You’ve basically got it. To use the “Google XMPP” example some others have:

XMPP users existed, and its userbase was growing (similar to Lemmy). Google made Google Talk, a desktop chat application they used to have, compatible with XMPP (which was the “ActivityPub” of chat applications) (embrace).

After a bit, Google started adding their own proprietary stuff to XMPP. (It’s similar to how Apple/ Google added proprietary stuff in their respective text message applications, like reacting to a text with an emote.) The XMPP devs, for whatever reason, couldn’t or didn’t make Google’s own proprietary Google Talk features compatible with XMPP, so XMPP users might’ve started feeling left out (extend).

After a while, Google Talk got rid of its XMPP support, and, as a result, many XMPP users could no longer communicate with many of the friends they had made on the platform. (Since Google Talk users outnumbered XMPP users, there was a very high chance that people you communicated with on there were using Google Talk.) Google Talk users, on the other hand, simply noticed maybe one or two people on their list had gone offline permanently (extinguish).

I actually don’t have a problem tying everything together. I think the fact that Mastodon and Lemmy can communicate with each other (even though it’s not really intentionally designed that way) is pretty neat.

What I do have a problem with is the corporations that are trying to do it. I don’t trust any corporation to do it responsibly, especially not Facebook.

Also, come to think of it, what’s keeping companies from “vacuuming” everyone’s data without actually having a public instance that has users interacting with posts on other instances? Example: Instance A exists. What’s stopping a company that runs Instance B, which doesn’t have any active users on it, from taking all the available data from Instance A? Genuine question, by the way. I haven’t exactly kept up with the technical workings of Lemmy very well.

Lemmy just launched it in v0.19 yesterday, so you’ll have to wait for the people running your instance (in your case, the Beehaw mods) to update it. Looks like Beehaw is still running v0.18.4.

Not always true. Sometimes, it’s a driver issue. (Usually, a reinstall can fix the issue.) Or it could, very rarely, even be a BIOS/ UEFI issue. (Don’t touch it unless you know what you’re doing, and only download updates from your manufacturer’s website.)

In any case, typically, the ones that aren’t occupied are always slightly ajar, so there’s no need for an “occupied” indicator.

It probably won’t always work, but pressing 0 is usually a “hidden” option that’ll connect you to a human. It used to be used to connect people to an operator, and many companies still use it that way, even if they don’t advertise it.

Considering they’re all run by different companies, I’d disagree with you there.

They all use the same open-source codebase, but they all have their own proprietary features added on top by different companies.

To be clear, I do agree that Google is basically controlling the market through their open-source code, but I disagree that they can all be called a single web browser.

I just set my default browser and install MSEdgeRedirect. It’s like EdgeDeflector, except it’s not been abandoned. Its latest version even “grounds CoPilot”, as the dev so nicely put it.

Shorts are basically YouTube videos forced into a custom UI. There are still ways to force Shorts to load in the default UI.

I ended up “under-doing” it, got the flu as a result, and ended up having three zero days in a row followed by three bare minimum days.

I remember when I had a weak strain of COVID (barely any symptoms except for achiness all over, slight stuffiness, brain fog, and trouble getting enough oxygen). Even without doing anything, I was tired enough at the end of the day to sleep about 9-10 hours straight.

I wouldn’t want to have a stronger strain, and I hope you get better soon.

Basically any show on PBS Kids. I used to watch back when Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired regularly on it. Other shows I watched included Zoboomafoo (with the Kratt brothers!), Clifford, Arthur (was sad when I heard it’d aired its final new episode recently), Cyberchase, and Clifford’s Puppy Days. My parents didn’t have cable until I was a teenager, so I was pretty much raised on nothing but PBS Kids (as far as TV shows I could watch).

Another show I used to watch when I was really young, though, was Disney’s House of Mouse on ABC Saturday Mornings. I was devastated when they stopped airing it. We didn’t have a TV guide or anything, so, when it simply didn’t come on one morning, it caught me by complete surprise. On a less sad note, I think I actually still have Snowed In at the House of Mouse on VHS.

Or just use uBlock Origin? It blocks YouTube’s ads (and their adblocker-blockers) right out of the gate. It’s also available on Firefox for Android.

Same here. I tried loading the same 13-second video on Piped and YouTube. YouTube played it instantly. Piped took several seconds (probably longer than the video lasted) to start playing.

Have you followed the instructions in the devs’ Reddit thread? (At the bottom of the thread, they also have a section of instructions for people who’ve already gone through the process of purging their filters before.)

Also, make sure nothing else (ex. another adblocker, including your browser’s built-in adblocker) is causing issues.
