I’ve only seen two or three videos from this guy, but I like him. He’s thoughtful and tackles complex issues intelligently, but keeps things accessible.

I also appreciate him introducing me to the phrase “Black Lives Marketing”. It’s great to have a phrase for insincere empathy and inclusion done solely for profit.

That dipshit was so close to getting it, yet so far.

Menthol cigarette advertising was/is targeted heavily to black people. It’s possible that banning menthol will give people the nudge they need to quit, so it could end up helping black people more than average.

Yes. I had a science teacher devote a significant portion of a day’s lecture to that exact subject: the difference between accuracy and precision. You got it right.

For example, if you have a digital scale that displays weight to five decimal points, it’s precise. If that scale hasn’t been properly calibrated, though, it will give you a very precise number that isn’t accurate.

People who are barely making ends meet don’t usually buy new cars. They buy used. You can get something tolerable for a hell of a lot less than 30k.

Plus, if you’re poor, there’s a good chance you live in a shitty (maybe unsafe) neighborhood. You might not have a driveway, never mind a garage. If you leave your car to charge overnight, you have to worry about some asshole unplugging it, or even taking/vandalizing the extension cord.

Spinal implant allows Parkinson’s patient to walk for miles (www.engadget.com)

A Parkinson’s patient can now walk 6km (3.7 miles) thanks to an implant targeting the spinal cord. The Guardian reports that the man — 62-year-old “Marc” from Bordeaux, France — developed severe mobility impairments from the degenerative disease. “I practically could not walk anymore without falling frequently,...

Stuff like this should be great, but all I can think about is how capitalism will ruin it. Will they only make it an “service” available via subscription, and shut off your ability to walk if you don’t pay? Will it require expensive software updates, or only work if you’ve got wi-fi or a cellular connection? What happens to the patients if the company which owns this patented technology goes out of business?

Managing a chronic problem is much more profitable than curing it completely.

A large part of the American healthcare system is made of for-profit businesses. Capitalism and genuinely empathetic healthcare are mutually exclusive, and the parts that actually work for patients have only managed to do so because of a shit-ton of regulation. Regulation that corporations are constantly fighting and struggling to weaken. They buy politicians to help.

Pharmaceutical companies will claim that drug prices are high because R&D is so expensive, but that didn’t stop them from fighting for the right to advertise prescription drugs on TV. Last I read, only the U.S. and New Zealand allow that. Producing and airing those ads can cost millions. R&D is expensive, but apparently not so expensive that they can’t afford that. Capitalism does not have a conscience.

I’m a sad sack because I’ve seen (and am currently seeing) friends and family members get screwed by a system that allegedly exists to help them, but really just profits off their pain. I know I’ll probably end up being exploited, too.

“The world’s changed by average, ever day ordinary people who’ve had enough, who are willing to stand up for a country and a planet that is more humane, peaceful, and just. And that’s what I’m here to celebrate tonight,” Morello said. “Fans often ask, but what can I do? Let’s start with this: 1.) Dream big and don’t settle. 2.) Aim for the world you really want without compromise or apology, and 3.) Don’t wait for us. Rage is not here, but you are… If you got a boss, join a union. If you’re a student, start an underground paper. If you’re an anarchist, throw a brick. If you’re a soldier or a cop, follow your conscious, not your orders.”

Outstanding speech.

This is great advice for anyone looking to buy used and not new. Don’t buy someone else’s problems from Craigslist. If you can, buy something from a reputable source that includes a warranty.

I’m gonna sound like a shill, but fuck it. This is genuinely good and I don’t mind.

My DTTO case. They make great cases for iPads and Samsung tablets (I haven’t tried their iPhone ones). Yeah, every asshole makes iPad cases, but these are high quality while still being around $20. Unlike a lot of cases, they feel like they were actually designed for practical real-world use. For something this simple, details matter, and they got it right.

I used to get a random new case every year, but after finding these people by sheer luck, I won’t buy any other brand.

Ad over.

In America, circumcision is common whether you’re Jewish or not. This isn’t necessarily a religious question. Avoid jumping to conclusions, especially when it involves implying that someone is a bigot.

Antisemitism is heinous, which means it’s also a very serious charge to make. Throwing the word “antisemitism” around based on such weak evidence only dilutes it.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

This is asklemmy. The point is to be able to ask questions. If you think a question is stupid, just move on. Besides, enough other people have replied to suggest that the question was worth asking.

magnetosphere,

I think for many, ‘that’s just what we do’ is all the thought that goes into it.

magnetosphere,

This is a very personal question, and I know I’m not entitled to an answer, but curiosity has gotten the better of me: why was it required in your case?

