There’s OpenStreetMap for maps, and Bluetooth audio for music.

Linux distro for a laptop I might barely use (lemmy.sdf.org)

For years, I’ve gotten by with a desktop at home running Arch and a work laptop running Kubuntu. Now I want a laptop that’s not owned by my job, so that I can use a computer outside the house and not have my workplace own the IP rights of whatever I do on it. My workload is basically just going to be emacs and web browsing,...

Not enough people here saying Debian. /j

I want to move to Linux but I need to be able to access my apps that are not supported (kbin.social)

Hey, I use the Adobe Suite for daily use to build and develop posts and videos for multiple people and can't have my workflow slow down by learning a new application, I've looked into Linux a few times and want to really move over in the future but due to it not having support for Adobe, I'm not sure what to do....

As others have said, dual boot or VM works for Adobe Software. If you go with VMs, you should probably research GPU passthrough.

For syncing, I recommend Syncthing (syncthing.net).

You can play a lot of Steam games with Proton (check out protonDB for what works).

Also have you decided on a distro already?

I personally have some telemetry on. Just like you, I like to think I’m helping the devs.

You can, just go to the sidebar and press Pair new device.

ext4 works perfectly fine for me and most people.

I usually just carry around a few ISOs with Ventoy. More specifically, a Win10 ISO, Ubuntu ISO, Arch ISO, Tails (not iso but who cares), and a few others that I wanna be able to install if I ruin my current system to the point I can’t boot it properly. I just noticed I still need a Fedora ISO. After watching the LTT video too, I’m looking into all of those cool utilities too, don’t have any recommendations yet tho.

From what I know, they are one of the companies endorsed by the FSF, so I’m assuming they’re good as in good with Linux and open source. For the quality of their products, I assume they work at least good enough. The specs of their PCs seem fine for the prices.

Overall, they seem to be good, especially good if you went far down the libre rabbit hole. I want to note here that they don’t seem to donate to / sponsor any open-source organizations (like KDE), unlike Tuxedo.

Also remember that the stuff that’s being talked about is probably more known around the community, so it’s possible that just not that many people know about them.

I personally would probably buy their accessories, but maybe not their computers. This is my personal opinion that I made from ~30 minutes of research and a bit of previous knowledge from a youtube video I watched yesterday, you should make up your own with more research before deciding to buy from them.

There’s a donation link at the bottom of the sidebar, and Iirc, the admins said that they’re able to cover the cost of hosting (currently).

I've used Linux lite and Fedora(Gnome edition) so far, and trying to hop Distro(plus, I lost my actual boot drive. Not to worry, I know I've left it in my friend's house, so the data is safe. Plus, no important data were on it in the first place).
Considering the recent incidents with the Red Hat Enterprises, I'm not sure if I should go with any of their distributions. Which would be a great OS for me, you guys think? @thelinuxEXP @linux @Linux @linuxmagazine @linux_gaming

I think you should take a look at these:

openSUSE, Pop!_OS, Mint, Nobara, Endeavour, Arco, Arch

According to wiki.archlinux.org/title/security#Use_Wayland

6.5 Use Wayland

Prefer using Wayland over Xorg. Xorg’s design predates modern security practices and is considered insecure by many. For example, Xorg applications may record keystrokes while inactive.

If you must run Xorg, it is recommended to avoid running it as root. Within Wayland, the Xwayland compatibility layer will automatically use rootless Xorg.

X is less secure.

Workspaces / Virtual Desktops – do you use them on your laptop, desktop, or both?

About 4 years ago I got a 13.3" Thinkpad laptop to replace an old Chromebook for portable development, and installed Arch + i3 on it (btw). After a bit of ricing the configs, it started feeling really homey. I love using workspaces here! They feel perfectly suited for laptop screens which have minimal space, allowing me to keep...

I have a 3x3 desktop grid in plasma, it works great for me on my laptop, but I don’t think I could use it without touchpad gestures. I would probably have less or none if I had a big screen.

Try turning your internet off and on again, deactivating any VPNs you might be running, restarting your phone, or even reinstalling Jerboa.

If none of this helps, you may just have bad internet at your current location, try moving closer to your router. If even that won’t help, you probably have generally bad internet, try a public or a friend’s WiFi.

I’d say aliases and functions are your friends here.

I’m horrible at explaining, but if you are asexual for example, you can still fall in love with people, but not want to fck them. The other way around works too, say you’re aromantic, you can want to fck people, but not want to go into a relationship with them. For most people (afaik) romantic and sexual attraction are the same, for example, bisexual people are likely also biromantic. This is a very simplified explanation, hope it helps.

Thanks! Also the romantic was a typo I overlooked.

I wouldn’t really call it stable, more just stable enough

does Linux run fine on low-end laptops?

Linux runs fine on a potato lol

One I haven't seen here is Arco Linux. It's designed as a kind of learning path from getting to know basic Linux concepts to being able to install Arch on your own, so I think it's a pretty good early choice, tho probably not that good for the first choice.

General recommendation is that you choose something with good community support or at least good documentation. You might also not want a rolling release, because they tend to be more on the unstable side.

backhdlp,
@backhdlp@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Impossible they have too much space

Scope: I’d say yes. Content Warnings: Absolutely! General Post Flairs: This would be good. Pronouns: This should be a strong recommendation. General User Flairs: can’t think of any replacements Image Descriptions: Hell yes, accessibility is pog.
