Buffalox,

Massive losses all around for the Russians, but at least they didn’t lose another sub.
Numbers such as the ones we see today, seems to me to confirm that the quality of Russian forces has declined.

Buffalox,

Pretty heavy losses for the Russians.
I’ve speculated here before that this winter may become very different from last year. Where things were relatively calm, because Russia was busy building defenses, and Ukraine prepared for the spring offensive, in the hope that western equipment they waited for would help it become successful.
But Zelenskyj later said the delay was a mistake, and the Russians are desperately trying to secure some sort of victory for Putin.
Maybe Putin wants it for the election, which I kind of doubt, since it rigged anyway. Maybe Putin demands victories because he is a megalomaniac, that believes he can force his will to become reality? Whatever it is, it looks like the Russians will not wait calmly until after the election.
We can only hope that Putin’s insanity will help Ukraine win.

Buffalox,

Yes aid to Ukraine is definitely not going well currently. A few countries continue to support Ukraine, but AFAIK military aid is now only a tenth of what it was a year ago.

Buffalox,

But for the time being, the unreasonable ban on using weapons provided by Western partners, foremostly by the United States, for strikes on the territory of the russian federation is still in force.

Really? I thought that was an urban legend. Sounds silly Ukraine wouldn’t be allowed to attack military installations used for attacks into Ukraine. If true I hope they change that ASAP.

Buffalox, (edited )

Maybe it’s a sort of attempt to avoid escalation, but I’m far from sure that’s a good idea. Russia only takes and gives nothing. Why should we grant them any favors?
“We” as in the West/Allies/NATO/Europe, and of course USA.

Buffalox,

If when Putin dies, it was allowed to visit to piss on his grave as a tourist attraction, I’d consider it. 😆

Buffalox,

What is the Hungarian bribe?

Buffalox,

Thank you Sweden. Hope to have you in NATO soon.

Buffalox,

With 1300 personel lost, I think we have a new record today? At least I don’t recall seeing higher numbers.

Buffalox,

Wow thank you, I tried to figure a way to look it up, but it didn’t work.
How did you find this?

Buffalox,

Thanks and you’re welcome. 😀 👍

Buffalox,

I noticed yesterday, but never got around to posting it, but the short time it has taken to go from 300k to 340 k losses for Russia is less than 1½ month which is insane!
www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/10/31/7426472/
On Oktober 31 Russia passed 300k and yesterday only 43 days later they already added 40k to that.
That’s averaging 937 per day for almost 1½ month, compared to 488 for the 616 days before that.
So Russia is accepting doubling their casualties in their attempt to take Avdiivka!

PS:
Putin just held his reelection speech, we will see if things calm down after that.
I suspect Russia may keep on, for Putin to have a victory for the election.

Buffalox,

Yes we will see if they are slowing down for the winter, 800 is still high.
But imagine the strategic ineptitude, if Russia honestly thought they had a chance of taking Avdiivka so he could use it in his reelection speech!

Buffalox,

My father is 86, and he says he never had a hangover, and still doesn’t get them.
I sometimes get hangover often within an hour of drinking just 1 or 2 beers or a single glass of wine. I did that too when I was in my 20’s, but back then it was mostly wine that did it.

Buffalox,

Because he is a complete loony extreme right-wing intolerant christian fanatic POS.
I used to like Andromeda, but now I can’t stand the sight of him as Dylan Hunt.

Buffalox,

Thank you, that explains a lot.

Buffalox,

I think in general, normal decency will get you through. But for sopuli they are:
sopuli.xyz
They are stated on the right in a normal web browser.

Buffalox, (edited )

Yes:
lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

We need a rule that says “no sympathy for Russian soldiers”

You won’t find a lot of that here anyway. But it would not be a good rule, because there may be occasions where it’s deserved. Remember Russia also forces Ukrainians from occupied territories to fight for them too! Some are drafted against their will.

Buffalox,

From what you state I agree, sounds like there should at least have been notice.
Personally I don’t watch those things, they are anecdotal and I don’t think it’s healthy to watch.

Buffalox,

What’s the point of sending me that link?

