Yes.

Consider blocking Firebase domains in HOSTS file, which you can do in NetGuard or Invizible Pro, which you can supply your HOSTS file.

Not sure if Hagezi or such community made HOSTS rulesets carry Firebase domains in their anti-Google/BigTech part of domains.

There are no client side tools on Apple to accomplish this, unlike on any Android, no matter $50 or $5000.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

These are in progressing order of complexity.

  • Exodus database shows the “bad” domains an app connects to.
  • Warden on F-Droid does a similar but more comprehensive job for any installed app packages.
  • App Manager shows activities, services, receivers and providers apps utilise or have in a comprehensive manner.
TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

There will be GrapheneOS malicious actors and “security” clowns that will try to shit on F-Droid. Condemn them, boycott them, ignore them as much as you can. All they desire is to control the FOSS scene and/or to evangelise Big Tech corporate app stores.

We can think of solving FOSS community problems without their existence.

Signal Facing Collapse After CIA Cuts Funding (kitklarenberg.substack.com)

On November 16th, Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, published a detailed breakdown of the popular encrypted messaging app’s running costs for the very first time. The unprecedented disclosure’s motivation was simple - the platform is rapidly running out of money, and in dire need of donations to stay afloat....

Also, I am somewhat concerned of allowing a dictatorship to just erase at it’s convenience a free and democratic country.

Last I checked, Russia did not erase any country. However, Blackrock, a private US firm, is acquiring and selling Ukraine’s land. You should be worried about US/NATO-backed Israel terrorist state that is genociding and erasing the country of Palestine.

And it creates a problem for us people from India, because we cannot start saying “south east Asians” or such terms because there are many countries in SE Asia. They should be called indigenous Americans or Native Americans, not Indians. And considering we are 1.5B people and everywhere in the world, we need to have a suitable identifier, where India is suffixed with -n.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Voting shows there is a possibility I am not 100% wrong.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

This is a very dumb argument. Using proper identifiers for citizens of different countries is not a matter of monopoly. Nobody calls the indigenous people of other countries “Indians”, so why should Native Americans be called “Indians”? Ever heard of Australian Aboriginals or Canadian Wet’suwet’en or other people being called “Indians”? This argument is so dumb, should Pakistanis start calling themselves Germans and Russians should start calling themselves Africans, because no monopoly?

America spans 2 whole fucking continents and islands surrounding them. India is not a continent.

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Buy a $30 SSD and put Windows on it. Boot to SSD when you want to use Windows, and put it down the booting order list in BIOS, so Linux always gets booted by default.

You will hear less about dual booting in Linux community because Windows loves to destroy GRUB bootloader, and also Windows is just becoming more and more annoying so there is a “nudging” or push to adopt Linux, forcibly or otherwise.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Not a luxury. A 128 GB SSD can be bought for about $25 (last year) or even cheaper now, and you buy once for many years, as home users write a lot less on SSDs.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Many ThinkPad models have a separate extra M.2 WWAN slot for 4G SIM modem, something you can check with respective models’ PSREF sheet. You can put either 128 or 256 GB (whatever specified) M.2 SSD of sizes either 2230 or 2242, which I was able to do on my L470 (a very modern laptop).

On a desktop, it is obviously easy, but on laptops, it depends, but you will find ThinkPads to be the most pro-consumer and pro-poweruser laptops.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Consider Lemmy as a global village and a chill hangout place, where you have no face. You comment, you reply to whatever you like, maybe have a talk with someone relatable. Maybe ask questions for queries too specific or personal (in appropriate community) and that you cannot find an answer for on internet.

