i got sick again so the financial update and also this thread are late. i’ll get the financial update up at a later point, or i might just combine it with january since there’s not that much to report as far as i can tell
Been off here for a bit as things got busy with work and choirs, but now things are starting to relax a bit ahead of Christmas which is good.
My niece was born at the end of November, was nice to meet her even if I’m not a baby fan (they’re so warm though! Had no idea). Looking forward to her being out of nappies/able to talk so I can bond with her a bit.
Had the first Christmas concert of the season last week which went well, always in awe of the orchestra we play with, they’re so talented that I forget I’m supposed to be singing. Have two carol concerts week after next which will be fun.
Seeing some comedy this weekend and next week which I’m looking forward to.
Sorry to hear you’re going through a tough time. It’s impressive that you’re managing to keep up with things like the gym and guitar though in spite of that.
Glad to hear you’re able to escape through reading. Heard so many good things about Ursula Le Guin but not got around to reading anything yet.
Wow that’s definitely an overreaction! If your sister was concerned wouldn’t she just open it first, rather than letting the kids see it/do it? Or message people first to check if anyone sent it?
No good deed goes unpunished I guess! Glad it mostly worked out ok
pretty quiet week so far. incidentally, next week is election week in most of the US, so don’t forget to vote on November 7th (and vote early if you can–my ballot just has to be dropped off)
Busy week for me so far and I am knackered. Been out and about with work which is nice but it’s so tiring being sociable on a Monday, usually I work from home in my pyjamas. Finally got an answer regarding my salary, it’s not going down in April after all. I think appealing to my director did it, for a manager she is pretty great.
Performing in a concert on the weekend as well as doing a choral workshop so I will be amazed if I can speak on Sunday. Going to a work conference up north(ish) next week which will be fun. Staying in a relatively posh hotel overnight and cannot wait.
Here in WA state, the minimum wage per hour is $15.74 (higher in some areas). Tipping culture says 20%, but that’s generally to support lower paid waitstaff in areas that can pay less than minimum wage by employers. Where/What are you tipping and what kind of service would you expect for a 20% tip?
I live in the UK so tipping thankfully isn’t a thing here as we have minimum wage. I will tip if I’m at a restaurant with a group of people but otherwise I won’t tip at all. Hospitality workers deserve to be paid more but it’s not up to the customers to supplement a dodgy business. I am in a union and will always vote for parties who advocate for employment rights though.
Tipping is very much a cultural thing and I think it’s not wise to treat it like it’s the same everywhere. In the US it sounds like it’s a necessary evil and if I were to visit I would comply, but it’s not the same as in other countries.
It’s been a long week. Quarterly reporting time so I haven’t really stopped. It’s been good though, very productive. I went to a show last night which was great fun, just what I needed.
Also finally found a form of fibre craft that I can do- loom knitting. Makes such a difference to not have to rely on hand eye coordination, turns out mine is worse than I thought! So looks like the baby hat will be ready for my niece after all.
Still ill, annoyingly. It’s just a cough now but every time I go to choir I can’t speak the day after. I know I need to rest my voice but I can’t miss a rehearsal without not being allowed to perform at the concerts.
Speaking of, got an invite to potentially sing in Hiroshima as part of the 80th anniversary of the bombing in 2025. It costs a huge amount to travel there but may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not sure whether to go for it.
Otherwise I’m ok. Meeting at work last week went ok, they’re going to try and get some clarity to me before Christmas.
things have obviously popped off this week geopolitically so i’ve been pretty busy trying to bail some people out of very bad decision-making. this has gone mixed to say the least; anyways a lot of people gotta shut the fuck up about geopolitics because there have been 80 unnecessary trillion bad takes this week
Better than last week in that I feel almost back to normal. Never had a chest infection before (that wasn’t Covid) but it was like being hit by a truck, wonder if having had Covid twice makes me more susceptible to these things now. Or maybe I’m just getting older.
I will know if I have a future at my work by the end of the week which is slightly nerve wracking. My job is safe but due to the restructure my salary is protected only until April, when it decreases by a fair bit. I am handing my notice in after Christmas if management don’t agree to keep my salary at the same level as I’ve worked too long and hard there to be treated like shit salary wise. Hoping it won’t come to that but we’ll see. Meeting management this week and making my case as it’s budget time.
Not had a great week, not been very well. I’ve had what feels like a chest/throat infection and it’s made me knackered. Had hardly any appetite and haven’t felt like going to choir was a good idea (don’t want to infect anyone) so have had barely any good things to get me through it.
I don’t really get sick but when I do it hits me like a truck. Slowly getting better but I’m very impatient.
Howdy y’all! It’s October 1st, so make something month has begun. If you would like to participate, post below with what you are planning to do. There’s really no rules, you’ve just got to make something. Every week after this I’ll post a thread for weekly updates, and then on the last day of the month a final update...
I’ll answer first: One thing that I do that helps my work environment feel a little nicer is I have a stuffed Totoro on my desk, a nice-smelling candle, and a few tasty snacks in my drawer. I also very quietly play video game music or ambience to remind myself of my hobbies that I like 😊...
I plan my diary a week in advance so I have all my lunch breaks in. I’m terrible at making myself work without breaks so the reminders help me to do it. I also listen to podcasts (or music when I’m working from home) and make myself go and eat lunch by the river so I have a solid hour away from everyone else. I struggle with being around people all day and having to constantly be ‘on’ do that time is precious.
