Starfield design lead says players are "disconnected" from how games are actually made: "Don't fool yourself into thinking you know why it is the way it is" (www.gamesradar.com)

apparently this is in response to a few threads on Reddit flaming Starfield—in general, it’s been rather interesting to see Bethesda take what i can only describe as a “try to debate Starfield to popularity” approach with the game’s skeptics in the past month or two. not entirely sure it’s a winning strategy,...

ahal,

Lol people gave Starfield a pass? My feeds were (and still are, see this thread) overwhelming hatred towards it.

The so-called “supporters” aren’t even arguing that it’s a great game. Their argument is “it’s not that bad”.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads (kbin.social)

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

ahal,

Lots of people here worried about Meta destroying their space, and rightly so.

But I see this from another lens. This is what success for the fediverse looks like. The fediverse was never going to compete with the big players in social media. But it can influence them to be less shitty.

Is this a threat to the fediverse as we know it? Absolutely. But we have the opportunity to make things better for several orders of magnitude more people than are currently here. To me that is a risk worth taking and fighting for.

I’m not saying everyone should roll over and do whatever Meta wants. There’s going to be tension and we are going to need to fight them tooth and nail on many things. But let’s at least participate.

Firefox PiP doesn't stay on top in GNOME

I am using fedora silverblue and in the native version of Firefox, the picture in picture window does not have always on top enabled. Is there anyway to change a setting such that always on top is enabled by default. I know it is supported on gnome+fedora because the flatpak version(I downloaded to test this behaviour) has this...

ahal,

This is a limitation of Wayland, aiui it’s not currently possible for apps to set this by default. You can right click and select always on top for now.

ahal,

Yes I switched from YNAB to Actual Budget and this is the closest thing to what OP is looking for.

That said the interface isn’t as polished, there are no bank imports outside Europe, mobile apps are discontinued and reports are sorely lacking.

But if those aren’t deal breakers it has all the same core features and has been pretty solid for me.

ahal,

Imagine if your roommate could just get into all your accounts?

ahal,

Am I your coworker? In my case the dir was created by a poorly written Python script. I just banged out the rm -rf from muscle memory without pause.

ahal,

They force their warehouse workers to put pronouns on their name tags.

ahal,

which is exactly what the fediverse doesn’t want

Did the fediverse tell you that itself?

There’s no single vision of the fediverse. There’s no arbiter of truth on the fediverse. So count me in the camp of people who would absolutely love an app on the fediverse that tailors content to me.

ahal,

This has much broader consequences than just France. Imagine if France succeeded in passing this, and browsers had to implement capabilities for government mandated blocklists.

You can be sure governments across the globe would be rushing through similar legislation as fast as they can.

ahal,

There’s the built-in Firefox translate now, though it currently only supports a handful of languages (more coming soon)

ahal,

I love this, but shouldn’t they vote as a block, but proportionally for the parties who sponsor the bill? :p

I’d change a couple things though:

  1. Allow members to vote independently on issues not impacting PR. While shooting down all legislation might force someone’s hand, it would likely turn the party into the bad guys and possibly hold back positive change.
  2. Call the party the “Reform Party” (will sound more palatable to the right).
  3. Run on the promise that if they form government, they will enact PR, immediately call a new election. Not sure if they should disband as there are tons of other problems with our democracy than just PR.
ahal,

You can’t give UBI to a subset of people. Then it’s not universal anymore.

But if you did give artists a basic income, how much art would they need to produce to qualify? What qualifies as art? The law doesn’t do well with those kinds of questions.

Better to implement true UBI. Give it to everyone, and afford more security to folks who want to focus on art.

ahal,

Ah my bad, then I agree!

ahal,

Why bother even trying when you can be sure you’ll be bullied by whatever monopolies dominate your industry while our politicians stand idly by.

Our governments are only interested in keeping the established companies healthy and strong. It’s mind bogglingly short sighted.

Drone (quadcopter) suggestions?