Buffalox, (edited )

This sadly may be the last update I post.
There are some really weird mod shenanigans going on,
A moderator has deleted everything posted here today, without explanation.
And allegedly banning a user for asking about the rules for posting?
And moderator @Burstar send me this weird link: lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/2712274
???
Anyways, I don’t feel comfortable in participating under these conditions, so unless proper explanation is given, I’m out.

Edit:
I’ve been messaged by the moderator, and apparently there is a bug, where rule #1 should be pinned, but for some reason it is not visible to all.
In short that rule is something along the lines of: “No sympathy for russian combatants”.
I find that acceptable, and hopefully we will meet here again. :)

Buffalox,

Thank you, :) I’ll have a look around and see. This is kind of the “original”, and only one with any activity when I started using Lemmy.

Buffalox,

I am happy to say my intention is to continue here. :) The problems yesterday were kind of a misunderstanding, due to a bug in lemmy, that causes a rule that is pinned for visibility, to not be shown for everybody.

Buffalox,

The first part of the article talks about how much hasn’t changed

As I see it, you are reading it wrong, the first part is mostly about how the sanctions have been slow to work, because Russian economy has been more resilient than expected.
The part about 65% less medicine available in hospitals, is absolutely among the things that have already happened.
Russia having shortages, causing a growing share of adulterated products, is also already happening.

Half of russia’s money is from oil and gas.

Absolutely true, and Putin has made budget with 22% increased revenue next year, to help finance a 70 increase in security spending.
Luckily the oil prices are currently falling, because USA pumps out extra oil.
Putin just visited UAE and Saudi, because he is afraid they will start a price war with USA, meaning the prices could drop way more than they already have. This is “normal” Saudi behavior to control of the oil market, and squeeze out and bankrupt production that doesn’t have margins comparable to Saudi Arabia.

Buffalox,

May your dream come true.

Buffalox,

That’s how they state them. Probably as in the day the numbers are released, or the numbers as per but not including today, after yesterdays numbers are added.
Also numbers today can have numbers from previous days added, if they were only reported or confirmed yesterday. So the daily numbers are not actually necessarily events from yesterday, but rather what was reported/confirmed yesterday.

Buffalox,

IDK how many tanks they had, some estimated 10k before the war.
forbes.com/…/how-many-tanks-does-russia-have-in-u…

Some estimates put the Russian grand total as high as 12,420 tanks

It may be they had 3300 operational at the beginning of the war, but apparently they’ve been able to make a lot more ready, maybe they even have better production than we know of. I’ve seen estimates of only 10 new tanks produced per month. But I’m not sure that’s accurate.

Obviously Russia had massive amounts of equipment before the war, I too sure hope they will run out soon.

Buffalox,

Putin should be announcing his run for reelection in 10 days. I bet this insanity will continue for at least that long.
Then we will have to see if it continues after that.

Buffalox,

I agree, and I think it will. It’s not just the losses, personel in particular, Putin is really crazy, and is planning to mobilize 170000 extra, because of the “aggression” from Nato. And Russia has made a budget for 2024 with increased spending on the war by 70%!
reuters.com/…/putin-approves-big-military-spendin…
That means Russia will spend 40% of their entire national budget on “security” in 2024, and that’s made possible by an insane projection of 22% increased tax/oil revenue from a smaller economy?! That alone could break the Russian economy.

Buffalox,

Many say China economy is currently a bit slow too. Hopefully that will help Ukraine a little.

Buffalox,

As I’ve speculated here earlier, with more than 1000 lost personnel, it looks like Putin continues the attack on Avdiivka despite winter weather.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue to see high numbers compared to last winter. Because Putin want’s a win. Even if it is a very bad military decision.

Buffalox,

Because traditionally Putin holds a speech to the nation when he announces he is running for reelection in March 2024. And he wants to be able to brag about something in that speech, and he wants to convince Russians that the war is going as planned. It’s hard to believe, but their rhetoric has been for a while, that the war is basically over, and Russia has won it already!!!
Maybe that sounds self contradictory, but that’s a strategy Trump also uses all the time, and it has worked well beyond imagination in USA too.
Putin may also use this tactic to discourage the west from helping Ukraine, he is trying to make it look like Russia can keep going for as long as it takes, so this will have no end, unless we let Russia get what they want.
