Lemmy Ansible 1.3.0 (Lemmy v0.19.0) update dramatically reduced performance of instance

I made the huge mistake of upgrading on the same day of the new release. I had copied my inventory folder to a new pull of lemmy-ansible, checked out 1.3.0, and ran it with no errors. But refreshing the took a very long time to load. The closest issue I found was at github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4244 but that’s a deep dive...

Unless you backed up you database right before the upgrade, I don’t think you can downgrade as the database schema has been migrated while upgrading to Lemmy 0.19.0.

The downtime mentioned in the README is the database migration, which can take quite some time on some instances (it took 5-10 minutes on mine).

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

doesn’t have any changes which would cause performance impact

There’s Lemmy 0.19.0’s persistent federation queue which brings a much higher database load, this could be why OP reports reduced performance.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

By any chance, have you set database.pool_size in lemmy.hjson? You could try increasing the number to see if it improves performance

Obvious question but is your phone on an IP v6 network?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Because if OP was trying to access an IP v6 address from an IPv4 network that wouldn’t work. It wasn’t obvious to me where the issue lies.

MostlyJustBored’s account is 3 weeks old with no history. We should take whatever they say with a grain of salt.

Most JS shipping on the web is minified, with variables renamed to random names, you can’t just open it and search for maliciousFunction.

Also their claim of Twitch doing network sniffing in a browser should be impossible unless Twitch has found and is actively exploiting a security flaw in modern web browsers.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

I second that. I want to add that you might miss new posts and comments while your instance reboots, you want to keep reboots to a minimum.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Well, I honestly don’t know, maybe you’re right

Firefox on Android won't keep my "desktop site" toggle on (kbin.social)

From what I've read online this shouldn't even be an issue anymore since "desktop site" is meant to have been made default recently (edit: I was wrong this is not the case, see comments), but either way it isn't for me, and I'm getting really annoyed at having to re-toggle every tab to desktop every time I open the app. I can't...

since “desktop site” is meant to have been made default recently

I don’t remember reading this, do you have any source to share?

Each Lemmy instance keeps a copy of posts and contents made in communities followed by its users, so even though an instance is decommissioned, the content lives on on other instance.

For example my instance was off for a month (I was moving out, setting up my NAS was my last priority) and during this time my posts and comments were still available on other instances.

As for users unable to login on decommissioned instances, unfortunately all they can do is create an account on another instance.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Instances copy images locally to avoid overloading remote instances. For instance I have 16GB of pictures and videos stored even though I only posted a few pictures.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Unfortunately no: only new posts are federated.

The only exception is when an instance federates with a community for the first time, the instance will fetch the last few posts from this community. But in your example, since lemmy.film no longer exist, no instance will ever be able to fetch last posts from [email protected].

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Baring technical issues, deletions and moderation are federated. The only thing that isn’t is media removal, but there are tools to automate the process github.com/db0/fedi-safety

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

I’m sorry, I don’t understand your question.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

They are stored until the instance admin(s) choose to purge the community. Then all posts from the community will be purged from the instance.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

What error message do you have (if any) when you try to mount your folder (sudo mount /home/pi/mount/NAS)

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Weird. Have you tried removing 0 0 at the end of your fstab entry? This option is not supported on recent NFS versions

Why would AI end capitalism? If previous centuries told us anything, it is that in a capitalist world more productivity doesn’t equate to more leasure time or better wages.

I wish I’m wrong, but I can’t see any other issue than companies using AI to increase profits.

I’m confused, isn’t the non-pro getting the new main sensor introduced in the 7 Pro?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

As far as I’m aware, Lemmy does not have a way to add weights to communities visibility (ie. making some communities more visible by giving them a higher weight and vice-versa)

Maybe change your sorting to Hot or Active?

Ahem killedbygoogle.com

Edit: my tone was tongue in cheek, I hope Google will keep its promise, but you know, they did us a Stadia after all.

Now I would really like for Google to retroactively upgrade the Pixel 6 and 7 update support to match the Pixel 8.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Well, they did not partner with iFixit out of good faith: France’s repairability score (which might serve as a template for a EU-wide version) incentivize OEMs to provide repair instructions and parts as it gets them a better score.

I see that Google is following the trend of limiting certain software features to the Pro model: Pro controls, Video Boost, Night Sight Video and multi-shot RAW. I hope Pro controls will eventually come to older models, either officially or with a modded APK.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you, hell will freeze before Google does that.

It’s a tool that makes a survey of Steam games ownership and play times based on public information on Steam Community. It’s useful to game developers and journalists as it allows them to know what is popular.

Oh and Steam Spy has been developed and released before he joined Epic Games.

I logged in Reddit in order to check, there’s an option to show communities you are most active in (and that’s enabled by default and not available on old.reddit.com) but that’s not what OP asked for, as I guess it lists communities I comment and posts the most, right?

Smart Lock has disappeared from my Pixel - anyone else?

I noticed today I was having to use fingerprint unlock every time I wanted to access my 6a, even though normally I use Smart Lock to keep my phone unlocked when it’s near my Bluetooth watch. I just checked through the settings and Smart Lock has disappeared, as has on-body detection. Has this happened to anybody else?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Yep, disappeared for me yesterday and multiple people on Reddit (first link when you search for the issue) report the same. No idea if it will ever come back or if it’s going to be replaced by the fancy Wear OS pairing (which won’t work with any other Bluetooth device as far as I know)

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

The issue has been fixed, all you have to do is to update Google Play Services

Google has addressed this issue with most users not needing to do anything. The Trusted devices menu once again appears with previous pairings restored. If it’s not yet back, check if there are any updates to Google Play services by tapping this link on your phone.

I actually never switched from Firefox since the early 2000s.

Chrome’s UI never clicked with me and even at its release it was already public knowledge that every entry in the URL bar was sent to Google and I wasn’t confortable with that.

Spider-Man 2's Ray Tracing Feature Always On (www.techpowerup.com)

Developers at Insomniac Games have confirmed that Spider-Man 2's ray tracing feature will be running as standard/by default within the PlayStation 5 version—a player's adjustments of graphical performance settings will have no bearing on this being turned on or off. Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac's director of core technology,...

Somehow I was convinced that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was Insomniac’s first always-on ray-tracing game and that non-raytraced graphics had been added to the PC port but I was completely wrong.

What should I do with my old iPhone XR?

I just upgraded to a 13, but the trade-in was only $80 and I thought I might find something better to do with it than just get $80 back, so I’d love suggestions. Remember, it doesn’t have cellular access anymore, just wifi. Does anyone have any good ideas for what to do with it? A friend suggested a dedicated GPS for my car,...

I haven’t played much of the Beta yet so I don’t have any opinion on your feedback, but just keep in mind that this Beta is based on an April 2023 build and that its main objective is to stress-test their infrastructure, so there’s a chance that some of your complaints may have been tweaked by now ign.com/…/payday-3-open-beta-release-date-confirm…

I’ll personally play the game on Game Pass to get a complete impression before commiting any money and time on it.

Looks like the fix to add visual effects support in Google Meet for Firefox is now being rolled out

I got the fix yesterday and I was surprised to see Meet suggesting visual effects. But on my computer enabling them makes the video stream’s framerate choppy :/