We will never have a discussion platform as busy as Reddit again, because of a few factors, which end up making it worthwhile to stick around in Fediverse. Reddit has been conveniently the place Digg users migrated from, that was a more civilised 4chan, and that forum users of pre-2010s ended up flocking to. There have been cultural movements/incidents over time like MGTOW, Gamergate, the rise of alt-right and eventually liberals and leftists leading to Twitter-tier dramas, a lot of redpill/bluepill shit. There have been communities of various video game franchises and TV shows that used to be the focal point of internet social culture. However, redpill is rotting and dying away, people are becoming fedup of endless consumerism and capitalism, even ending up getting fatigued by the internet itself. Then, post-COVID, you have corporations pulling disgusting moves, products going subscription mode, everything seemingly aiming for the attention economy, drying us up of our liveliness and little joys, and to suck every bit of money off our wallets.

Shit gets fatiguing. But I am glad I got to experience this peak chaos without the AI, because the world with AI is going to be hell, and disconnect from virtual world is going to become invaluable and even a type of skill, as the difference between real and virtual worlds blurs. Stick around, even if anonymously, and observe. Talk to non-AI real people so you can challenge your worldview against that of society’s, to not become isolated and mentally deranged. Foster a sense of collectivity and empathy.

After having used Ubuntu LTS for 6 years, I find a little more peace with Debian. I do not like systems that break. Debian Stable is IMPOSSIBLY HARD to break, even more than Ubuntu LTS, which only broke once because of my stupidity of installing ProtonVPN client and using VPN killswitch through it. Switched to using OpenVPN/Wireguard config files.

Learn about the concept of relational and transactional relationships. Learn to identify which ones are which in your life, and if they are one way or two way. You do not need anything other than two way relational relationships in life. Discard the others, they are deadweights.

For the creators, people have become leeches accustomed to only taking, and never giving back. It is perfectly okay to shut yourself off rather than bleeding your soul to death. For the leeches, it is a one way business. Might as well treat yourself like royalty. You have a limited amount of gratitude and need to refuel yourself.

Men need to hurry the fuck up and learn stoicism. Society does not care about a man’s emotional sanctity, which is the counterpart to a woman’s physical sanctity. Men are also far weaker emotionally and psychologically than women.

Be mighty AND be respectful towards others. If you separate these and be just mighty, you end up being an asshole that will fall just as hard. If you be too nice and respectful, people will make you a doormat.

Edit: I should probably add this, even if obvious from the last one.

Respect consent AND never worship anyone. This advice is directed largely towards isolated men who fall for redpillers, and/or end up taking extreme lessons regarding women. Be courteous and ask women. But also do not end up being a pathetic simp. On a lesser level, this advice goes for women too.

This is not an excuse, but studied on a brain level by neurologists and psychologists. I would recommend you check Dr Daniel Amen, one of the world’s best psychiatrists who has scanned over 250K brains. He explains these things well, and people like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus have consulted him.

His 2 hour podcast on Diary Of A CEO on YouTube is good. (Skip to 1:32:48 upto 1:35:24, 3 minutes, if you want to get to the part I am focusing on, differences between male and female brains. I recommend watching full though.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycTZ_t-aiuU The video has gathered 3M views in a month.

We can make the society better only if we stick to facts, and rebuild a foundation on that basis. We have an individualistic and apathetic capitalist society today. We are led to it, but we need to reverse the course, making the society collectivist, empathetic and knit together.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I do not trust Lorelei’s personal view. This is a fact coming from a famous psychiatrist, I mentioned in a reply to him. Consider watching 3 minutes of that.

A whole lot of 90s and post 90s people seem to have some kind of neuro disorders, like ADHD, neurodivergence, autism and so on. It also exists in older people, but we are the current and future workforce, and the older baby boomers have lived out their lives. The whole obsession with empathy seems to be highly simplified, and I think nobody explains properly why “mental health” and “get therapy” is such a big issue. I think I got the answer, thanks to Dr Daniel Amen’s podcast video.

Do yourself a favour, watch it, even better if you watch the whole thing. He has scanned over 250K brains and is a professional.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Important matters more than difficulty. I wanted to get the message out.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I do not trust the words of an internet user because the other guy has seen and studied (250K) more brains than anyone else in the world, and has studied brains of people like Muhammad Ali and Justin Bieber. The doctor is not just a certified professional, he is at the top of psychiatry field, the crème de la crème. I will never prioritise anyone’s observations over that kind of a leading expert.

