Iceblade02,

Oh man, I can second HealthyGamerGG. Decent tips and aside from that also a pleasant fellow all around (at least that’s how he comes off in his vids)

Iceblade02,

The obvious answer there would be that you get wiped out if you’re too loud, hence the only surviving civilizations are the quiet ones. We wouldn’t’ve been met by a friendly transmission politely informing us, but rather whatever the cause for this silence is - some force so overwhelming that it possibly inadvertently wipes out nascent species.

Say, for instance self-replicating artificial space probes designed to seek out “new life and civilizations” gone wrong. So, deep space is full of these things and if a star draws their attention, all of them within transmission distance make a beeline - say hi and then proceeds to “salvage” any usable matter in the star system to replicate themselves and spread out again, thereby also dooming whatever life attracted them in the first place.

Iceblade02,

Yeah, only the “enlightenment” comes at the price of getting your hands chopped of if you produce insufficient precious materials. No thanks.

Iceblade02,

I suppose it depends a lot on the nature of said time-stopping power. Using it to threaten some of the most powerful people on the planet into using said power to do good (or at least not bad) would be on the list of stuff to do.

For instance - a note threatening Putin with the loss of a toe or something (and further escalating consequences) unless he makes a public statement announcing the intent of Russian Armed forces to withdraw from Ukraine.

Iceblade02,

Obviously I don’t have the entire picture, and as such can only speculate.

If I were to do that, I’d say that your mother has conflicting thoughts and feelings. On the one hand she cares for you, wants to be supportive and knows that this is your own decision - on the other, she dislikes and has a hard time accepting it. For the sake of the former, she tries to put her opinions behind her, but sometimes fails to do so (perhaps tied to mood?).

I have a similar situation with my mom, but instead regarding choice of career. It feels hurtful, and might never go away entirely. How you deal with that is up to you.

Iceblade02,

Is there really an “indigenous” people to the palestine area like there are in others? The area has been conquered, reconquered, genocided and force converted a great many times in the past 3k years.

Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Egyptians, Arab Mamlukes, Byzantine Crusaders, (Mongols), Arab Caliphates, Ottomans, Brits and lastly Arabs and Israelites.

Iceblade02,

The cheaper version - an fm radio transmitter that connects to your phone via bluetooth.

Costs 20$ and takes zero installation.

Iceblade02,

The thing is that this isn’t just about Tesla and their employees/contractors - our entire labour market is built on collective negotiations between workers and the employers. If a single big corp gets away with preventing unionization amongst its employees, it may very well upend the entire thing. Hence why other unions act in solidarity and other companies don’t even try to support tesla - as doing so could very well lead to the strike spreading and becoming a general strike.

Iceblade02,

Would it be less of a dick move if it was a faster cyclist or a motorcyclist needing to pass by? No, it might actually be worse.

The point is that we need to do our best to respect other road users, regardless of their method of transportation. Pedestrians, cyclist, motorcyclists, cars, lorries and even animals (perhaps especially animals)

Any side-by-side vehicles increases the amount of space taken on the road, which means it should be avoided when other travellers need to pass by. It’s the same reason that lorries or cars travelling side-by-side at the same speed on the highway is often frowned upon.

I really don’t get people who want to wage a constant social war over our shared infrastructure by being assholes to each other. Being decent and considerate is safer and more pleasant for everybody involved.

Iceblade02,

A significant portion of “10 cars per hour” roads look like this:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/3d15b388-ef34-4fa2-8af7-6f5b82f03fc8.jpeg

Attempting to pass by a pair of cyclists abreast is likely not possible to do in a safe manner on such a road.

Iceblade02,

The speed limit on that road is 70km/h. I commuted to work on it last summer. I suppose it looks a bit slimmer than it actually is. It’s perfectly possible (and legal) to pass a bike safely, or even meet cars. The latter is a tight fit and you’d of course reduce your speed appropriately.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b8775a98-0171-4fba-9e1f-552c7aea0445.jpeg

Iceblade02,

The answer is simple really. The car is one unit, the bikes (in this scenario) are two units, they don’t have to be considerate, but they have the option to do so.

I’ll give an equivalent example. Where I live we have a class of vehicles referred to as “moped cars”, same form factor as cars, but speed restricted to either 30 or 45 km/h. Usually they’re used by teens to get arouns in rural areas with poor public transit options, so they’ll often be trundling along on 70-90km/h roads at slow speed.