Hi guys! Back in the day I bought a DJI Mavic (1st gen) for my travels, when they were not so absolutely obnoxious about sending ALL your flight logs back to the motherland. As the obnoxiousness increased, I ended up installing a CFW (Merlin, I think) on the drone, so I could fly unrestricted and with no logged-in account on the...

ahal,

Mozilla’s privacy not included guide reviews three drones: foundation.mozilla.org/en/…/toys-games/

No idea if those are what you’re looking for, but perhaps you can get an idea of the practices those 3 companies do in general (one of them is DJI so would be good for comparison so least)

ahal,

We got tail bones too, close enough.

ahal,

I’ve been working there a long time, there are valid complaints, but poor work culture isn’t one I’ve normally heard. Of course it depends a lot on the specific manager, so I won’t deny specific anecdotal experiences. But generally I’d say the work culture is quite healthy.

ahal,

In addition to comparing against cost of rentals, there’s also opportunity cost with investing. If someone has a mortgage averaging 3-6%, and invests at 5-10%… that’s a great strategy. Why wouldn’t you push the amortization as long as possible?

ahal,

Lol, Thom Yorke makes arrogant comment. More news at 11.

Also I disagree so therefore it’s officially no longer objective.

ahal,

Green energy was practically synonymous with progressiveness when Tesla was first gaining popularity.

ahal,

Those are the way.

I bought a bulk bag of the shitty kind. Worst purchase of my life. I was too stubborn to throw them out and it took a decade+ to get through them all.

ahal,

Am I the only one who came to Lemmy for more of that shit?

ahal,

Roughly 95% of all shows.

ahal,

I live in Ontario and Quebec was undergoing a referendum to leave Canada when I was a kid. I asked my Dad if Canada would still be the second biggest country if Quebec left.

He was impressed by the insightful question, but in reality I thought Quebec was just the tiny town where my Grandma lived.

ahal,

Is it FUD if it’s a direct quote from Nissan’s privacy policy?

ahal,

By operating the car, you hereby grant us permission to perform the services outlined herein.

ahal,

Protip, if you ask someone a question, and then follow that up with “Or am I insane?”. You’re heavily implying that they in fact are the ones who are insane.

Maybe you legitimately didn’t know that. In case you didn’t, now you know.

ahal,

I think they might actually be partisan. After I took the Trump vaccine I felt significantly more right wing. Looking forward to this new Biden vaccine so I can get back to my normal political views.

ahal,

But you could never have vertical tabs without extensions before. And you still can now.

ahal,

Hello, member of Mozilla release engineering here. We have no association with that PPA and the contacts are not mozilla.com email addresses.

ahal,

Oh no, I can no longer tell if you are serious or making fun of the people who are serious.

ahal,

The term spamming actually traces back to the food spam.

ahal,

I think at that point it ceases to be Firefox. I guess the government could go after whoever is distributing the modified browser.

ahal,

Post viral syndromes are phenomena that have been well documented long before COVID. You can find any number of scientific papers on the matter if you only cared to look.

ahal, (edited )

Another point is the perception of progress. We all enjoy a progress bar that gradually fills up to one that sits at 20% then jumps to 100. It reduces our anxiety.

ahal,

I don’t think people really know what gas lighting is :p.

Relatedly, whether you understand the term or not, go watch the movie Gaslight where it comes from. Great film.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

ahal,

For those who might not have the best English: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan#prefix

ahal,

It’s also great for bug fixes. Write that sucker first and you have an easy way to reproduce the issue and check whether it’s fixed.

ahal,

I used to equate Sync with Reddit too, but now I have a different perspective.

Reddit is nothing but a glorified link aggregator. Sync was my preferred way of viewing said list of links. Now that I have the exact same experience on Lemmy I’ve realized that Sync wasn’t Reddit, it was link aggregation and where those links come from doesn’t really matter.

It’s kind of poetic because that’s the promise of Lemmy. It doesn’t matter where the links are hosted.

ahal,

Ads aren’t the spirit and the philosophy of Lemmy

Says who? I’m just curious who decides what Lemmy’s philosophy is. Does that philosophy extend across all instances or only specific ones? Or is it baked into the source code somehow?

Personally I think ads are alright. But that’s just my philosophy.

ahal, (edited )

Sync is quite customizable. Play around in the settings and you can get it close to RiF. Source: switched from RiF to Sync a couple years back.

ahal,

Was $26 CAD here.

ahal,

However in theory the more self sustaining the Foundation is, the less the Corp needs to support it.

ahal,

To get my kids to fall asleep at their bed time.

ahal,

Would you mind elaborating on your import pipeline? I was thinking of using email as a trigger as well, but thought it wouldn’t work too well.

ahal,

Thank you, that looks awesome!

Do your institutions send alerts with data in a consumable format? I’m in Canada, land of the shitty bank software and it seems I can only get PDFs from most places. I have one that doesn’t even let you download transactions outside of the monthly statement :(
