Somewhat. I’ll use myself as an example.

When I first came to Lemmy, I was more defensive than I realized. I had gotten used to aggressive, obnoxious behavior. Soon, I noticed that wasn’t an accepted norm here. It only took a couple days to realize, but I needed a few weeks to actually get out of the habit. In those early days, I’m sure I brought some toxicity with me.

Now, though, I don’t create, feed, or encourage toxic comments. I just assume it’s an honest mistake, poor choice of words, or someone whose primary language isn’t English. If I choose to reply, I’m friendly, and give them the benefit of the doubt. If a comment seems deliberately rude or trolling, I don’t engage at all.

Also, how nice is it to be able to give (or get) the benefit of the doubt?!? You can make a spelling error without getting three or four pedantic screeds! I didn’t realize how much I missed basic civility until I rediscovered it here!

Whoever decided to name the website “set phasers to lol” deserves to be left on Ferenginar with a bad credit score.

For a second I confused Among Us with The Last of Us. I thought that was a pretty messed up suggestion for a little kid lol

You’re not doing anything wrong. As far as the name caller is concerned, find a way to respond to her politely yet firmly. Don’t sink to her level, or create reasons for others to criticize your behavior, but don’t take her abuse, either.

Perhaps act surprised if she brings it up again. “I told you that I don’t buy things from bars, and that I’d continue this behavior. What is unclear about that?” You have explained yourself as thoroughly as you need to. Don’t let her put you on the defensive. If she wants to make it an issue, that’s her problem. It’s her turn to explain herself.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

This vague “higher power/afterlife” stuff affects everything, regardless of player choices. Individuals, businesses, and entire nations make enormous decisions based on something that you won’t even confirm exists. Even the fan-made wikis and FAQs are unclear and contradictory. WTF.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I avoid automatic payments like the plague. I never give insurance companies, utilities, credit companies, etc. permission to withdraw from my account. All it takes is one underpaid office drone to make a mistake, and you’re overcharged a thousand dollars. You can (probably) get the money back, but not without a time consuming hassle.

Ever notice that billing mistakes on paper bills are virtually never in your favor? In my experience, I’ve always been overcharged, and never undercharged. I don’t expect automatic payments to be any different.

I let them mail me paper bills, which I then pay through my bank’s website. When the payment is made, I write the confirmation number on the bill itself. Yes, it’s more cumbersome, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay. There’s a verifiable paper trail, and I’m completely in control. Since it’s my money, I deserve to be.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That would be a very reassuring feature to have! People like me might reconsider automatic payments if that was a law in the US.

Beehaw isn’t reddit, where one can get away with being a horrible person as long as one doesn’t technically break the rules. The beehaw mods don’t tolerate Nazi bootlickers, even if they’re polite bootlickers.

Creating this thread won’t solve anything. If you have a question or concern, the beehaw mods are very open and easy to communicate with.

I was wondering if Judge Reinhold and that guy with the mustache would be in it… and there they were at the very end. I might actually give this one a chance!

I don’t even know what ISO 8601 is, but I agree with the sentiment

How to introduce 5 year old niece to new things without 3 year old nephew feeling left out?

I’ve got a niece (5) and nephew (3). The niece is really good about finding ways to entertain herself and the nephew will always try and take it for himself and intrude, usually not in a compromising sort of way. Obviously, this is pretty typical kid behavior overall....

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Your niece will probably brag to your nephew about the cool thing that she did, and rub it in that he was too young. That’s what siblings do. This is especially true if he’s ruined things in the past, and she’s harboring some resentment, which she almost certainly is.

I agree that it’s unfair to hold her back, but being left out and being forgotten are two very different things. Spend quality time with him, niece excluded, doing an activity that he will enjoy, or that he has chosen.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

The only thing I like that involves him is that Lucy Lawless calls him “peanut”.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

As far as I’m concerned, being called “boy Xena” is an enormous compliment, and Sorbo is far from worthy.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I read something about that a while ago. If I recall correctly, it was intended to be a franchise, but Master and Commander was so incredibly expensive that they decided against it.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

A few years ago I would have said Unbreakable.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That’s surprising. Master and Commander came out in 2003, years before the first MCU film was released.

I'm starting to see some serious downsides to being able to see who downvotes you. (kbin.social)

A few days ago I downvoted someone's comment, and the next day I happened to notice every single comment I've ever made had at least one downvote. All from the person I dared to downvote the ONE time. I straight up asked why they did it, and they seem to think I'm an "obvious" troll account that "apparently just exist to...

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

You’re asking this in a thread where someone describes exactly how it’s an issue for them.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

The same thing happened to me. The downvotes don’t bother me nearly as much as knowing that trolls can stalk us like that. It’s creepy. That’s the real issue.

Everyone telling you not to care about downvotes is missing the point.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, trolls really care about being “called out”. Trolls can’t stand negative attention, so be sure to tell lots of people who they are and what they did!

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Looking at post histories isn’t stalking. That take would be a bit paranoid. Please don’t put words in my mouth.

