4am,

The mistake was allowing the internet to become “the cloud” in the first place.

People should be able to host their own shit on their own machine at home. This should be simple for people to set up, like a NAS with an App Store. Default to a secure config. Don’t make it too easy; if you try to sugarcoat it all, people won’t realize what they’re getting into (like now with cloud shit)

Otherwise we get what we have now - everything from TVs to social media to fucking door locks and lightbulbs needs a connection back to the manufacturer, and they can drop support at any time. This allows the worst of rent-seeking under the guise of “everyone too dumb to do on their own”, very similar to “we must not allow security because bad guys could hurt KIDS” (while true, it’s just an excuse to read everyone’s mail to protect the ruling class from any negative opinion brewing)

4am,

I’d rather the storage and retrieval is just kind of built in to the network itself (p2p) and companies like Google can just do search on it.

Make your money on ads, but keep it off my content if I don’t want to use your services. No need to vertically integrate so hard.

4am,

He didn’t want to buy it, remember? A court forced him after he set wheels in motion as “le epic trolololo” and now that he was forced to buy it, he and his authoritarian backers figure they might as well tank it in order to combat the “woke mind virus” aka people waking up to the feudal lords of late-stage capitalism keeping the scales tipped in their favor eternally.

4am,

It can be more complicated than “bigger number better”. I don’t think anyone’s trying to justify it, probably just speculate on why it is the way it is

Maybe Apple discovered that most software’s bottleneck isn’t at the RAM access for user land operations but is with cache misses, and they sacrificed some of the circuitry supporting memory access speed for additional on-die memory? So while you have less RAM bus speed, it doesn’t actually matter because you never could’ve used it anyway?

I don’t know any real world numbers of any of this, I’m spitballin’ here - but that’s an example of an optimization that could plausibly happen when you are working with hardware design.

People have been talking shit about Apple since the early 90s, but their stuff still works and they’re still selling it so, miss me with that “no no THIS time they’re playing us all for fools! No, seriously, guys! Guys? STOP HAVING FUN!” nonsense.

I’ll believe it when the benchmarks come out.

4am,

I’m so glad this is happening

4am,

I think the part that is missing is “imagine if I were a billion dollar company and I…”

4am,

This comment needs to become a copypasta. Not because it’s silly, but because it’s accurate and brutal.

4am,

Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory all pushed into the cloud, Office 365 the only upgrade path, Teams the only collab software in their ecosystem.

Linux winning the server market was the worst thing to happen to normie workstations in a generation at heavily MS shops, that cost is trickling down.

(To be clear, I’m not against Linux, but all the pointy-hairs who need to have a Microsoft shop are going to be feeling the cost)

4am,

Yeah Lemmy is undergoing a complete rewrite right now so some stuff that was once there might not be for the time being, but my understanding is that it will all slowly back and once it is back to the point it once was at, it’ll be much easier to create new features and it will also be much more stable.

4am,

I don’t think the Wii U’s issue was that a controller was a screen; I think the Wii U’s issue was that everyone thought it was an add-on for the Wii and wondered why it cost more than the Wii itself did

4am,

That’s still a cosmetic block and the script will eventually cut you off from the servers is what I think they more saying - as in, the servers will just refuse to send you the video.

4am,

Four is binding, and it seems they’ve dropped into a false-set.

4am,

About 3.5% of the effects of climate change in 2022. So, yes.

4am,

Good lord what is this moon magic man I must template

4am,

To be clear: “the War on Christmas” is manufactured to rile up Christians’ persecution complex so they Christmas even harder in response, which means more sales for gifts, decorations, food items, fucking Christian Pride merch or some shit, more angry donations to Jesus-posturing politicians who wage class warfare against these same people.

It’s capitalism: you’re always being sold

4am,

False equivalence. If we had been working towards this goal since the 70s then more focus, both financial and science/engineering, would have been put into it and progress we’re making now might have happened 20 or 30 years ago.

Oil companies did everything they could to stop it, instead of positioning themselves as research leaders they went for short term profits. After all, they swam in pools of money for the rest of their lives and we’ll all be here when all the crops die and the mountains become the shores.

So anyway, that’s why I love communism now.

4am,

Use the Referer header to check what domain the browser is loading from. You can also check the connection origin IP to see if it’s a site you know to be scraping you (i.e. not hotlinking but caching). Could possibly also check the User-Agent header to detect scrapers, depending on if they bother to forge it or not.

4am,

Congrats, you’re one of today’s lucky 10,000

4am,

Cannibalizing cannibalism? No one wants to work anymore!

4am,

We will see another big one when old.Reddit.com dies, too. Some people just want a list, man! I don’t necessarily want to load every post and picture to scroll by…

Are comments from other platforms supposed to appear beneath blog posts like that? I suppose it depends on how WordPress has implemented their federation. If it is supposed to work, it might also depend on how often WordPress pulls in information from other sources; I wonder what their default federation settings are? Does a blog automatically federate everywhere? Or would they have a more allow-list model to prevent comment sections becoming a moderation nightmare for blog authors?

