Yeah, I think this is a big part of it. The Star Trek sub’s total abandonment of Reddit and conversion to a standalone Lemmy instance during the Blackout was a big deal and a big driver of traffic in those days and beyond.
Star Trek is big in the Threadiverse for the same reason that Earth is big in the Federation. They were a massive force in the early days.
Kind of a trend, the amount of youtubers who i had loved but their content became generic after gaining popularity is quite a bit, most drastic one being mrwhosetheboss, his uniqueness went down faster than MH27 MH17
Illuminaughtii was getting pushed into my feed so hard right before everything went down that I’ve started to cast side-eye on anyone that the algorithm starts to push hard.
On the plus side, I found Cruel World Happy Mind because of all the awful stuff Illuminaughtii did to her.
I use the MTV demarcation line. If you were born before MTV came on the air (1982) then you’re GenX. But the whole Xenial thing is also legit.
PS the hidden secret to knowing anything before the internet was librarians. If it was really obscure the NY public library would take calls from all over the country.
UDP seems more like a ball fired from canon to me. You may not be prepared for it and you won’t know what state it’s in when it gets here, but that packet is making it to the gate no matter what. Or, in the rare case it doesn’t, it means someone else is having a real bad time.
The first 2 seasons of Travellers were really good. The 3rd was fine. They had to wrap up the story after getting cancelled and, as usual with that sort of thing, it felt a bit strained and rushed.
This might be a limitation of Lemmy or voyager, but is there some option for me to “watch” or “subscribe” to a post and be notified of new comments?...
I recently learned that the first song that Bowie wrote after learning piano was “Oh You Pretty Things.” I don’t know why but I’ve been listening to it a ton since. And I’m currently counting Hunky Dory as my favorite Bowie album.
Disney’s Cinderella was re-released in theaters in 80s, I’m pretty sure that’s the first one that formed a permanent memory. I’m not sure I’ve seen it from start to finish since then.
I’ll always miss the scouring of The Shire. I know the movie didn’t need more endings, but it is a big part of Frodo’s end and it’s the big payoff for Merry and Pippin
I’m not worried about my code, I’m (very slightly) worried about all the date libraries I used because I didn’t want code that shit again for the billionth time.
Yeah, I’m generally using the common data/time libraries in most (if not all) languages and I’m pretty sure they’ve all been through more than 1 leap year at this point. I just never 100% trust the code I don’t control - 99.9% maybe, but never 100.
I have a business idea. I’m guessing it would take a quarter billion dollars and 3 - 5 years in strict stealth to get it off the ground, without getting sniped by a massive entity like Amazon (provided there’s real value in the idea). And if it were successful (and didn’t alienate its potential customers) it would still have razor thin margins that would probably mean finding investment really tough.
Its never going to happen and I still don’t want to talk about details, just in case.
Most of the NDAs I’ve signed were from Amazon. I was regularly recruited by the AWS UX team to test changes to their web console in exchange for gift cards. But it meant for a while that I was legally prohibited from telling people inane shit like, “they might add a ‘cluster’ column to the RDS database list.” Stop the presses!
I’m curious as to what qualifies as AskLemmy content? Given that the community guidelines/rules basically boil down to “don’t come here looking for Lemmy tech support” and “obey Wheaton’s Law.”
A countertop water boiler. It turns out I go through just about 4L of tea a day and now I spend a lot less time boiling water. And when you refill it and it comes to temperature it plays Fur Elise
I rocked a Samsung Alias 2 for 4 years before I got an iPhone 5. The e-ink keyboard was awesome how it changed when you flipped the screen open to portrait or landscape.
The nearest dispensary is about a block away. Three blocks to the right is another dispensary, and if you mess up and turn left instead, there’s a different one about 6 blocks that direction.
When the state legalized the neighbor city added a tax on all cannabis products. So 80% of the dispensaries opened in this city. Now those dispensaries are in a price war with each other. The number of places with giant signs out front about $30 ounces makes me think that a market correction is on the way.
I used to joke that in our downtown every block had either a dispensary, a head shop, or a vape shop. Then I found a block with all 3 and it seemed less funny.
Would love to know what you guys think and your reasoning for it. I’m starting to see a lot of Apple Watches/Fitbits/Galaxy Watches in my area compared to more traditional timepieces.
I enjoyed having a smartwatch back in the pebble days. I was kind of addicted to notifications (especially from datadog) at the time. My Pebble time made me feel less stressed because glancing at my watch was less effort than pulling out my phone.
Then Pebble was killed off, web-scale infrastructure became more reliable, and I learned to recover from my notification addiction. Now I’m happily watchless again.
I’ve been really enjoying the Red Hot Organization’s “No Alternative” and “Dark was the Night” recently, both because they raised a lot of money for AIDS research and because they do a great job of capturing the 90s alternative sound and 00s indie sound respectively, and it’s got me thinking how much I love...
The non-soundtrack compilation that first comes to mind is The Duran Duran Tribute Album. It’s all covers of Duran Duran songs and, because it was released in the late 90s, there’s more than its fair share of ska.
There are a lot of great tracks. My highlights are Goldfinger’s version of Rio and The Wesley Willis Fiasco’s cover of Girls on Film.
This album made me realize that Duran Duran was about 20bpm away from being one of my favorite bands.
I was going through some js code a few months ago and every function in a module had return; as its first line. And that module was imported into 4 or 5 scripts.
For me, it’s jingle all the way. It’s got everything. A drunk reindeer. A terrorist mailman. Arnold punching a deer. Arnold punching Sinbad. Arnold punching Santa. Arnold in general....
Honestly it’s one of the few Christmas movies I still really look forward to watching. Not only have I always loved the muppets, but it’s just a really good movie. Micheal Caine is gives it 100% and the story adaptation is really well done. And having Gonzo narrating as Dickens plus Rizzo for breaking tension was pulled off so well.
Dear Lemmy, **why** Star Trek??
Every single large server in this federation has at least one Star Trek community. There is even an entire server dedicated to Star Trek....