This clearly isn’t a pleasant memory, so feel free to ignore me. Either way, thanks!

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Yikes. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I’m glad it hasn’t been a problem since, at least!

Now before you write me off as a basement dwelling Reddit moderator…

What an asshole. I’m so glad he’s someone she used to date, rather than is dating.

Look at her face. From my worst moments in the past, I can understand getting carried away and snapping the pic in the heat of the moment. Still, though, how the hell can you look at that pain and sadness, and then send the pic to her without realizing how badly you’ve hurt someone you care about? That was a priceless moment for him to STOP HIMSELF before making things worse, and he just bulldozed right past it. Fuck that guy.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I’m taking her story way too personally to be anything close to neutral. I thought that was clear, but okay.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I… wow. Thank you.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

You could be right. I just assumed the guy texted her the pic in order to emphasize his point.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Just try to set a good example. Name calling is not okay. If you disagree with something, be careful to argue against the idea, and don’t attack the person who posted it. (If it’s impossible to disagree with a post without attacking OP personally, just don’t reply at all.)

If something can be interpreted multiple ways, give people the benefit of the doubt. If you ask a question, make sure it’s not a loaded one, and try not to make any assumptions. Don’t be afraid to admit that you’re wrong or don’t know something. If you’re so invested in a topic that you can’t discuss it without losing your cool, feel free to skip the thread entirely. Apologize when it’s called for.

TL;DR do your bit to normalize civil discourse. That alone will encourage others to do the same.

If someone defied gravity when confused, I’d feel pretty comfortable saying that wasn’t normal, regardless of race.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

This can’t be right. It’s far too simple and logical. I’m a native English speaker, and I’m used to grammar that’s nonsensical and inconsistent.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I just responded quickly without thinking.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with 🤓 as long as you own it, which you have!

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

From the title by itself, I was expecting a simple change to skin tone, which would have been bad enough. Reading the story and looking at the pic made me realize that things are much, much worse. What the FUCK.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

People are allowed to be upset by racism even if the target doesn’t seem to care. The labor and image rights are also a major part of the story.

Besides, according to the article, Costello has been accused of shit like this before. I wouldn’t be so quick to say that the reporter decided to “invent the racist motivation”.

It’s an interesting question. To me, it only makes sense that AI companies should respect artist copyrights - especially since AIs purpose is to replace and minimize/eliminate the need for artists. On the other hand, licensing fees would quickly add up and be absolutely enormous. Only the biggest, wealthiest corporations (the ones we love to hate) could afford to invest in AI. Small, new companies won’t be able to afford it.

(Sorry if this is covered in the article. I haven’t read it yet. It’s late and I’m falling asleep!)

Edit: okay, now I’ve read it, and the situation is about as bad as I was expecting.

Meta’s argument that copyright holders wouldn’t get much money anyway makes me want to punch someone. It’s about respecting creators, not just money, you dipshits! Congrats on missing the point!

To balance things out, we’ve got Andreessen Horowitz crying “won’t someone please think about the billionaires?!?” That one made me laugh.

Adobe gets points for actually citing case law. I still don’t agree with their reasoning, but I appreciate the effort to keep the discussion professional.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That’s a good point. You’re entirely correct. I had a much simpler idea in mind - I was only thinking of small, independent artists who posted their images online and were the copyright holders of their own work.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I must be lucky. Even at the height of its notoriety, I haven’t had any trouble with Apple Maps (yet).

I’m the Hub Don. If your quest is related to organized crime involving hubs, apparently I’m the guy to talk to.

It’s cool. I didn’t get where I am today by being a psychopath. Don’t try to mess with my business and we’ll get along fine. Probably.

X runs ‘timeline takeover’ ad promoting anti-trans film (techcrunch.com)

Thursday on X (Twitter), all users saw the same pinned topic under the “What’s happening?” sidebar. Followers and online friends are very important to some people, but at what point do remaining Twitter users give up?

I understand there are some pathetic individuals who agree with Musk. I’m not talking about them. I mean the ones who should know better, but haven’t left yet.

What does it take for people to realize “I’m helping an utterly wretched man keep his business alive?” Don’t they realize they’re burning their all-important reputations by staying? Is it worth it to them? Why?

I did not say “weird”. I said “seems pointless”.

I was careful to avoid judgmental or insulting language. My phrasing suggested that the issue might be ignorance on my part, not because someone else was being “weird”.

I’d appreciate it if you didn’t put words in my mouth.