If you want to validate yourself forcibly and feel deadlocked, despite knowing someone’s certified credentials and real world treatment results, then that is on you. I can only lead the horse to the water, horse can choose to drink or not.

If you went ahead through a 2 hour long podcast that gained 3M views in a month, maybe you would gain a lot out of it, considering we do not live in particularly the most encouraging times as far as attention span goes towards something as boring as 2 people talking on a gray table.

I should add that I just discovered I have ADHD, and am able to hyperfocus on topics I like to study and also have EFD, so I found incredible details in all the stuff the doctor explained.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

You are trying to gaslight me, so this will be the last of our interactions on the internet.

A doctor at the top of their specialised field is not “worshipped”, but respected when their observations are held to the highest regard. Not doing so is a very high order of disrespect. You think that lemmy user has studied even 25 brain scans of people, let alone over 250 hundred thousand brains? I am not going to explain things any better than a world renowned psychiatrist. This is why I told you to go watch their video. You cannot do it, and that other lemmy user you are revering so much cannot either. A doctor can.

I am also done with your stubbornness, and your faux obsession to forcibly prove yourself correct using emotions against hard proofs with basis in science. If you had any respect for neurological conditions or disorders, you would not go around dismissing a world renowned psychiatrist for an internet user’s word.

Feelings are not more important than logic and facts. The day you understand this, you will grow as an individual who does not need to rely on impulsive and emotional methods to get through talking to people. It is okay to be firm with facts rather than be delusional with feelings.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

See this neckbeard extremist evangelising is why people stay away from Linux community. Linux hobbyists having 0 concerns for others’ jobs, work or needs is incredibly icky. I advocate for FLOSS, but posts like this just gives more ammunition to Windows/MacOS/proprietary culture fanboys.

OP said this to a poster below:

It’s sad you built a career out of black box code lmao. […] I piss on your profession

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Simply put, I prefer the freedom of access to more information.

Longer explanation.

  • Still have a reddit around to access the “NSFW” labelled posts (all are not porn) and quarantined subreddits (like r/Russia).
  • Have Discord and WhatsApp so I do not get cut off society. Yes, cutting yourself off is a speedrun to becoming deranged and conspiratorial, as it prevents challenging your mindset against society and prevents keeping a basic level of tab on current trends.
  • YouTube is used through NewPipe, Invidious and ytdlp.
  • Have an Amazon account for the rare occasion to buy stuff otherwise hard to get IRL.

No Google, no Apple, no Facebook/Instagram, no Snapchat, no Huawei/Samsung/OEM accounts, none of the other services. I practice what I preach as a serious privacy advocate, and keep things practical.

Wanted to share the libredirect Firefox plugin, for abandoning Youtube. (libredirect.github.io)

This is a plugin I found recently and really enjoy. It gives you the opportunity to redirect several webpages to alternatives. For example Youtube to FreeTube or Piped. If I search for youtube in Firefox, FreeTube automatically opens and shows me my feed. I like it, I use it, I can recommend it.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I have used LibRedirect for quite a good while now. It replaced Privacy Redirector, Teddit Redirect, and other addons together, and covers the largest swathe of web services amongst all the addons, is very customisable and the instance ping test feature is brilliant for checking dead and active instances.

I like !edc, it has the potential and needs to migrate from Reddit. Glad to get r/piracy and r/datahoarder migrated over to here, although datahoarder still mostly is a second home at Lemmy.

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Feel the same. Leftist culture probably also frowns at knives and such stuff, and sopuli is a Finnish instance which means its a lot of Europeans that love their EDC gear and knives, and feels like either too much aggressive or a luxury in leftists’ minds. If it were communicated that guns are not the kind of gear that EDC lovers congregate over, it could become more appealing to Lemmy.
