plactagonic,

So in my country traditional dish is carp with potato salad. Usually we go to short trip around, return at 16:00 and start preparing it. After dinner we open the presents, watch some fairy tale and go to church. I am atheist but at least I can tell that I periodically visit church, nobody needs to know that my period is 1 year.

October Make Something Month: Week 3

Howdy y’all! Another week, another update post. This is the third update post, so comment below with your progress, challenges, and next steps. See you all next week, and then a few days after that for the final post for the month. Then we’ll have a week for finishing touches and documenting out projects before the showcase.

plactagonic,

I didn’t notice the first two posts. But last week I finished puting together my bike. I had a frame for about a year and procrastinate with picking components.

Usualy this time I making cider but this year all apples fel from the trees before they ripen.

plactagonic,

Not much like favourite movie but some interesting ones. I recently listened to podcast about Czech cinematography and there are some worth watching.

“Marečku podejte mi pero” is fun comedy with lots of puns and remembered lines. It stars first Czech professional actor and some that are active to this day.

If you want something from the same guys but more serious “Nejistá sezóna” and “Kolja” (this won Oscar for best foreign film) is also worth watching.

plactagonic,

Little hectic, I moved and changed jobs and still I had to “visit” my parents sometimes to get my stuff and dealing with paperwork. But it will get better I will probably have everything done today.

plactagonic,

Mint was my first distro. My interest begun with LibreOffice, then W10 got unusable for me and rest is history.

I distrohopped a year ago but returned to Mint

Does Anyone Have a TIFU Moment When Cooking?

I was finishing a jar of extremely hot peppers (7 pot primos) that I had fermenting on Thanksgiving day. I made a hot sauce with them and cantaloupe. I had them in a pan at a low simmer to meld the flavors. The problem was the steam coming off was potent as hell. It filled the house when everyone was arriving and coughing from...

plactagonic,

On the summer camp I cooked there were few as always.

We made halušky (Slovakian national dish) and water didn’t boil enough so first batch was ruined.

Cooking related - we forgot to order bread and noone can deliver it.

One accident with chilly in food.

My whacky experimental oatmeal (it was edible).

plactagonic,

Similar - I didn’t check valve on my brewery and get 10l of wort on me.

Also check out the [email protected] community.

plactagonic,

Remembered another one.

Friend ask me and another friend, we cook on summer camp together, to cook lunch on his wedding.

He wanted form us to cook meal A we tell him that we didn’t cook it so it will be shtshow, but we could cook meal B, C or D. This didn’t work so we cooked meal A and it was shtshow.

It all started with “fully equipped professional kitchen” whitch wasn’t equipped at all (we were prepared for this). Than few other things go wrong. But the TIFU moment was soup - some miscommunication and bad decisions led to adding the noodles in it too early so you can imagine the porridge it become.

I had a blast afterwards, and too much beer to forget this experience.

My friend then said that it was exactly as he imagined it to be, because his now wife didn’t want another meal.

plactagonic,

We bought few chickens (hens) and if you want reliable source of eggs from them you have to replace them after 2 years.

It will be sad dinner/lunch next year.

But seriously it is part of life and it sucs. I want to have few pigeons and their lifespan is short too.

plactagonic,

Not at all confrontational.

We know that it slows and we decided that we will replace them one by one (we don’t want to eat chicken for straight month).

I am mowing in 2 days from my parents house (jaj after 22 years) so it won’t be my decision. In a case of the pigeons I want to add few pairs for food (easiest way to taste them).

Favorite uses for cucumbers (beehaw.org)

Just inherited a bunch of cucumbers from a friend’s garden. I love them just on their own with some salt, and have made many a salad using them. I’m curious what kinds of fun things you all may use them for. Even if you feel like it’s basic please share as I will be eating cucumbers for the next several days straight lol....

plactagonic, (edited )

I like them in salads, but when is harvesting season and I have lots of them I like to add them to pasta veggie mixes.

Usually I add them at the end of cooking to be lightly roasted but still crunchy.

Edit: roasted autoerection in action ;-)

plactagonic,

For me it is maybe camping.

I just tested my new sleeping bag - under 0.5kg rated to -5°C. And realised that I bought/ replaced lots of gear to higher quality gear over few years.

plactagonic,

We tell all parents that some gear is worth to invest in.

Still on the summer camp some children’s have too light sleeping bags (we have to borrow them some old army bags), bags worth only for recycling bin…

plactagonic,

The key is to let them know that you don’t give a damn about them anymore.

plactagonic,

So I have this and next week last shifts and my mood can be expressed by this song.

Next month I will start in small brewery (3 people) and I hope that it will be much better job than that I am leaving.

plactagonic,

Just try few of these from live usb and pick what you like.

You can use Ventoy and just drag all your ISO images to it but creating few USBs is easiest option for beginners.

There is nothing bad about Debian/Debian based distros and I think that it is great option I started on Mint, tryed Manjaro and get back to Mint.

plactagonic,

For me it is just something that has Reddit like environment but otherwise it is completely different.

plactagonic,

It would be some sort of tortillas and other types of flatbread.

In theory it is simple just make dough and put it on the iron plates (directly on stove). In practice you stand 2 hours directly above hot wood stove and making 100 of them.