I suppose I should look this up 😇

EDIT: “and, in turn, receive replies from those platforms that are transformed into blog comments.”

So it might be a matter of how often that blog’s “cron” tasks run (background processing that runs on a timer), and perhaps if the blog author allows comments (from the fediverse and otherwise) and if they have to manually approve them before they display.

4am,

Considering what we know (and can assume, extrapolated from that) about the United States intelligence capabilities (hi NSA analyst!), it’s all the more important for the President to avoid shit like making unverified claims (or at least being upfront about it if they are)

I don’t think any of the last 5 Presidents would have handled this any differently though; which is a fucking shame.

Then again, the state department and up needs to be ultra-Zionist or else, they dug themselves into that hole a long time ago, to the point where they can’t call out obvious genocide just because it’s being done by a close ally.

Just sucks for the civilians who were at this point mostly born into this conflict, indoctrinated by their side, and will be killed for it who probably just wanted to live their lives.

4am,

Downvoting the arch meme? Are the Linux people grumpy today?

4am,

The video shows a reflection in the back window of the SUV showing his chute was open when he came down, but he was moving fast and didn’t appear to be flaring (which further slows descent to a manageable landing speed). He might have become incapacitated in the air, or still impacted hard enough to kill him, but it wasn’t a “no chute full speed” type of situation, it seems

Tasmota with OpenHab or similar

Greetings, internet strangers. I just got a Martin Jerry Tasmota smart switch and would like to connect it to OpenHab or something similar. I have ruled out HomeAssistant because their docker image doesn’t have plugin support and I need to run it on an existing Debian 12 server. I know a little bit about mqtt but not much. If...

4am,

Run a supervised install of HomeAssistant, which does support plugins?

When do you think there will be an Android app that could accurately perform real time object recognition?

In Star Wars Rebels, there was an E-XD-series infiltrator droid that could quickly take inventory of everything in a Rebel warehouse. With the advanced object recognition capabilities of modern AI, it’s only a matter of time before an app for Android can accurately and rapidly identify and store objects in real-time from video...

4am, (edited )

Frigate does this on a raspberry pi or Intel NUC already. Would be power hungry in a phone but if you are not training ML models and just looking for objects they already know, the tech would be ready today.

EDIT: Here’s Google’s article on how to create your own TensorFlow app for Android developers.google.com/ml-kit/vision/…/android

Current PC is too bad for Cities Skylines 2. Can anyone judge the PCPartPicker list I've put together?

This is based off the “Great tier” AMD build, but I’m waffling a bit on the price. I don’t really know a whole lot about PC specs, but I read this is supposed to be a good long-lasting build based on the DDR5 and something newer in the CPU or Video card. That being said, I’ve only really ever build mid-tier and while I...

4am,

Is Intel still on top? I thought AMD had swept away multi core since Zen 2 and recently has beat equivalent Intel CPUs in single-core as well?

4am,

Look into MoCa adapters. (Media Over Cable)

These let you do the same thing as powerline, but with the Coaxial cable TV ports in your walls instead.

If you really want to get fancy, pull out your old phone jacks and follow them through with CAT6 ( and new phone wire if you want to keep both). You don’t need to wire everything; buy some WiFi APs and keep the router in the basement, and run hardlines to your APs (an AP or Access Point is just the WiFi part of what you think of as the router, it doesn’t do any routing, it just goes from wired->wireless)

4am,

Why the downvote for Guacamole? Is it because it’s not practical to OPs question? Did something happen with the project? I’m not up to speed, but have been mulling over using it for my setup for a while now.

4am,

Probably using a poorly coded 3rd party app. There are so many phone apps now any many are still in the early stages of development. I saw another user saying “Blocking a bot account crashes my app” but I fail to see how that’s Lemmy’s fault

4am,

The ones that post 60 articles about every sports team from some aggregate of RSS feeds and run on a timer every 30 mins and clog up the feed are annoying as well

4am,

Patients who are cured go on to live a longer more productive life and spend more in other sectors (including checkups and visits for later issues). So yeah, heartless dumbasses, it’s good.

Harvard was a fucking mistake.

4am,

Wow, they basically made a hybrid DKC/voxel system. Pretty slick. Something that couldn’t have been tried back in the day due to sprite limits.

4am,

God dammit, those aren’t IT cables, they’re TV cables. The AV guys did it!

4am,

“Gleeful Audacity” is the best way I’ve heard to describe the “Harley Quinninfication” of game characters.

Can we stop with the ultra polished sexy ringleader clown steampunk eyeliner girls? It’s tired AF.

What was Elon Musk’s strategy for Twitter? A fired Trump White House staffer offers a tantalizing clue (www.nbcnews.com)

The text messages described a series of actions Musk should take after he gained full control of the social media platform: “Step 1: Blame the platform for its users; Step 2: Coordinated pressure campaign; Step 3: Exodus of the Bluechecks; Step 4: Deplatforming.”

4am,

I’ve been saying this for a while and have been called a conspiracy nut; or at minimum that it’s “unrealistic”.

Well. Sweet vindication.

Occam’s razor would dictate that I would not chance it.

4am,

True. This could be the first and only day of your life so far!
