I would 100% patronize a restaurant that had full transparency and decent no-frills food. They publicly post all their expenses and how much profit they make. Charge a table/dine-out fee, then actual cost of food and prep on top. Pay their workers in full, so no tipping required. Explain things like dining hours that help the business keep down costs.
I played math games with my grandkids for pocket change. Get it right, I give them a dime. Get it wrong, they give me a dime. It’s cost me at least $100, but they can now accurately do basic math in their heads almost instantly. My grandson went from failing math to excelling in the subject. He can do math faster than using a calculator.
We use an electronic timer. Started with adding single digit numbers. He needs to provide answers before the timer goes off. Right answer adds a dime, but wrong answers or no answer before time expires subtracts a dime. Identified the numbers he had trouble with. We play until he’s taken a couple dollars from me. I always let him win a couple dollars to keep up the interest. Lowered the time until it was down to a second.
Most math is learning and applying a technique. But there is no technique or formula for adding/multiplying single digit numbers - it’s all memory. That’s what I did with my grandkids, and it frees them to learn the techniques without struggling with the basics.

Ideally she wants to be laid off. But if that doesn’t happen she wants to retire. I’ve been trying to convince her that retiring means no severance and no unemployment, so getting fired without cause is her next best option.
Thank you all for the suggestions! One that I mentioned to her is to ask her doctor if her recent health issues could be related to the fact she gets stressed dealing with corporate customers, who can be very demanding. It’s an increasing proportion of her job that is not part of her original job description (actually the reason she wants to quit). Let it slip in the employee chat system that she’s seeing a doctor about workplace stress induced illness. Management will see it as a prelude to a workplace disability claim and want her out.
She’s already been trying this. Takes her time looking up solutions, and then defends her long call times by saying she’s being thorough. The layoffs should be any time now, so we’ll see if that worked soon enough.
I don’t see how asking for and not receiving a raise puts any more pressure on the company to surplus her. I agree with her that it would signal that she will quit if they don’t pay her more.
It’s all moot at this point, because it looks like she’s going to get disability for job stress related illness. At least that’s what she’s told me her doctor said.

Not really a game, but playing Minecraft has made me wish for real-world modeling software with a similar first person interface. Select from standard off-the-shelf components, use real-world tools, and craft stuff. Then test it out. I’ve got ideas in my head for all kinds of stuff, but going from there to an actual model is tedious with standard CAD and modeling software. Why can’t I (virtually) take an 8’ Douglas Fir 2x4, cut it with a saw, drill some holes in it - you get the idea. I could make something like a shed, then stress test it in a windstorm, pile 4 feet of snow on it, or drench it with rain. Or build a go-kart and see how it would perform. Tweak the design until it does what you want. Make the app user moldable and let the community go wild adding capabilities and virtual materials. Maybe it could eventually generate real parts lists, fabrication data for 3D printers and CNC machines, and assembly drawings.
Two “gadgets” that I’m never without. My Leatherman multitool and my RovyVon Aurora flashlight. The multitool with locking blades is like carrying a toolbox on your hip. And that flashlight - it’s 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, but it can kick out a beam that lights up things 1000 feet away. Or provide enough light to read by for 40 hours. Yeah, I can use the smartphone’s flash, but it isn’t bright enough to show me if the two eyes reflecting back at me belong to a dog or a bear. That’s important where I live.
I use the knife a lot, mostly for opening the bag of pellets for the pellet stove and opening Amazon boxes. Yesterday I was using my chainsaw about 1/8 mile from the house. The chain slipped off the drive sprocket. Out came the Leatherman and the pliers pulled the chain back into place. Saved me at least 10 minutes not driving back to the house for the tools.
Last week a little kid had a birthday party at the park. He got a remote control car, but nobody in his party had a screwdriver to open the battery compartment. I was at a nearby table and heard his predicament. Leatherman to the rescue!
A few years ago I stepped on a nail while hiking. It went through the sole of my shoe and into my foot, pinning it inside. The Leatherman let me pull out the nail so I could remove the shoe and tend to the wound. It would have really sucked hobbling 4 miles with a nail in my foot!
My buddy also wears a Leatherman. Before cell phones became common, he was walking alone on a steep hillside when he slipped and tumbled over a retaining wall that was under construction. He ended up suspended from the wall by a spike of rebar through his arm. He used the metal saw to cut the rebar. He credits the tool with saving his life, because who knows how long it would have been before someone else came along.
So which city are we going to tear down and rebuild first? And we have to come up with some new laws, like you can only own a home that’s within walking/biking distance of your work.
We had a taste of a viable alternative, thanks to the pandemic. Remote work - it accomplishes most of what you propose without totally ditching private transportation. Maybe we should make that a law - business has to show that physical presence is required or they must allow employees to work remotely.

All I can suggest is to read many sources. Keep a mental tally sheet. See which sources correct themselves when they are proven wrong. Note how often they present provably false information. Try to look up the original source material (some will misquote or distort to advance their agenda). Look for widespread corroboration from other sources. After a while you’ll know how each spins their information, how well they vet their material, and their overall journalistic integrity. That will allow you to rank credibility.
Misinformation often has only one source, and that source will usually have a history of misinformation or extreme bias.

These have most of the A/C “guts” in a box that sits outside and a couple of hoses that hook up to the heat exchanger inside. The outside box chills water, pumping it through the inside heat exchanger. They’re more efficient than window A/C units, and get around rental agreements prohibiting window units.
What seems to be impossible is to locate businesses, their employees, and stores geographically close together. I have lots of friends who drive over an hour each way for work. I used to drive 30 minutes to my job. Now my wife and i work from home and for the first time in my life we have only one car. But there’s no way we could go without a car. Family lives 120 miles away. Groceries are 10 miles, and other necessities are 26 miles. The US was laid out to require personal vehicles. It’s too spread out to have a functioning mass transit system that’s convenient to use.
Using the such a system in the US, even if convenient, has risks. During the peak of COVID, many riders refused to wear masks. There’s no security, no hygiene or conduct standards for riders (try to sit next to a crazy homeless person or someone higher than a kite for 45 minutes), and when you try to get help from law enforcement, nobody shows up.

Not only Kentucky. I live in a rural California town of around 2000 people. There are no sidewalks except for the 1/4 mile in front of the elementary school, and that wasn’t built until a kid was hit by a car 6 years ago. Last year a 4th grader was killed by a drunk driver walking home from school on the main road through town - which has no sidewalk. Most of us drive our kids to and from school now, particularly since an attempted abduction happened earlier this year. Bus service is available, but costs $185 a year per child and requires being at the stop an hour before school starts. My daughter won’t let her kids walk the 1/4 mile to the bus stop unattended. Not in these times. I think the bus may become even more unpopular since the special ed driver was arrested last week for molesting kids.

Just because it’s unconstitutional doesn’t stop the government from doing whatever it wants to its citizens if someone thinks they can justify/get away with it. Government entities have a long history of doing what they want regardless of what the Constitution says. Sherman’s March to the Sea, the interment of Japanese Americans, nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific Ocean, the Tuskegee Experiment, the MOVE bombing in Philadelphia, etc… The Constitution is just pieces of paper. Its power comes from those willing - and able - to enforce it.