Easy meals are necessary, you can’t make hard to cook meals every day. Only few times we decided to make our lives harder and make sth like tortillas.

plactagonic,

Look at my oldest post, there is “oven” we made few years ago and we call it Igorrr.

I and other instructors make bread and other things in it. It is less work to make one big loaf than lots of small tortillas/pitas. I burned ceramic in it this year.

plactagonic,

No we use it for fun, it is work but it is mainly for our experiments/whacky ideas that we want to try. The bread is just a bonus ;-).

plactagonic,

For me it is weirdly entertaining and frightening at the same time.

plactagonic,

I have similar machine, but I run Linux, and don’t have these problems. Not exactly configured just some profiles for different use cases.

It was eye-opening how it got faster and snappier after getting rid of windows. Most apps don’t need tinkering, just installing from repo for me.

plactagonic,

I use mint and it is great choice, I am not so techy and it just works on this machine.

plactagonic,

You can also get in the rabbit hole of homebrewing. I store lots of fruits in liquid form my home made cider is good after about year in bottles.

plactagonic,

Yes, I was here to suggest some workaround for him. This should be good option for OP to find way around this limitation.

Lots of disabled people think in different way - not I can’t do it, but how can I do it or what to do different to came to same goal.

plactagonic,

Czech maps from Seznam, I talked with marketing boss (don’t know his exact position but it is high) and he told me that they don’t make money from it.

If any one is interested mapy.cz it is must have app for travel in Czech.

Need recommendations for a reliable mobile phone (UK)

This might not be the best place to ask this as you’ll all be asking far more of your phones than I ever will, but I need to buy a mobile phone so friends can get a hold of me when we meet up in a different city next month. The battery on the mobile I bought when I moved two years ago won’t take a charge now....

plactagonic,

If you want it only for SMS and calls buy some dumb brick. But if you need more things from it I can’t help you I am dissatisfied with most phones but now I have second hand FP 3 and it is enough for me.

plactagonic,

If you want it only for testing, breaking things… Buy some POS office PC, lot of companies is always getting rid of these.

I am not self hosting, but I will probably buy few of these from my work and try it (at least it’s my plan).

plactagonic,

Stone? We had only unburned bricks, no right angles, several kinds of walls put together and bulging out to rooms. It is always funny to add or redo some furniture, electric work …

plactagonic,

Funniest part of it is that for some parts even exists some drawings, some electric work was made by students (friend was teaching electricians), something done by friends…

It is just mess from outside perspective.

plactagonic,

Can I volunteer my matches. You know patch for comment section.

plactagonic,

You know, I eat most of these things but I wouldn’t say that everyone should eat it. At least try it once to make their opinion on it.

Lots of people don’t like the consistency and legs but when ground nobody recognise it.

plactagonic,

As a European I can tell that this is inaccurate - most of us didn’t know that half of these places exist.

plactagonic,

Can confirm, I replaced bunch of useless cloud crap on my mum’s phone with simple tools and she likes it. I use them too.

plactagonic,

I am homebrewer (for now). After 6 years I eyeball nearly everything. How my friends put it - you never brew bad beer and it is always different.

There are some software tools but I don’t need to use them (mostly). For hardware/gear I have this DIY Frankenstein monster of brewery which works better than most bought ones I tryed.

plactagonic,

beehaw.org/post/727140

Look in brewing community (I linked start guide for beer from there).

For beer you need 2 big pots (I use modified 50l pots) and fermentation vessel. You can start smaller but it takes same time and effort to make 10 or 50l of beer.

Safety - you could get burned. And sometimes need to repaint the kitchen when you make bombs.

plactagonic,

Also I started when I was about 15 yo. My dad tought me to brew. He made the brew monster (it is little bit dangerous but it works).

I wrote for now because in 2 months I will be changing jobs - I will be working in brewery.

So I will change from beer to ciders and mead.

plactagonic,

It is better that way. I like my friends irl.

plactagonic,

I just played it and first I thought about how hard it is to dance foxtrot.

I didn’t seen Toy in en and maybe this song was cut/replaced in my native language.

plactagonic,

For anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrGfahzt-4Q

This gets little in depth on this issues.

How do you meal plan? (i.imgur.com)

Recently, I wanted a white board to have a physical list of homemade healthy food available at home. We didn’t have the money for one so we bought some dry-erase markers and taped old paper bags onto the back of the glass of our rarely used china cabinet. I like having a big visible list in the kitchen so my husband and I...

plactagonic,

I cook on summer camp, our meal plan is same as last year but changed for trips outside off camp site.

It is only a reference, on site we cook from what we can get hands on or what didn't lasts long.

plactagonic,

It is the update to 0.18 federation is broken sometimes between old and new servers.

It is little bit work in process. I will try to update it and add pictures.

plactagonic,

Don’t take it as exact terminology but I call fermented juice cider if it is carbonated (and really don’t care about fruit except of grapes - then it is sparkling wine or champagne). If it has no carbonation then it is wine.

Czechs have more words for differentiation:

  • Mošt - freshly pressed juice (from all fruits).
  • Burčák - partially fermented juice.
  • Cider - fully fermented carbonated drink. This word is imported.

Some cider makers here makes mixes of fruits and still call it cider so it is little mess in terminology. For beer there is lots of specific terms in Czech I really can’t find translation.
