I agree, people around here seem more mature on the whole. In my last year of Reddit, not only was I getting tired of the comment reposting bots, the teenagers subreddit seemed to permeate throughout the rest of the site more.

Although the rss feed feature is broken so there’s been no posts for a few days, !bapcsalescanada is one I used to track PC part sales. It was mirroring from Reddit, but just one easily blocked user from anyone not interested. We don’t have enough people frequenting RedFlagDeals and if we rely on individuals posting deals it will be way too late. That community saved me from needing to check Reddit at all.

On the Lemmy and Kbin Magazine side of things, Threads won’t be a huge threat as most discussion will stay on existing communities/magazines, and most of the same users will be there with some interaction from Threads users.
On the Mastodon and the microblog side of things Threads will be interesting and I think the healthiest option is some server disconnect from Threads and others don’t. What you don’t want is ALL the discussion happening on threads and within threads, Threads should be set up as a gateway to the rest of the Fediverse despite the size difference.

Yeah, I’d say it happens fairly often (~15% of the time). I try to stop myself from being too snarky at people when it’s not warranted. I try to save that for internet assholes, not confused people or people making a small mistake.
Another instance is if I’m 2 replies into a back and forth convo with an individual, I might write a 3rd reply but often just cancel it, because most times by that point the discussion isn’t worth me continuing.
PS you will find I often edit replies right after publishing to fix stuff, add stuff to fully answer the question, or change my tone if it sounds too aggressive. Sorry about that.

If I were in your shoes, I’d try to meet up with all of them together in some place over the holidays to try to talk it out.
You can be upfront and honest about what you like and don’t like about the person in question’s behaviour, but think ahead of time on how you characterize it so that it’s not offensive to them. (Tip: focus on the fact it’s the behaviour that’s putting you off, not the person)
If they’re receptive they’re worth keeping around, but if they continue to be belligerent then have a discussion with the rest of the group that this friend is changing the group in a way you’re not comfortable with and figure out a solution from there.
I mean, if you’ve already done what you think is an honest effort to discuss it directly with this person, then talking about it with the rest of the group when this guy runs away is not “behind the guy’s back”. It’s just refusing to participate in that conversation, which they have every right to, but can’t come back and complain about missing out on that discussion.
I figure if you were to give it another go, the best place would be in a casual, low-stress and low-stakes setting, over bubble tea, coffee, pizza, dinner, boardgames, video games, a bar, a park, or whatever is comfortable with your group.