This can quickly lead to queues building up behind them during high traffic hours in areas with few passing opportunities. Quite often, when this happens, they’ll pull off to the side for a few seconds at an opportune spot to let other, faster vehicles, pass by. They don’t have to do this, but it is considerate.

As for the second half of your comment, each method of transportation has its niche and purpose. The best system is one that utilizes the strengths of each to complement the others. Attempting to apply a monolithic solution everywhere will generally lead to frustrations and inefficiencies.

Pedestrian - Trivial distances, any density.

Bike - Trivial -> Short distances, any density.

Cars - Short -> Long distances, low density.

Busses - Short -> Long distances, medium density.

Rail - Short -> Long distances, high density.

High Speed Rail - Medium -> Extreme distances, high density.

Air - Long -> Extreme distances, high density.

Iceblade02,

Tracked vehicles tend to have priority against all other methods of transport on land. They’re just as incompatible with pedestrians and bikes as with busses, lorries and cars.

Iceblade02,

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Iceblade02,

I was going for a simple reply, that neither atrocity makes the other right, something which cuts both ways since historic times in this matter - but that statemrnt of yours, that’s off the deep end.

Frankly, the very notion of someone who “feels so good” killing babies, it disgusts me.

Iceblade02,

I admire your optimism, I really do. When imagining a reality where Israel opens its borders to Gaza, what I see is Israel descended into a warzone - hundreds of thousands of dead Israelis, slaughtered in schools, homes, streets and hospitals in the name of muslim holy war, jewish genocide and the mantra of Palestine “from the river to the sea”.

It’s an entirely different situation in the West Bank, which some might consider odd, given that Gaza has essentially been a sovereign state, whilst the W.B has been under tight Israeli control. The W.B Palestinians have amongst the highest living standards in the entire Middle East, with schools, universities, internet and TVs. Indeed, it is quite possible that the situation in Gaza would’ve been far better had Israel not withdrawn in '05, but it is hard to make predictions about alternate timelines.

I think it has been very clear what Israel wants from peace, in fact they’ve already made it once, with Egypt. In exchange for recognition, the promise of peace and a few other concessions, they ceded an area of land larger than modern-day Israel.

That is the key point that palestinian leadership has never been willing to offer in negotiation - recognition of Israel (as rightful owner of its territories) and the promise of peace (officially renouncing any claims over those same territories).

Iceblade02, (edited )

You leave out that in the same statement, Hamas denied the statehood of Israel, indicating that they wanted Israel to make huge one-sided concessions, without making any concessions of their own.

Iceblade02,

This is usually more an issue of awful website design than anything else. 90% of issues I face in the FF app can be resolved by viewing the desktop site instead.

Iceblade02,

Not a fan of defederations in general, but I can totally see why. Lemmygrad will not be missed.

Iceblade02,

I’d wager that just accounting for emissions in the production of said electric vehicle will make it entirely unable to compete with container ships. Boats are crazy efficient.

Iceblade02,

Most steel is (unfortunately) made in Chinese blast furnaces using coal coke and powered with electricity from coal power plants.

Iceblade02,

Some producers use electric arc furnaces, a few of which use only scrap metal as input, which means they need far less coal and emit far less CO2 than a conventional BOF/BFF setup.

Iceblade02,

Is the intent to starve civilians or to deprive hamas combatants of any and all supplies?

Iceblade02,

Israel doesn’t claim Gaza though

Iceblade02,

Yep, I’d imagine most times when there have been air strikes, incursions, raids etc. Where they’ve destroyed weapons or captured/killed some terrorist leader could have thwarted similar events.

Iceblade02, (edited )

You do realize that Israel withdrew completely from Gaza territory in 2005, right? They haven’t occupied any land in the area for almost 20 years.

Iceblade02,

It’s the sort of thing that happens if you keep attacking your neighbors. Hells, not even Egypt wants anything to do with the Hamas gov:t in Gaza. That’s how bad it is.

Iceblade02,
Iceblade02,

Oh most certainly. Palestine as a whole isn’t a functional state, just the Gaza Strip (albeit under varying degrees of blockade since Hamas was elected and won the civil war). I’d consider the W.B to be occupied/undergoing a slow process of annexation. I think the most realistic solution for the citizens of the W.B is that they at some point in the future get the option to become Israeli citizens with all the rights (and responsibilities) that entails.

