apparently this is in response to a few threads on Reddit flaming Starfield—in general, it’s been rather interesting to see Bethesda take what i can only describe as a “try to debate Starfield to popularity” approach with the game’s skeptics in the past month or two. not entirely sure it’s a winning strategy,...
With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...
Lots of people here worried about Meta destroying their space, and rightly so.
But I see this from another lens. This is what success for the fediverse looks like. The fediverse was never going to compete with the big players in social media. But it can influence them to be less shitty.
Is this a threat to the fediverse as we know it? Absolutely. But we have the opportunity to make things better for several orders of magnitude more people than are currently here. To me that is a risk worth taking and fighting for.
I’m not saying everyone should roll over and do whatever Meta wants. There’s going to be tension and we are going to need to fight them tooth and nail on many things. But let’s at least participate.
I am using fedora silverblue and in the native version of Firefox, the picture in picture window does not have always on top enabled. Is there anyway to change a setting such that always on top is enabled by default. I know it is supported on gnome+fedora because the flatpak version(I downloaded to test this behaviour) has this...
This is a limitation of Wayland, aiui it’s not currently possible for apps to set this by default. You can right click and select always on top for now.
Mastodon, the decentralized Twitter / X alternative, is adding lists to its Android app, according to a blog post from CEO and founder Eugen Rochko. Lists are available as part of the most recent Mastodon for Android update.
There’s no single vision of the fediverse. There’s no arbiter of truth on the fediverse. So count me in the camp of people who would absolutely love an app on the fediverse that tailors content to me.
This has much broader consequences than just France. Imagine if France succeeded in passing this, and browsers had to implement capabilities for government mandated blocklists.
You can be sure governments across the globe would be rushing through similar legislation as fast as they can.
I love this, but shouldn’t they vote as a block, but proportionally for the parties who sponsor the bill? :p
I’d change a couple things though:
Allow members to vote independently on issues not impacting PR. While shooting down all legislation might force someone’s hand, it would likely turn the party into the bad guys and possibly hold back positive change.
Call the party the “Reform Party” (will sound more palatable to the right).
Run on the promise that if they form government, they will enact PR, immediately call a new election. Not sure if they should disband as there are tons of other problems with our democracy than just PR.
You can’t give UBI to a subset of people. Then it’s not universal anymore.
But if you did give artists a basic income, how much art would they need to produce to qualify? What qualifies as art? The law doesn’t do well with those kinds of questions.
Better to implement true UBI. Give it to everyone, and afford more security to folks who want to focus on art.
Hi guys! Back in the day I bought a DJI Mavic (1st gen) for my travels, when they were not so absolutely obnoxious about sending ALL your flight logs back to the motherland. As the obnoxiousness increased, I ended up installing a CFW (Merlin, I think) on the drone, so I could fly unrestricted and with no logged-in account on the...
No idea if those are what you’re looking for, but perhaps you can get an idea of the practices those 3 companies do in general (one of them is DJI so would be good for comparison so least)
I’ve been working there a long time, there are valid complaints, but poor work culture isn’t one I’ve normally heard. Of course it depends a lot on the specific manager, so I won’t deny specific anecdotal experiences. But generally I’d say the work culture is quite healthy.
About one out of every five home loans at three big Canadian banks are now negatively amortizing, which happens when years get added to the payment term of the original loan because the monthly payments are no longer enough to cover anything but the interest.
In addition to comparing against cost of rentals, there’s also opportunity cost with investing. If someone has a mortgage averaging 3-6%, and invests at 5-10%… that’s a great strategy. Why wouldn’t you push the amortization as long as possible?
I live in Ontario and Quebec was undergoing a referendum to leave Canada when I was a kid. I asked my Dad if Canada would still be the second biggest country if Quebec left.
He was impressed by the insightful question, but in reality I thought Quebec was just the tiny town where my Grandma lived.
Protip, if you ask someone a question, and then follow that up with “Or am I insane?”. You’re heavily implying that they in fact are the ones who are insane.
Maybe you legitimately didn’t know that. In case you didn’t, now you know.
President Joe Biden said Friday that he is planning to request more money from Congress to develop another new coronavirus vaccine, as scientists track new waves and hospitalizations rise, though not like before
I think they might actually be partisan. After I took the Trump vaccine I felt significantly more right wing. Looking forward to this new Biden vaccine so I can get back to my normal political views.

Post viral syndromes are phenomena that have been well documented long before COVID. You can find any number of scientific papers on the matter if you only cared to look.
Another point is the perception of progress. We all enjoy a progress bar that gradually fills up to one that sits at 20% then jumps to 100. It reduces our anxiety.

I used to equate Sync with Reddit too, but now I have a different perspective.
Reddit is nothing but a glorified link aggregator. Sync was my preferred way of viewing said list of links. Now that I have the exact same experience on Lemmy I’ve realized that Sync wasn’t Reddit, it was link aggregation and where those links come from doesn’t really matter.
It’s kind of poetic because that’s the promise of Lemmy. It doesn’t matter where the links are hosted.
Says who? I’m just curious who decides what Lemmy’s philosophy is. Does that philosophy extend across all instances or only specific ones? Or is it baked into the source code somehow?
Personally I think ads are alright. But that’s just my philosophy.
