So what do you like to do for fun? Or, What are some of your hobbies?

I find these much better than “so what do you do for work?”, which is what I’m asked constantly. “Yes, person who I don’t know, let me discuss work during my free time with you.”

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I mean what Discords do you participate in? What Lemmy communities do you follow? What videos on YouTube do you like to watch?

You can reframe this and say, “I like to participate in online chat forums about the latest gaming news and technology (discord). I look for cool recipes and cooking techniques (Lemmy cooking community). And I love trying to find new funny comedians to listen to (YouTube).” I think if you narrow it down to the interests you enjoy, rather than “dicking around online” you’ll find that you have interesting things to talk about.

Obviously those examples are my own, but I’m sure you use those platforms because they feed you certain content that you enjoy.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I have friends that claim they “don’t have hobbies” but the truth is that they spend all their time with their kids and working.

So if they say, “well I don’t do much in the way of hobbies because I’m too busy working and taking care of my kids.” You can then follow up with “well what do you do for work?” Or “what’s the last vacation or outing you did with your kids?” Or “what are your kids interested in? How old are they? Tell me about their personalities.”

The fact that they “don’t have hobbies” isn’t necessarily it backfiring, you then just need to pivot based on their answers. This is just a way to break the ice with someone.

Everyone spends their days doing things, you are really just asking them “how do you spend your time?” Everyone has an answer to that…unless they are in a coma.

🍿🛋️ Ok, let’s hear them.

Has anyone here ordered Daybreak (the new game from the person who made Pandemic)? My copy is coming in the mail today, and I can't wait to try it out.

I used to love playing Pandemic, but now that we actually lived through one, none of my friends want to play it anymore, myself included. I’m really looking forward to Daybreak to hopefully reattain the vibes of the original while still being fresh....

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that’s true, but I feel the message will be more hopeful for some reason. One is simulating the situation we are in and how we get out (climate change), the other is simulating going back into another pandemic after already having gone through a real one. It’s a subtle difference.

I think we are all interested in solving climate change, but personally feel inept as the problems are bigger than an individual can manage. Like, my personal recycling is not going to save the planet. It’s going to take large geopolitical and technological changes. A game where I can simulate being in the position to make those large impactful changes sounds really cool and empowering, and hopeful. And the cooperative aspect of it brings in the community aspect of us all working together to solve a global problem.

I also think this can be a really great way to simplify the complexity of the issue to kids in a fun way, while giving them ideas on how it can be solved, and ultimately teach them that this issue is solvable…because it must be solved.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for your perspective! I totally get it. I imagine at the end of the game you all go “we solved climate change! Hurray!”, and then get back to reality where, “well no we are still living in hell” lol.

In the end though, I hope that the overall message is “we can do this if we do it together”, and my generation and the next have to be the ones to solve it.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

In terms of the game, each player represents a world power, but there are no specific countries in the game. It’s not played on a world map.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t take it as raining on my parade, so you’re all good there buddy.

And as for the topic of board gaming being sustainable or unsustainable in and of themselves, the creator actually touches on this in his backerkit page. I think it’s an interesting thing to talk about.

www.backerkit.com/c/projects/alex-hague/daybreak#…

There are no plastics in the game and they are doing their best to lessen or reduce the climate impact of making and distributing the game. Might be worth a look if you are interested to see their approach.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Totally understandable! There’s always TTS too to try it out. I’m sure it’ll be added if it hasn’t already.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I was planning to play it with my family over the holiday but unfortunately I’m sick and have to lock down. I’ll probably get a chance over Christmas unless I can convince my wife to play it with me just the two of us. I was hoping to have my first time be with a full group.

I didn’t back the kickstarter as I’ve been burned with Kickstarter before (anyone remember the coolest cooler?). I just happened to find out about it right before launch and bought it.

I think some board game channels like No Rolls Barred and others will probably post gameplay soon.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, well I’m the lead mod of !playstation and also a !nintendo mod so when I see crossover content with other communities I try and cross post. I also have a 3 year old so bluey is on my radar!

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

It’s available for Switch, Xbox, Steam, and PS. So if you have one of those you’re good!

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

😶

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

From the creator of Pandemic also. Really excited for this one.

Before 2020 I loved playing pandemic but when the actual pandemic hit my friend group became disinterested. I’m really liking the hopeful outlook of this one and I think it’ll scratch that pandemic itch. Preordered it to hopefully play it this holiday.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I was thinking about this the other day. It would be really interesting if in this board game one player played as the “villain”. Someone who is trying to expand the use of cars and fossil fuels and unsustainable practices while the other players are joined against them. I think this would be a really cool expansion

If you don’t call you’ll continue to grow distant. Be the change you want to see. Reconnect. Life is too short.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I’m really happy for you both!