Abusing someone’s post history to harass them is stalking, though.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That’s even weirder. I’m sorry to hear that.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

In your interpretation, maybe. I just think it’s obnoxious and rude to do it to all of someone’s comments. If someone genuinely disagrees with what I’ve posted, that’s not a problem.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Or deliberately misinterpret what’s being said, either radically or just subtly enough to make their obnoxious “point”

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Right? Leave me a comment telling me why you disagree! Maybe you have a point of view that I hadn’t considered. Maybe I got a fact wrong - I’d rather be corrected than keep on being wrong! I’m a big boy; I can take it.

Or, maybe I’m just being a jerk and all someone needs to do is talk some sense into me. By itself, a downvote doesn’t tell anyone anything. Reply! Talk to me!

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Okay. Yeah, I was being sarcastic, but now I see we had different kinds of trolls in mind. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Making the reader understand nonlinear time by describing the way humans experience linear time (traveling along train tracks, at a set speed, only able to look forward) was absolutely brilliant. Hell, I still sorta remember that part and I haven’t read the book in decades.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Sometimes I wonder if horrible people can be great storytellers because their outlook on life is so different from our own. That doesn’t excuse or justify their behavior, but still, I wonder.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

The “fucking excuse me??” panel is gold all by itself.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I don’t care whether he ever understands it, but I’m totally on board with the “fuck off” part.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

A friend of mine drives an SUV. I’m getting him a sticker of Jason for the back window, with an “arm” holding a bloody machete that attaches to the back window wiper. When the wiper is on, it looks like Jason is hacking away with his machete.

I think it’s kinda corny, but he loves stuff like that!

If only there was a government agency with both the will and the authority to do something. Oh well.

@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I’ve heard about the “belt and road initiative” a few times, but I don’t know exactly what it is. Does anyone have a link to a good summary?

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

The pain comes from not expecting the post to be deleted. By telling us that you’re going to delete it in a day, you’re taking away the unpleasant surprise.

@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I would have LOVED to airlock deadbeats. I say this as a former hotel employee with over a decade of front desk experience.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

You’re right, it does. I guess since various law enforcement agencies already have the footage, they can get away with it… but yeah, since public volunteers helped in so many cases, the end result is the same.

Blurring the faces of the protestors may not break the letter of the law, but it definitely violates the spirit. I’d like to see a skilled legal team make an official complaint.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That was my initial thought, but then I read the article.

DOJ does have that footage. But online sleuths have proven to be an extremely valuable resource in identifying Jan. 6 participants, using the CCTV footage to determine which rioters entered the building and then building a database with the clearest photos of those suspects. They have often used facial recognition for leads and have aided in hundreds of cases against Jan. 6 defendants.

Blurring the footage isn’t the empty gesture I thought it was. All he’s doing is exposing the layout of the building while protecting insurrectionists. Bear in mind that the building was deliberately designed in a confusing way for security purposes.

Fuck this guy.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I have no idea who this man is, and I suspect that learning about him would only infuriate me - especially if (when?) the legal process turns out to be slow and inadequate.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I can’t speak for others, but as I see it, the Israeli government is committing atrocities on a daily basis. So is Hamas. I’m against senseless violence in general, but since the IDF has the upper hand and has killed the most civilians in the current conflict, I’m more likely to complain about them.

You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Gay? Ancient Greece. Person of color? Just pick someplace that won’t have significant contact with different races during your lifetime.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Then ask someone who knows more about history than me! :)

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

As an American, I wholeheartedly agree. I often wish I had a sturdier foundation in world history.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I’m an atheist and think this is genuinely funny.

Yeah, it oversimplifies things, but so what? Lots of jokes do that.

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I’m glad you pointed that out. It’s a good distinction to remember.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Additionally, see the essay Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex by Larry Niven

Overthinking? Yes, intentionally. Gross and funny? Also yes!

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

A sub? Diesel or nuclear?

Even though the number lost is only one, that’s a big deal.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Why did they even bother publishing this article?

I was hoping for specific, concrete examples. This is just a summary of the problem which also mentions some pending, unresolved lawsuits. The closest thing to “Good News” is this sentence:

As PEN America notes, growing public opposition to educational censorship targeting issues of race and LGBTQ+ identity could ultimately make such legislation less attractive to conservative lawmakers.

Translation: things suck, but they could get less terrible. Um… yay, I guess?

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Years ago, a coworker told me about someone famous who had died that morning. I don’t remember who, only that it was someone who I had heard good things about, was well liked, and seemed like a nice person.

I was actually sad to hear about it. I probably would have gone weeks without hearing about their death otherwise, and it wouldn’t have bothered me as much. Instead, my morning was ruined by someone who just wanted to be the first to tell people, and treated the news like it was merely another piece of trivia.

I decided right then and there not to share bad news without a reason. Sometimes people need to hear unpleasant things, of course, and I don’t dodge that responsibility. There’s no reason to pointlessly spread negativity, though, especially when the information isn’t particularly essential to anyone.

I don’t know why I typed that. It’s basically the exact opposite of what you asked. Uh… sorry!