Iceblade02,

Regardless of what we feel is justified or not, that is what war is - hell for everybody involved. Let’s just hope that this doesn’t get drawn out.

Iceblade02,

Regardless of what we feel is intended or not, that is what war is - hell for everybody involved. Let’s just hope that this doesn’t get drawn out.

Iceblade02,

I pay no tax to the US, but I bitch about it. I’ve lived abroad since I was 3y.o and realized when I turned 18 that I have to declare to the IRS every year. Let me tell you, it is an absolute pain in the ass when you have to do it yourself, without a US bank account or phone number. Takes me a full working day to declare 0 tax to the IRS when they already know that I owe zero tax because they force any bank I have accounts at to report to them. Half the banks in Sweden simply refuse to have me as a customer because of this, in addition to certain types of income technically being subject to double taxation because of US law.

I can’t even get rid of my US citizenship without paying an absurd exit tax

Iceblade02,

…or I don’t have a 5yr record of reporting taxes to the IRS. There’s also the 2’500USD “Administration fee”

Iceblade02,

In Sweden passing on the right is only permitted in two main scenarios.

Rate of speed lower than 70kph, or the lanes go to different destinations.

Iceblade02,

As a MoS&E student in northern Europe I’d love to hear why these companies have such a bad rep over in India. They’re doing massive recruitment drives at my uni (along with BCG) and sponsor a lot of student events, so I don’t hear many bad things about them.

Iceblade02,

Ah, makes sense then why they’re pushing so hard to have a presence at our universities. Hopefully I’ll be able to avoid such employers in the future. Thanks for the heads up!

Iceblade02,

Scotland is only borderline social democratic welfare state.

Iceblade02,

That doesn’t seem like a job fair for women, but rather a job fair for everybody except men…

Iceblade02,

If I’m dreaming, there’s always a rope hanging by my right shoulder. Just reach up and pull it to wake up.

Swedish author, Musk-hater and Tesla lover took his first dose of the orange pill (lemmy.world)

Lars Wilderäng is a Swedish author and blogger. Quick overview: his topics generally revolve around defence policies (Russia bad, moar defence), economics (low interest rates bad, housing market speculation bad) and since the war started, the war in Ukraine (send Ukraine moar weapons). He hates Elon Musk but loves his Tesla. He...

Iceblade02,

One reason I never even thought of until recently is that some people have difficulties seating themselves in a low vehicle. Most notably elders (arthritis) and obese people.

Still not a fan of the SUV invasion, but at least it makes a little more sense.

Iceblade02,

Not OP but in my country there have been pushes to label criticism of Islam as hate speech against muslims. Partucularly troublesome given how Islamic views of women and LGBT individuals have become more prevalent.

Iceblade02,

Of course you can. It’s the moment that desire to harm turns into intent to harm that it becomes actionable.

Though “polite discourse” in this case might be considered a crowd of demontrators boooing whomever is expressing their wishes to do harm until they get a headache :D

Looking for games with strong female leads for my daughter (even just to watch as I play). Came across this link, but they're a bit age-inappropriate. Any suggestions from the community? (gameranx.com)

Edit: Daughter is only 5 so she’s unlikely to play much but she watches me and as long as it’s not too violent, it should be fine

Iceblade02,

Old but gold, the Longest Journey, since you seem to want something story centered.

Iceblade02,

The worst part is that you can get targeted by advertisements recorded by the other partys phone. Once upon a time, before I started blocking spotify ads, the ads I got were always very generic (fast food, spotify premium, espresso house etc.), but one time after visiting my cousin and mentioning that I had a headache, I was bombarded with only ads for pain killers for the full three hour drive home the day after.

Creepy AF.

Iceblade02,

Freedom and personal liberty drives innovation more than anything else.

Iceblade02,

Hold on, let me just hang a curtain in front of the secondary screen.

There, so much better :)

Iceblade02,

Okay, then elaborate please, what’s the situation like?

I’m just transposing what I know from Swedish politics, given that Germany also has municipal counties with a certain degree of input. In Sweden, the 2018-2022 government tried (and failed, due to legal problems) to overrule municipal councils where the Sweden Democrats were influencing their governing coalitions to refuse to receive asylum seekers, in some cases even paying other municipalities to receive them instead.

Hence that voting districts with high SD voter counts now have fewer migramts than other parts of the country.

Iceblade02,

Insightful, thank you!
