Remember that GFM is a business that deducts their fees before paying out any monies raised, so you can tip them $0 and maximize the benefit to those who need help.
They’d rather pay 200 mil to people like Joe Rogan. It doesn’t matter how you look at that deal, he’s not worth that much, and there would be 0% chance of getting that money back (thats a lot of additional subscriptions)
Capitalism is criticized a lot on here (especially by American users, it seems to me). Most of that seems well-founded, but I also have the feeling that most of these complaints are simply venting and not the first step to improvement....
The youtube channel, Economics Explained, has a lot of great videos on macroeconomic concepts. They recently featured a video on Norway pointing out how it handles its economy near perfectly.
The video explains Norway got pretty lucky, and it’s not like every country could straight up copy them and succeed, but the major points are:
Their massive natural resource reserves are majority owned by the government. The government puts the profits from this into stable long term investments to benfit the citizens of the country. In many other countries, natural resources have been sold to private companies for a one time payment and private shareholders now benefit from the long term investment.
Their government has one of the highest tax rates in the world, even though they earn so much profit from natural resources they could literally have a 0% tax rate. Despite this massive tax rate, Norway has some of the lowest emigration of people and companies. Nobody has fled the country due to high taxes like many fear would happen elsewhere.
Their government spends heavily on social welfare and ensuring a high quality of life for all of its citizens, and their companies provide short work weeks and long vacations, which are huge reasons why nobody has left.
I think when people say they hate capitalism, what they mean is they hate working 50 hour weeks at a job they hate for a boss who treats them like dirt for a salary that doesn’t even pay their rent while the CEO has more wealth than small nations and spends it on eating endangered animals on their mega yatch with politicians and judges who then pass laws making it legal to hire children and dump garbage into the ocean. They don’t really care about private companies and investments, they care about how sociopathic greed has become so normal that it’s actively defended.
Many years ago Inworked at an Arby’s inside a food court. A man and woman came in, and she ordered a Jamocha shake while he got a free cup of water. They then went back into the mall.
About 20 minutes later they come back and he complains about a fly in his water. The assistant manager (I was just a cashier) said sorry and gave him a new cup of water.
“What are you going to do to make it up to me?” Seriously? It was free, we could give you 10 times what you paid and it’d still be $0. Plus, the fly probably came from you going out in the mall. They didn’t get their way so she asked for a refund on the shake and got that. Ridiculous if you ask me.
True, buuuuuut the FOSS community is a bit militant with being anti-corpo and anti-capitalist. Even if it is not a direct concern for people who give 0 fucks about FOSS tribalism, the culture’s benefits directly impact them in a good way. Besides, capitalism is not something many people like lmao. Most capitalism lovers either are big business leeches, or kids belonging to those families or are Instagram dronies.
My IT Bros said the same back when I had to choose W10 or Linux, they haven’t used arch and I had 0 Linux experience. I messed up every single step of the installation to a point where I knew from the problems I created what I did wrong. After many tries and a week later I had a working installation with dual boot. Never used windows and removed it a year later. It was rough but I learned how to recover from most errors a user can create.
If learning is the goal arch and arch-wiki is great.
Manjaro can be a real pain depending on your hardware setup. They make a lot of choices that are difficult to work around when you need to (for better or worse) which kinda defeats the whole point of arch (to not be opinionated)
I have the same setup of packages on a few computers. 0 issues on one, plagued with boot issues on another. And unfortunately, the attitude of the devs and forum is that if you have boot issues its obviously your fault.
It was definitely a good first arch distro for me, but pacman, aur, and everything else work just as great on Endeavour and all my devices are far more stable than when they were on Manjaro.
Note: Je ne veux pas faire peur. Le coût de la crèche est dépendant de tes revenus. Ici on reste dans le cadre des revenus de ma famille et des revenus indiqués dans l’article. J’ai des amis qui payent 100 euros par mois pour la crèche.
My assumption was that a temperature scale for the human experience would place the ideal temperature around the middle, and not towards too hot. Would it improve such a scale if the 0 F was closer where 20 or 30 is currently, so that 70-80 is more centered? Is 0 F the perfect point for where it’s unacceptably cold for a human, or could it have been shifted up or down the scale?