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, I get your point, but tracking it and going out with my telescope to see it fly by outside as a kid was such a foundational moment for me. It’ll be sad to know its gone without a replacement in the meantime

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,

I wonder how much more fuel you need to use and what other challenges you face when launching so far from the equator.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Is it really half the game? That’s crazy

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,

Oddly enough those with the sickle cell trait (one abnormal gene and one regular gene) actually have protection against malaria. Those with sickle cell anemia (2 abnormal genes) unfortunately, do not.

What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

What I mean is… sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons...

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t played the beta yet but I’m hoping that The Finals, which is made by ex-Dice devs, will be a good alternative to Battlefield and COD. I just miss destructible environments so badly. Bad Company 2 was so so good back in the day.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Nice! Two new communities for me! Thanks!

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I’m excited but I’m waiting for reviews first. I have a steam deck so I’m really just looking for some screen comparisons. I miss the haptics when remote playing the PS5 on the deck

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I agree completely but just so you know, it’s a positive feedback loop even if the outcome is negative.

A positive feedback loop is one where the input creates an output that then increases the input further, which in turn further increases the output.

A negative feedback loop is one where the input creates an output that then lessens the input, which in turn decreases the output.

Shrinking middle class begets ignorance. Political forces capitalize on ignorance to misinform and manipulate the masses to elect people and enact policies that are not in their best interest. Doing so further erodes the middle class and decreases education, begetting further ignorance, misinformation, and political extremism. Positive feedback loop.

(Sorry if this was pedantic but it reminded me of a very specific learning moment I had with an old science teacher of mine about this exact distinction)

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

yeah, there’s nothing to argue here. These are scientific definitions of the two terms. A positive feedback loop can be negative in terms of consequences, but it doesn’t change the fact that the loop is defined as a positive feedback loop.

The words “positive” or “negative” in terms of the loop definition do not refer to “good” or “bad”, but rather the mathematical definitions of “additive/multiplicative” or “subtractive/divisive”. A positive feedback loop is an additive or multiplicative function whereby inputs increase outputs which increase inputs which increase outputs.

A classic example is a snowball rolling down a hill that grows in size and gains speed. Whether or not the snowball grows big enough and rolls fast enough to annihilate the school at the bottom of the hill, it doesn’t change the fact that by definition the feedback loop that is generating a larger and larger and faster and faster snowball is defined as positive.

An example of a negative feedback loop could be you getting sick. The input being viral or bacterial particles enter your body, the output is your body temperature increases, which kills the pathogens thereby decreasing the input. The decrease in pathogens then signals to your body that the infection is receding, and you body temperature returns to normal (decreased output). You healing from a sickness is a positive (good) thing, but the feedback loop that did it, is a negative one.

We already experience this on earth to a degree. The moon causes the tides and shore dwelling ocean creatures have to contend with surviving during the high and low tidal periods. Not really weather per se, but it’s something.

No Kit Kat? I guess a 100 Grand then

Is it on steam? I just started using TTS recently

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

God of War Ragnarok about 6 hours in. And just started Returnal to play as my multiplayer game with a buddy online. Got to the first boss just myself and almost beat it. Love the vibe overall. I’ll also probably start Spiderman 2 this week

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Hi! I’m the lead mod over on !playstation

I don’t have any issues with users posting lfg posts so long as personal identifying information is not publicly shared. Gamertag and screen names publicly shouldn’t be an issue I don’t think.

Of course, if you are looking for mainly PC gaming or a different console then this won’t help you much. We have a weekly, “what are you playing” pinned thread. Could be good to hop in there and see what others are playing and strike up a conversation and see if others are willing to team up.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, for sure! You should start one!

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

You can try and find an old steam controller maybe? I have one when they went on sale for dirt cheap before they discontinued manufacturing. The trackpads do have feedback like the deck but not not as good (it was the precursor after all)

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Nice! The low abxy is tricky. Personally I don’t use mine much, but it’s such a unique design that when they were discontinuing it I had to pick one up.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,

On mobile Firefox I use the Web Archives extension to auto open the current webpage in archive.is.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,

Hopefully after developing the switch 2 chip we see them work on updating their Shield line of Android TV boxes.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

It’s either dead or there’s no need to update it because there isn’t real competition in that space. I’m just wondering what they are going to do with this new mobile chip platform once the switch 2 is released. I doubt they only ever use it in the switch 2. I’m guessing they would want to release it (or a version of it) in some other hardware.

Kiri-ai: The Duel - Two players, five minutes, 16 cards, one of the most compelling card games I’ve ever played (www.dicebreaker.com)

I just read this article and went ahead and preordered this game. It seems like such a fun time. I have a particular friend in mind that I think would love to play this with me. Figured I would share with this community.

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

That’s great! Mine hasn’t come in yet though :(

I thought about grabbing a couple for friends too but figured I would wait to play it first. So glad you’re having fun!

Edit: I just checked my order status and it’s “in warehouse” so hopefully I’ll get it soon