With the simultaneous rollout of restrictions on account sharing and price increases/addition of advertising, I’m cutting back severely on streaming services....
I cancelled Netflix a few months ago and that was my only subscription out of the main ones (I currently have a subscription to Nextup which is a comedy streaming platform but that’s it). I haven’t missed it much as there’s not been anything on there that I’ve been keen to watch. If there ever is I’m sure I can find another way to watch it. I find I am using my free channel streaming apps more though (BBC iPlayer/Channel4, etc).
not much to report, however i i have completed my reading goal for the year (35 books) with several months to spare thanks to The Red Corner: The Rise and Fall of Communism in Northeastern Montana
I have that problem with most things- too many books I want to read, too many games I want to play, too many shows/films I want to watch. And no energy to do any of it so it’s back to watching the same thing I’ve seen dozens of times before.
It’s ok mostly. Having a new choir on a Monday is taking some getting used to as I’m more tired than I used to be on a Tuesday (and that’s without the insomnia). Saw my mum and the dog earlier which was nice and spent the weekend looking after my sister’s animals for her.
Having a one on one meeting with my director tomorrow about the future of part of my role as it’s all changing (again), she’s lovely but I’m still nervous. It feels like I can’t go a month without some change at work and for someone who doesn’t generally cope well with change/has a tough time mentally this time of year it’s definitely testing me. Doing some tough music in both choirs too which is great but it’s not as relaxing when you have to think about it.
Is part of the problem the nature of the goal maybe? 8 hours is a long timeframe even for neurotypical folk. Maybe work your way up to it, especially while you’re adjusting to new meds?
Feel free to ignore me though, I know you weren’t looking for advice.
Howdy y’all! I’m hoping to run a make something month in October either here or in Creative. The idea is that a bunch of people all make something, doesn’t matter what, throughout the month. Each week I’ll make a post where we can share progress and discuss, and at the end of the month you can post your final creation(s)...
a bit of a late post today but i’ve been exceedingly busy working on some important stuff on the side and that’s taken up most of my time. things are going pretty good currently and are generally productive.
I’m ok. Think I’m getting a cold which isn’t great, but I’m hoping I can fight it off with enough orange juice (I know it doesn’t work but I’ll take any kind of placebo effect). It’s nice and rainy here so starting to feel autumny which is nice
we’re so back. anyways as you can tell by the other pinned post, we’ve been a little busy with a lot of stuff on the backend and that’s probably going to continue into the foreseeable future
Mixed bag so far. It’s been hot over here and I’ve barely slept so feel like hell. Auditioned for a new choir this evening and got in which was nice, it’s a great choir but just annoying that it’s the opposite side of the city.
Seriously considering getting an ebike now that they’ve ended one of the escooter trials here. Hard to know where to start though, not had a bike since I was a teenager.
That’s great news! Sometimes I think things are better without a ‘conversation’ if you know what I mean. They can see you’re happy as you are and you don’t necessarily have to put pressure on yourself to explain anything.
Yesterday, you probably saw this informal post by one of our head admins (Chris Remington). This post lamented some of the difficulties we’re running into with the site at this point, and what the future might hold for us. This is a more formal post about those difficulties and the way we currently see things....
Thanks for giving such a comprehensive overview. I would definitely miss Beehaw if it went but I totally understand the rationale of it happens. Can’t say I would 100% follow but only because I keep forgetting to browse all of the apps I have at the moment, without adding one more. Depends how much of a mess Lemmy becomes I guess.
I often daydream about how society would be if we were not forced by society to pigeon hole ourselves into a specialized career for maximizing the profits of capitalists, and sell most of our time for it....
I would do loads of degrees. History, English, Psychology, Politics, Spanish, etc. Having the brain space to focus on learning would be amazing. I did my masters part time while working full time and it was a nightmare. Glad I did it but I couldn’t do my best as I was bogged down in work stuff.
I would also like to learn more languages. I do a bit of Spanish and Danish when I can but I rarely have the mental energy after work.
I’ve definitely turned into the paranoid nutcase within my friend group in recent years, I hate that everything is “smart” nowadays requiring an app/internet connection & account, just to do basic things that didn’t require any of that before....
This is probably unhelpful as it doesn’t exist anymore, but I used to love Jinni, that was essentially that. Would give good recommendations, found some great French films I never would have seen otherwise
I was talking to my friend how much I’ve been craving lobster 2 days ago. They now have lobster at my grocery store - they haven’t had lobster in years. Last winter I was talking about how much I like goose over Turkey for Christmas dinner and suddenly they had frozen goose and they literally never had goose before....
A lovely thought. Might not be effective in big city centres though, when I was living in London people were always trying to hand you things. You get resistant very quickly.
Not a reason not to do it, just try not to take it personally if you get rebuffed.
Also I love the wildflower card idea someone else mentioned
Singing can be surprisingly expensive. My fees for 1 year with two choirs is almost £350, plus extra for hiring/buying sheet music, transport to and from rehearsals and tours. Plus the dinner I have in town before rehearsal (it’s only itsu but it mounts up). Oh and a concert dress (hopefully I only need the one this year), that was £80.
LOL? lol
My son asked me if I would play league of legends with him, so tried it for the first time. So much going on!...
